Contrary to popular belief it's not very difficult.
Firs you must carefully watch the photos. Every unit bears some signs, that allow to guess its nationality. I could say more - they were designed to allow an observer to determine the nationality of the unit, that was essential on the battlefield. 8)
1. The flag - some armies have characteristic design (e.g. 95% of French colours bear the white cross), another have heraldic symbols, such as coat of arms of souverains. Some of these symbols exist today and are easilly recognisable.
2. Officer's sash. In the age of differen colours of uniforms, colour of the sash was the sign which army our unit belongs to.
3. With nationality determined, one could refer to painting guides.

Googling the frase, eg. WSS "prussian army" also works sometimes.
4. Sometimes the type of unit may help.
Dragoons were easilly recognisable because their musicians differ from these of heavy cavalry.
Also, only very few armies had permanent units of grenadiers. So if one see the grenadiers with flag, it means that they could be on of only 5 or 6 regiments of the whole war ...
I hope, that with these hints, more people would challenge Grenadier ;)

I have seen some of Maciek's flags and they are some of the best I've seen in any scale, so this is an excellent prize.
