Title: ACW help needed
Post by: Womble67 on 07 February 2012, 10:53:59 AM
Hi all, I am hoping a more experienced member may be able to help me.  Am in the process of basing my ACW armies, and I'm pretty much happy with the colour schemes I have chosen for the infantry and cavalry.  However, I am confused over the colours used for wagons.  I know artillery limbers and caissons are dark Green but would the ammunition wagons also be dark green, or blue with red wheels.

Hi Womble67
I would work under the theory that Regimental level they may have painted Wagons but owing to the numbers needed for supply they would probably be unpainted wood as it would cost a fortune to paint every supply wagon in a Division,or Corps so you could paint a couple and have some plain wood which you could also then use for your wagon train across the prairies! hope this helps

Hi mart678 thanks for the quick reply, and I think you're right, I will just paint a few, and the rest I'll do as wood.

As far as I'm aware the Confederate artillery woodwork was supposed to be blue/grey, but I imagine there would have been a fair bit of captured Union green artillery equipment. I think supply wagons, forges, limbers etc. followed the same colour schemes. This info comes from Paul Stevenson's excellent little book on wargaming the ACW.
