Ok, I know the ten Co's... one Grenadier and one Light... but how the average of you translate that into 10mm minis?... base 2? (twenty figures)... base 4? (forty figures)... or?... and last but not least which rules are preferred nowadays?

I think that usually the grenadier and light companies were taken away from the rest of the unit and formed into separate grenadier and light battalions. So the grenadiers of say 10 regiments would combined together to form a grenadier battalion. This is certainly what we did with our figures. In the rules we use you don't represent separate companies. A battalion is 3 to 10 bases of figures, different sizes to reflect campaign loses, etc. The number of figures per base doesn't matter but we use 4.
There are lots of good rules around and I don't think one particular set is preferred generally. The set we use are here, http://www.wfgamers.org.uk/resources/callan/lfas.htm, but there are plenty of others around.

Exellent set of rules, depends ofc on what your looking for but these are for roughly 5 foot x 3 foot (dining room) tables, plenty of info on how to base/what it represents, etc. These are what I'm using for my AWI games. (if I ever get them all painted)
British Grenadier is an excellent set of rules for the conflict. There is a good support forum for it here http://generaldebrigade.13.forumer.com/viewforum.php?f=13 (http://generaldebrigade.13.forumer.com/viewforum.php?f=13) There are also 3 really good scenario books available which can be used with any set. You should be able to get them all from Caliver. hwiccee is right - you nearly always will be detaching your lights and grenadiers into combined battalions.
My British regiments vary between 16 and 32 figures based in 4s (assuming a 1:20 figure ratio) the bases don't precisely match companies but I don't worry about that too much - companies don't tend to get detached from the main battalions. If you search around on my blog link below you'll be able to see some examples.

I use a modified version of TFL's "They Couldn't Hit an Elephant" for AWI. I base 6 10mm figure on a 1"x1" stand. Each regiment is 3-6 stands and represent roughly 200 - 400 men. So the figure ratio is about 1:15.
