Title: It's here! And some newbie questions...
Post by: Sevej on 26 August 2011, 07:13:32 AM
This morning Pendraken package arrived when I was at work. It takes about three weeks (take or give 1 day) to reach Indonesia. Can I claim to be the first Indonesian owner of Pendraken stuff?  :D It arrives just before the biggest holiday here.

Anyway, this is the first time I received minis and didn't think "ooh, gosh, these are small!" it's actually bigger than I thought.  ;D I think I can paint these  :P

There's a slight misunderstanding. I asked for some cavalry models with "Please leave out the pose with the lance pointing perpendicularly forward" but instead get the ones with charging lances  :-X Leon do get it right on the billmen though. But when I think about fantasy stuff which are a tad bigger than the historical stuff, I'm rather glad I get these ones. There's no way I'm going to fit 6 fantasy cav in a 'nice' way... and it'll look silly to have 6 knights/base vs 4 other-cav/base.

Now to the questions
1. Some of the lances are bent. Can I just straighten them using my grubby fingers, or do I have to do some special stuff (like hot/cold water method)?

2. What do you use to stick minis on the ice cream stick (for painting)?

3. How do I cut the flashes... clipper okay? Should I use x-acto knife?

4. Right now I have a GW primer, but I don't think it's gonna last long. I've scoured ace hardware, and they have very limited choice on primer (white or grey, no black). I also have searched for gesso, but again, only white gesso around here. I've been painting over black primer all my life  :-X so it's kinda a new challenge to paint on other types of primer. Do normal flat black spray paint works for primer?

(the main reason I'm asking this is if I buy GW primer locally, I've got to pay around GBP 14 for it, plus shipping)

5. I want to know about paint stripping options (in case I mess up badly). Would it cause the minis to come off their bases? Would I be able to salvage the MDF bases?

Thanks  :D

1) Fingers is fine, just wash after before eating - lead yuck!

2) pva glue - with a dab of water, after you've finished painting soak in a shallow tray of 50
]/50 pva water mixture and they'll come right off(and varnish your figures at the same time)

3) I'd defo say stick to the x-acto, clippers are too crude, plus x-acto allows you to follow curves.

4) Can't answer - I've always used white primer, but teh GW stuff is over priced! Anyone stock Vallejo locally?!

5) Unless you're planning to use NITROMORES, WHICH WILL STRIP FLESH FROM THE SKIN, a mate of mine sticks his in a seive in the dishwasher, but the base will be knackered!
Hope that helps...

Greetings from Bangkok! SE Asian wargaming has a future, it seems.
I've used white primer on scores of armies. You just have to be a bit more careful, because unpainted bits show.

Yep, as already mentioned, fingers are fine.

Quote2. What do you use to stick minis on the ice cream stick (for painting)?

Pretty much any glue that works (I`d use five minute Aroldite - the 2 part resin type) as its easy to pull the figure away when its done without leaving residue on the underside of the base... actually, personally, I just hold the base when I`m painting.

Quote3. How do I cut the flashes... clipper okay? Should I use x-acto knife?

Craft knife from any craft store.

Quote4. Right now I have a GW primer, but I don't think it's gonna last long. I've scoured ace hardware, and they have very limited choice on primer (white or grey, no black). Again, I just use a cheap matt spray paint from the hobby/craft store

Games Workshop won`t ship primer (or any spray can) abroad for security reasons - its their policy.

Nail varnish remover works for me :)

Would it cause the figure to come away from the base..... hmmm, possibly, not sure on that one to be honest  :-*

:-X This sounds horrible. Would the mixture darken/lighten/shine-en the figure?

I am a great fan of small files.  Just a little slower, and my finger tips thank me.  Great for getting the base flat (about the only cleaning needed for most of the figures I have ordered).

Wired I know, but trust me, it's fine!
It dries clear, use it on all my bases, bonds, sinks into gaps and holds sand down nicely, also works in reverse to lift figures off bases, it has a slight satin sheen, but when you carnish over the yop, it's fine, it also takes inks and paints on top easily.

I'm with Lentulus on using needle files to trim flash and a big No2 fine cut for filing bases flat - just be careful how you hold the figure though or you end up with an extreme manicure  :)

while cutting some thick flash off a 28mm figure using an x-acto type knife a couple of weeks ago the blade snapped, sprung up and hit me just above the eyelid. No damage done but a bit scary - clippers and needle files for me from now on! Shouldnt be an issue with 10mms though but even so....

I use the edge of the clippers to clean off any flash when I'm casting.  As long as you're careful with them, it works fine.  I tend not to use a knife as it blunts the blade pretty quickly and there is that snapping hazard!   X_X
