After the resounding success of last years debut competition, the 2012 event was virtually guaranteed! This year it's even bigger and better, with more categories, more prizes, and hopefully more entries!
This year, thanks to the leap year, the competition will be running for 4 weeks and 1 day, starting on Feb 1st, and running through to Feb 29th.
And this time around there will be 7 categories! We've split the Foot category, to separate those rather colourful 18th C. types from the endless green/brown/greyness of the 20th C. Also, we've created a separate category for all of the Fantasy & Sci-Fi entries. And finally, we've added an extra Open category, to allow entries of any size, from a small snapshot of your army, right through to the whole table if you fancy!
Categories:
Foot - Pre-20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures on a single base, and pre-1900.
Foot - 20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures on a single base.
Mounted - Min: 3 / Max: 8 figures on a single base.
Vehicle - Single vehicle on or off base.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Anything Fantasy or Sci-Fi oriented, maximum base size of 60x60mm.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 60x60mm.
Open - Anything Goes! - Anything at all you'd like to put in, diorama's, armies, whole tables, anything!
If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!
Rules
- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.
- You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome!
- You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed a single image (except for the 'Anything Goes' category, see below). You can combine several shots into a montage if you wish, but still only one overall image. If you have any difficulty posting pics, they can be emailed to Pendraken and we'll put them up for you. We'll also be linking some good photo tutorials closer to the start date.
- The 'Open - Anything Goes' category may have 3 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo! You can also still put several images together into a montage if you would prefer that.
- All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.
- You can post WIP photo's if you wish, and you can also post extra photo's of your work elsewhere on the Forum. These will not count towards your competition entry.
- The winners will be decided by a team of judges (to be announced very soon!). Entries will be judged on the painting first and foremost, but remember that effective basing can make a nice entry look even better.
- Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.
This year we've got a massive £360 worth of prizes lined up, and we'll be announcing those in the next week, so keep an eye out for that! Remember, the opening day for entries is 1st Feb, which gives you just enough time to get any figures ordered, grab your brushes and get busy! We've seen some great work displayed on the Forum over the past 12 months, so we're hoping to see some of it making an appearance in the Competition!
If there's any questions, let us know!
I'm in!!
"Entries will be judged on the painting first and foremost, but remember that effective basing can make a nice entry look even better."
As does being able to take a photo in a professional backlit white booth like a lot of last years winners :'( :'(... :(
It'll be nice to know how we can even that playing field out for this year's event.
Cheers
I will definately be entering more of my 'averageness' this year because it was great fun last year.
I find myself a little bit dasappointed that there isnt a specific 'army' category as I have spent the last twelve months paiting armies rather than concentrating on vignettes.
'Anything goes' is too broad a spectrum - no doubt the category will be won by some magnificent oversized vignette which looks spectacular but has limited use in terms of playing a wargame. I will still enter an army in the category
The two Corps of Prussian troops I used last night, my French or my AWI will all have to be in the army section, as they all have more figures per base than the catagories permit! :'( Maybe some Jagers or Chasseurs a Pied might qualify... ;)
Ho hum.
At least my halflings are suitablefor fantasy! :D
can't wait for it! :D
I have a questioin, the kick off is 1 Feb, but wich is the deadline?
29th February.
Placing order today!

It was tricky finding something which would allow Dungeon entries as well, so this was the best all round solution. I'd expect to see a lot of armies featured in it hopefully. I've also just amended the rules to allow up to 3 photo's per entry in this category, just the 1 would be too restrictive. You can still combine a load of pics into a single image though, as with the other categories.

I did increase the cavalry maximum slightly as I knew you'd just done those ones the other day, but only up to 8 unfortunately. Would they fit into the 'Open - Single Base' category though?
Thanks Leon, i shall do my best to fit in! ;)
As cavalry have gone up to 8 per base, it might be reasonable to allow up to 15-20 infantry on a base. Its possible to get 12 on a Warmaster base without trying so 10 is a little low.
It will be interesting to see what entries are in open - glad you mentioned dungeons, as I might not thought of it, and it will give me a reason to get some more critters painted.
Photo wise, it's quite easy to create a light booth, which gives you good even light, and gives the clean white background effect. There are lots of tutorials online. In the past for 10mm figures I've created a photo booth from a white hanky and some paint pots, with a normal desk light.
One question: I'm planning to paint some Pendraken Orcs individually based on 1 cent coins. In which category would they fit?
Ps. (I suppose my Wolfestein project cannot be included in this comp, can it? :P)

The Orcs would go into the 'Fantasy & Sci-Fi' category, either individually, or you could place them into a small movement tray and photo them as a unit? Or you could put them all on your gaming table, and enter a large group of them in the 'Open - Anything Goes!' category! Or both even!
Wolfenstein could be included if you want, again in the 'Open - Anything Goes!' category, as it hasn't been entered in any other online competitions has it?

I have a quick question:

Can it count as both?

If I remember right from last year, artillery went into the 'Open - Single Base' category.
Ooh interesting.
I might enter this year...
Count me in. I have new French Naps and Viking waiting to be painted.

Here are some pictures of my foamboard photobooth, it has only one lamp at the top, but the reflection inside makes for almost no shadows at all, even with the one lightsource.

Just started painting for this years competition :)
Can´t wait to see all the other beautifully painted miniatures.
Mine have arrived, will not be starting until I finish the 15mm army I am using on 10 & 11 Feb is finished!
It's all going to be tight!
:D
Just over a week to go before entry opens, I hope everyone's busily slapping paint on things!
:D
Hi Guys and Gals,
Just a quick line to say good luck to you all, I am really looking forward to judging again this year. Going by the standard of the entries from last year I can't wait to see what this year brings.
So all the best
Andy :D
A have a question:
My fantasy units are base in 80x40mm bases. There are no legal? :(
Leon
Just received my e-mail advising of the above.

hmm I'm not very good at painting, however, I am willing to give it a go and see what happens you never know

Excellent, the more the merrier! If nothing else, it's handy motivation to get some painting done.
Hah !...
Well, I haven't painted anything for well over two years...and if I'm going to have a go I think everyone should....
Might have to use a 'wax five' instead of a paintbrush tho'.
Cheers - Phil. (Which bit of the brush is best to use ?...The pointy end or the fluffy end ?...I've forgotten.)
Use a roller Phil then you don't have to worry. ;)
Chad
Sounds good to me Chad ! ;D
What size roller to you recommend for fine detail ? ;)
Cheers - Phil
we should have a "painted with a roller" category. I defy AndyMac to do eyeballs with that!
Tell you what...
This painting lark is a lot harder than I remember ! :o......Doesn't help when most of the paints are getting a tad on the 'thick' side too. :'(
(And I wish someone had given me a hint about spraying such small figures.....Kiera went flying when I pressed the wossname on top of the can !) ;D
Cheers - Phil.

Ignoring all the obvious answers....
Double sided tape and painting sticks are very useful.
Water works wonders on paint - fairly thin is generally good for small figures.
If all else fails go for a roller ;)

I was being very lazy Fred...I just stuck her onto the top of a wine cork..(Not the most stable of items to use perhaps)..rather than a stick/spatula....Which would have been
far more sensible. #-o
With luck I might just be able to save
some of the old paints with water.....I'll give it a whirl.....Otherwise I'll find some old emulsion and use that roller. ;)

The easiest way is to host the pictures somewhere else (like Flickr/Photobucket/etc.), and then link them from here. If you need any help with that, let me know.
You can also post them directly, using the 'Additional Options' when you are typing your post, but these attachments are limited to only 128kb per pic.

WIP threads are great, it's always good to see the entries progress, and you can start those threads in the Painting Comp board: http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/board,61.0.html (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/board,61.0.html)

Actually the thing is pretty painful and right now I look like a bloody pirate with my eye patched, but according to the doctor it's going to be just a couple of days if things don't get complicated (crossing fingers). So I hope I'll publish my entry in a week or so, quite before the end of the comp.

You can only pose 1 picture per entry. However, you can combine several images into one picture, in a montage, like these ones from last year:

Yep, it all depends on the base sizes. If it's 60x60mm or smaller, it can go in the 'Single Base', if it's bigger then it has to go in the 'Anything Goes!'.

OK, thank you!
Hello again :D
An infantry command stand would go in the foot or in the open single base category?
Again, it would depend on the base size and how many figures:
Foot - Pre-20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures on a single base, and pre-1900.
Foot - 20th C. - Min: 3 / Max: 10 figures on a single base.
These both require at least 3 figures on the base.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 60x60mm.
If it was only 2 figures, then they would go in this category.
Now, if your entry fits the guidelines for both category's, then it is up to you which one you put it in. Maybe the one where you will have a better chance of a prize? :D
Blacksmith, have a look at last year's open category entries. IIRC the entry rules were pretty much the same. I entered an armoured ambulance with casualty and medic ad one entry and a artillery piece as another.

Um Leon, I know that only 2 people from each category will get a prize, but after the competition is over are the judges allowed to let us know how many points each of our entries received (only for those that want to know, of course)? That way, everyone who participated would get a little bit of feed back on how they did. Maybe it could be sent through a PM.
Please? ;) :D

Anyone who receives at least a point from the Judges, but doesn't win a prize, will go into the People's Choice Award, where all of the board members get to vote on who their favourite is. So if you don't get a main prize, and aren't in the People's Choice, then unfortunately you didn't receive any points. :(
The downside of so many entries is that a lot of people won't get any points, but we hope that everyone enjoys taking part, maybe gets a few tips/ideas for the future, and makes a little progress on their own personal lead mountain.

The downside of so many entries is that a lot of people won't get any points, but we hope that everyone enjoys taking part, maybe gets a few tips/ideas for the future, and makes a little progress on their own personal lead mountain.

If we do get in to the People's Choice award and don't win, can you still tell us how many points we received.

Hi Leon
IF....The opportunity arises.....Like we actually see the sun in the Preselis before the end of the comp....Are we allowed to delete a pic and replace it with a hopefully better one ?
Cheers - Phil.

Yeah, that's no bother. You can either make a new post with a better picture, or email me the link for a new image, and I'll edit it into the current entry.

144 entries now, with 6 days left to go!
:!! :D
Only 3 days left folks, don't leave it too late!
Also a quick note, I've gone through and edited some of the entries, sizes on some, and others changed from attachments to hosting, so just in case anyone was wondering why their entry showed an 'edited' note!

EEK :-SS :-SS :-SS
Less than a dozen entries in both the 20th C. Foot and the Vehicle category's, could be better odds of winning a prize in those two... :-\
Oy Leon, I've been banking on my chances in the vehicle class with the lack of numbers. I can't paint anything else at the moment as my Conservatory which is my painting room is currently being redone with a new roof and my paints etc are all packed up. They should have been done on Friday, but they weren't. >:(
Well over 200 entries now! :o
Only 2 days left though, so not long left to get those final entries in!

Thanks for the entries, looking good! I've had to move the Mounted Command to the Anything Goes category, as there were several bases in the shot. Let me know if you'd like me to crop the image and move it back to the Mounted category.
Well this is it folks, the last day of the competition! Entry closes at midnight tonight, so make sure you've got those last minute entries posted up!
:!! :-bd
managed to get some in, still a number to get photographed but have lost the will to live tonight so hopefully will ahve the time and inclination to get the goblin warband photographed tomorrow :D

A huge thank you to everyone who has entered, and good luck to everyone. There's been some fantastic work on show, in every category, and I hope everyone has enjoyed taking part.
The Judges will now be locked away in a room while they make their decisions! The official Winners Announcement will be made in 6 days time, at 6pm on Tuesday 6th March! Make sure you're online!

666?
Yeah... I noticed that myself as well when I made the post. It was originally going to be 6pm on Wednesday 7th instead, but something made me change my mind... :-\ :d
Weird...
I like to think of myself as a fairly rational person....But I get all (very) superstitious if I see 665 (the number of the typo) plonked down anywhere. X_X
As Iron Maiden sang.
"Nine, Nine, Nine....The number of the Police " (Or something like that )
Cheers - Phil.
