Title: Rediscovering old rules
Post by: Fenton on 25 September 2011, 10:49:41 AM
Having been playing Impetus for a while now, I was digging in one of my cupboards and found Vis Bellica, I havent played it for a few years, remembering it also used 60x30 bases or 120x60 for those that like extra bases using my Impetus stuf  was no problem ( Chariots and elephants are bases slightly differently ), Have to say I had forgoten what a great system it is..Great scouting and Command rules...really good  fun with some difficult decisions to be made when it came to changing orders...I think I may go back to playing this a lot more again in the future

Anyone else had similar experiences in rediscovering old rules again

I found these the other day - the first 'proper' wargames rules I played:

Ought to give 'em a run out again...

I found all my original AD&D books, campaign notes and character folders in the loft a few months ago.

After a few nostaggic miutes I put them away again, life is too short to get back into AD&D and I don't know any of my current gaming mates who're interested.

The trouble with revisiting old rules is that they seem so dated. Things move on, fashions change and so do tastes. As someone once remarked "nostalgia ain't what it used to be".  ;)

Ah the great old rules, I was lucky (???) enough to pick up a set of WRG 6th Edition ancients and all the lists at our bring and buy this month.

I tried to have a read of them, but gave up when the headache got too bad, I cant believe that we actually used to play these.

Give me Warmaster every time, suits my aged brain cells better.

I never liked 6th or 7th edition.

I'm going to have to dig out Newbury Fast Play and have a read through just for the hell of it now.

I liked all Trevors' Napoleonic editions  from Liecester Micro Models 1st. edition to Newbury Rules 4th. Edition.

Being a glutton for punishment I'm trying to put together something that sets the ground scale and figure ratio to the size of your table and the size of the battlefield.

After all, if you have a map of a battlefield then you put it on the table, scaled up with terrain and the same with a campaign though not as easy.

I keep getting distracted between the two.

I knew several people who could quote them verbatim. Put me off Ancients for thirty years.  >:(

Yes, and any misinterpetation seemed to be in their favor.

Or is that just me, only remembering the disagreements?

No. They seemed to breed that sort of rule-mechanic.  :(

Buried deep in a box stacked in the attic, I recently found my old Thane Tostig rules (1978) which bought back memories of my early Dark Ages campaigns played out using Barry Minot figures alongside Tony Baths "Solo Wargame Campaigns". Dated as heck, but nostalgically moor-ish.

I also dug out "Terrible Swift Sword" 1st edition (1980-ish?) at the same time... I just know that after pouring over the maps and rules for a while, it will all go back in the attic to gather more dust.

I still have 'Vive L'Empereur' by Ned Zuparko, which I think were the first to use iniative rolls. Always enjoyed playing them.

Also 'Frederick the Great' by FGU; bloody but fun. They also had WSS adjustments.

Probably have others somewhere and I come across them every now and again and wonder if I should give them a go.

I could never get anyone to play Ned's rules :-(
I've not seen Frederic the great by FGU

After a great deal of persuasion by my wife (sort it out or else).
I've found :
Lazerburn
Reaper (Rick Priestly)
Musketeer (Dave Millward) (Renaisance)
God's Acre (Dave Millward) (Medieval)

ACW (London Wargames section)
Napoleonic has disapeared
Battle! (Charles Grant) (WWII)
War Games I can't find. I think I loaned it to the club.

Mike

I had the same problem with some gamers with Vive L'Empereur. Some of my fellow gamers at the time never understood the concept that not moving on a failed iniiative roll was not actually 'no movement' but delayed movement. The idea was that not everyone necessarily moved at the same time or rate. This has now been replaced by variable movement.

Also found another set of Napoleonics, 'Battles for Empire'.

Not played Battles for Empire but it sounds familiar.
I Think Vive L'Empereur appeared like boardgame rules with IGUG, to UK gamers, that is.
After all we wer using 15mm figures to give more battlefield space, ie. 1/4 " front per figure (MiniFigs. Strip) and 1 figure = 50 men.
Trouble is we wanted rules like empire or similar complexity and the ability to make 10 moves per hour.

Mike. They were not IGUG and the basic scale was 100 to 1. If I recall initiative tests were done by unit so that some moved others were delayed. Chad
