So what do you guys use? In the past I had some 4x3 boards similar to those used for exhibition stands but they got in the way ( wife's way)
Have now got 4 of the 2x2 green tiles but they take up loads of room, tempted to just get some green material and lay it on the dining table..... :-[
When we moved to our current house, I blagged a dedicated games room: it's actually a 20 foot x 20 foot double garage that will never see a car in it - ever ;D
This means that I've got plenty of storage for figures, terrain, books, paints etc etc etc - all in a carpeted room with power, lights, heating & my big feck-off stereo [not to mention my guitars 8)] - it's my man-cave...
It also means that I've got a permanent table set up: which is actually an old noticeboard from work that was about to be skipped: solid wood surround & back - with a GW static grass mat glued to it: it measures 5.5 foot x 4 foot - I've got a variety of mats to chuck over it for different theatres. I've also got an end table to put game-aids etc on while I play, which means less clutter on-table.
Next thing in there will be a fridge for the beer - and then I'll never have to go in the house again :D
We're rather blessed at Durham Wargames Group having numerous tables that cover roughly 6x56' of space (plus a 'boardgame table and a library).
We have a mix of surfaces including 100's of 2x2' textured wooden tiles, and a variety of 6x4' textured 'mats' (see here for how we make them http://www.durhamwargames.co.uk/terrain/battlemat/index.asp (http://www.durhamwargames.co.uk/terrain/battlemat/index.asp))
We also have a mass of terrain for all manner of scales and periods...although there never seems to be precisely what you're after for the current battle!!!
:-[ ;)
i have a spare room in my house i have got a 9ft x 4ft game board just busy doing some terrain at the moment.
I only have the use of my dining table, which is around 30 by 50 inches. Here is a picture of some of my home made terrain set up for you all to see.

Until we rebuild the conservatory (not likely in the short term) I use the dining room table with 2 6' x 2' boards with a green GW terrain mat.
Regards
Edward
I have a 3x6 desk that is usually a painting table. Across it I place 3 4x6 sheets of MDF for games night.

did you go on to mechwarrior or just stay with battle tech?
I've just gotten into MechWarrior, a late adopter since it is now out of print, but hey that's life huh.
Tempted to get one of the GW battle mats for the dining table, seen a few good reviews and sounds like it will last....
Teak painted board, sitting on my spare double bed.....works for me....and plenty of sweets..
I have a pasting table, I moved the hinges to the long side and covered it with grass flocked paper - a great size for 10mm games
I dont have one...we have enough clubs round here I can get one most days of the week
This summer I converted my garage to a games room. My table is based on some cheap B&Q kitchen units with MDF screwed on top. I've put some brackets on the walls which give me the option to extend my 6x4 table to 8x4 or 8x6

We use the GW battlemat. Have to say though, the newer ones are NOT the same quality...still good...just not as good. ;)

Old green flocked train mat on two 6' x 2' boards on the dining table (on blankets).
I keep thinking about getting a moss green faux fur throw to put over items for hills etc.

Edward
One or two 3ft x 4ft boards on the dining table with a mat on top. Tried the garage route but damn near froze to death in winter - too expensive to heat.
My table is a 4' x 8' sheet of chipboard on top of six Homebase free-standing garage shelf units. The units had to be screwed together, and I acquired a few blisters in the process, but now it's set up it's a rock-steady table with storage underneath.
4x6 recycled plywood on sawhorse legs in the garage. Not the most convenient size but effectively free.

A great idea will ahve to do something similar when I get the space :-bd
I have 4 4'x2' boards that I lay over a table and support with trestles. I can vary the size to be 4'x4' or 6'x4' or for one memorable game 2'x16'. (That got a bit rickety.)
Until I get moved into a new bigger house (this next year hopefully) I have to make do with whatever space is available at the time.
Usually the dining table with a series of various terrain boards in different sizes (up to about 4 x 5) I have them stashed all over the house wherever there's a bit of room.
I lost the man cave a few years back, but I have been promised by "her in doors" that I get a dedicated gaming room once we move. :D
I use two 6' x 4' marine ply boards, with taped edges and painted dark blue (for naval games - appropriate scenery and cloth for land games), these are slotted onto two plinths made from Ikea shelving blocks which allow lots of under-table storage. I can use them as two separate tables or as a single 8x6 or 12x4 (usually it stays as an 8x4).
This is housed in my purpose built games room:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/zippee/sets/72157633554453675/
which includes some before and construction pics as well (but note the table is not complete at the time of photography!)
Just a moss green faux fur throw over the dining room table, little narrow but i manage. Mostly play games lengthwise focusing on a narrom front ;D
For war at sea i have blue kallistra hexon boards wich just about fit the table in the right configuration.
Can I say that I am jealous? What are good sizes for a table? What is the largest size table you would consider using?

Six feet by four minimum I would say - unless you only play 10mm. Never more than six feet wide, however long you make it. Pretty well impossible to reach the middle if you do. I'd make it as long as practicable. You can always use only part of the table for a small game; lengthening a smaller table is difficult at the best of times.
I agree with Hertsblue. You only really need to be able to get to 3 sides of the table so you could butt one up against a wall to give you extra space
I have four cheapish foldable trestles and two 4X4 MDF-boards. Easy to set up and stow away.

A table.
I get to take over our conservatory once a week for gaming. Its a nice long space, but does need a fan heater in the winter for warmth.
There is an ikea table in there, that is about 7' long when fully extended and I put 4 of 4x2' MDF boards on this to give a gaming surface, we tend it only use a 6x4 game space, but the ends are handy for casualties and cups of tea.
I am wondering if I can expand to 5' deep, but this would make it tight round the sides. There is plenty of space to extend the length if I had a matching table / trestles.
I'm stuck with 2 5 x 2.5ft office tables (so a 5ft x 5ft) for my permenant table and I get to use 4 4 x 2 (so and 8ft x 4ft) on the 8 x 3 dining room table when Mexican Dave comes round for a hiding.
And that is the mistake I made all those years ago, two industrial fire doors, painted and textured give me a 6'5" by 5' table, but my trestles are the solid wooden type and take up way too much space.
Two advantages, the boards are ery light, and I have Velcro on the underside and on the trestle top, which means no sliding! :)
I may need to upgrade.
We use three plastic paste tables http://reviews.diy.com/2191-en_gb/9254696/reviews.htm?sort=rating (http://reviews.diy.com/2191-en_gb/9254696/reviews.htm?sort=rating) to give a 6' by 6'. For all the reviews that say these tables are flimsy we've never had a problem in three years of using them. They pack down easily and a couple of them give you a convenient 6' by 4' table.

I'm really tempted by this idea myself as I need a folding table really as I can't do a permanent one.
Since I left my house 2 years ago, I now have to use my dinner table. With 3 MDF panels we have a playing area : 1,80m x 1,20m.
The only drawback is I can't set up a game the day before we play. ( Or my daughters and I will have to eat on the sofa.. hey, that may be an idea... :-\ :D )
I got an 8' by 4' piece of MDf from B&Q and got them to cut it into two 6' by 2' and a 4' by 2'. They are then easy to store and I built a wooden support so that I can put the whole lot on the edge of my paiting table and to either a 6' by 4' or if I want to clear the tabale then 8' by 4'.
I use 2' square TSS terrain tiles and then make scenary to add on top - keeps the flexibility
I have a 9ft by 5ft table tennis table, which is on wheels and folds in the middle. It will be delivered to my new place in the New Year, and I hope to get the odd game on it before my "man shed" is completed and I move to something more in line with my megalomaniac tendencies. I think the expression is something like Mwahaahaahaaaa! ;)
Mollinary
Ikea Dining table - with both leaves in its about 10 feet long - ideal for WSS
Mostly our 1metre round dining table. Works for skirmishes and smaller engagements. For bigger ones I must rely on the two clubs I am a member of.
Next year I will get 2 4x4s if the master of the house does not change the decision. :d
I' m moving in my new home so no table and no games at the moment. Like Last Hussar I bought a Ikea extensible table: 89x80 cm to 150x80 cm. I have a GW grass cloth and 120x120 cm hand painted fabric cloth. I hope to re-start to play and paint soon.

Megalomaniac tendencies are part of the job-spec, Mollinary. As are delusions of grandeur and an addiction to cast pewter. ;)
