Evening, chaps,
I've been gaming Great War Western and Eastern Front (1914 only), using Great War Spearhead, for about six years now (one-and-a half French Divisions, ditto for the BEF, a German infantry Corps and cavalry division and a Russian Corps, cavalry division and rifle brigade) and want to move to the strange world of the Isonzo... prinicipally to get two new armies, Italian and Austro-Hungarian, but also to experiment with gaming trench warfare.
I don't know which year(s) to do: would prefer 1915/6 to later (I think) but wonder what figures are best to use - I see there are no trench mortars for either side in the Pendraken range, and there are some other limitations. I suppose once the AH forces adopted the helmet (1916 onwards?) one just uses German minis, and I suppose once the Italians started using the Adrien helmet (1916 onwards?) one starts using French minis?
Some advice would be v welcome, if indeed there is anyone out there who has gamed the 'Italian Front' with Pendraken figs!
Cheers,
Mike H
The AH soldiers are all in soft cap but the steel helmeted Germans work just fine. The differences in field gear (while discernable to the knowledged) is still not enough to make the Germans a suitable substitute. I painted some up to represent them already.
Except for the Bersaglieri, the Italians are helmeted. The Arditti do have one early war pose with the experimental body armor and helmet.
Look through my Flickr and you will see the poses (some painted and some not). The pics are spread throughout so. I have some French in there too.

Intresting scope for a game Mike. I play VBCW and inter war era, so have had the same issue of having to equipt WW1type forces with mortars.
The 3" ML3 from Pendragon British WW2 range is passable as a Stokes 3" in 10mm scale - indeed it was based on the Stokes 3" - the Toffee apple 2 " is also usable as a 2"
In terms of crews, have a look at SCW International ranges - lots of French helmets. and clip and file to suit.
Last week I converted WW1 British in caps (MG crew gunner) to man mortars and the prone figure into an anti tank rifleman.
Vic (Grumpy old Man) is the expert on this forum in sourcing figures and kit.
Send us some images when you start rolling dice.
Sunray out.
