I based the show display ones on MDF.

- Drilled a small hole in the MDF, covered it in PVA and put the sand on.
- Left to dry for a minute or two, then popped a blob of superglue on the base of the tree trunk, and pushed it into the hole.  The superglue reacts with the water in the PVA and sets quicker, and the sand around the hole gives a tighter fit.
- Then I just brushed on some PVA/water mix and added some texture, and a few rocks.

They're not fantastic but they do they job:

For the larger trees, I used a couple of sheets of MDF stuck together, just to give them a deeper hole for strength.

I'm hoping to knock up some tree bases, in various irregular sizes, but that won't be 'til after Xmas.
