Title: Solo Playing
Post by: KOVAV on 02 October 2011, 10:21:37 PM
HY! anyway, I am currently fresh out of opponents and I still have allot of time on my hands before I get my first shipment of minis to focus on. I uasally use unbridled fury and WHFB, but I haveing a bit of difficulty playing those solo. am using dungeon world and SOGD for solo dungeoneering, but I crave battle  :d! I can set up a game with either of the rulesets I am used to useing, but I would like your input first. so, anyone have any tips on solo gaming in general, and a good ruleset of for doing it? thanks!

Warmaster (or any of its variants)

the unpredictability of the command system, will totally screw up any "cunning plans"

Ask Nik! He plays with himself all the time

Agree completely on the Warmaster, BKC front. Half my games are solo these days and the rules work perfectly, still giving a good game.

My website will be open to the public in a couple of days... it contains complete rules for setting up a dungeon and playing solo, if that helps?

Cheers for now,

Stevie.

thanks guys. I just met Nik. I shall always think of him differently now, I'm afraid. :-[ any way, I will check out warmaster, see if I can use google fu for finding solo gaming tips for it. oh, and ssd: if course that would help! I dont have any dungeon stuff (yet) but a little imagination with a good rule-set can do great things! of course it would help. I already downloaded the dungeon world rule-set and supplements from this site, will yours be any different?

I Think you might find that warmaster and the 2 volumes of kists are free from the GW web site.

There is a direct link from "freewargamesrules.co.uk" in the fantasy section.

DWC (Dungeon World Campaigns) contains the full, and final 3rd edition Dungeon World rules for dungeon crawl rpg gaming with miniatures - old school gaming in effect; though some might say that in fact, old school rpg was all about pen and paper gaming and not about figures at all... both points are valid ad I`ve written papers and articles covering this in the past.

DWC also contains a full set of mass table top battle rules which are based off of DW, but which are designed to be played at skirmish level (5/10/15 figures per side) all the way up to 200/300+ figures per side. They work on a one to one figure scale ratio (1 figure represents 1 man or beast) and pieces are based individually throughout.

Much of the filler originally intended for the book (short stories, campaign material, ad filler) will not make the book due to size issues, and anything Pendraken publish is likely to be the bare rules at this stage. However, this means I have been able to take a great deal of the material and put it up for free in the new website.

So yes, the mass battle rules will be ideal for company (one or two units) level games; but truthfully, I`m not sure when they`ll be available. Not too long I would think.

Cheers,

Six

It's true - about 99% of the time I'm playing with myself. With little men.

It's a wonder I can still see them quite frankly  ;) :P ;D

Seriously though, anything with variables that will affect your planning & execution will work best for solo - which is why I'm such a fan of WM & all its variants; as Ian says the original fantasy WM rules etc are free for download now - and there are plenty of free historical variants knocking around, although you won't beat BKC, CWC & FWC as commercial rules IMHO. Ditto WMA.

You might want to have a quick look at the Solo section of the BKC forum for some tips as well: http://www.blitzkrieg-commander.com/Content/Forum/Forum.aspx?CategoryID=12&ForumID=65

Apologies: you've got Blitzkrieg Commander [BKC] for 1936-45, Cold War Commander [CWC] for 1946+ & Future War Commander [FWC] for sci-fi - all from the same stable: Pete Jones at Specialist Military Publishing. They're all lovely - but I do have to declare an interest as I contributed both to playtesting [& painting models] for all three  :)

You might care to consider a set of event cards of the general "left wing halts for three moves" variety. Draw one on each move. Breaks up the smooth progression of the game and adds variety.  :-B

For ancient and medieval (with few adaptation) you can try Command&Colors sistem. Card driven game on hex map, but isn' t too difficult convert the sistem for play hexless. You pick an order card for a side and excute it, then pick another card for the other side.
For SF/Modern I like FUBAR. The activation roll for units and random choice for the following actions work well.... for me  ;)

Sounds great! few rules lete alone free ones can claim that kind of variaty, and I look forward to useing it  the day its avaible. good things are worth waiting for, and due to my cheap-ass shipping choices, I will be waiting a while anyhow. thanks for the advice all! Warmaster sounds cool, I think its what I will be useing for medieval fantasy until DW comes out in full colers.
