Title: A Quick Question About Dungeons and Dragons 3.5
Post by: sixsideddice on 20 August 2011, 04:39:53 PM
Open question to all (Nik, I have a feeling you may have the answer to this one),

Has anyone had any success... or even tried... using the 3.5 Miniatures Handbook alongside the 3.5 core rules?

I was just wondering how workable it would be to substitute the Miniatures Handbook Skirmish Rules to conduct rpg combat, but use the rest of the Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide for everything else?

Intrinsically I don`t see a problem, and it would greatly simplify things. The 25 pages of combat rules found in the Players Handbook seems a bit excessive to me. Any thoughts?

Cheers in advance guys,

Six  :)

Didn't Pathfinder pick up the 3.5 reigns?

Maybe there's some strip-out-able combat mechanics in there?

Hmmm, you could be right there Luddite. Nik`s the Pathfinder fan round here, maybe he`ll be able to confirm this.

But yeah, I`d deffo take a look and see if I can gain any insight.

I've not done it [don't have the Miniatures Handbook Skirmish Rules] - but would agree that 3.5 is inherently over-blown & complex in a whole raft of areas, particularly its combat...it's odd - I've watched a game where I've seen it flow, nice & fast & fluid - and then I've played it and it's been slow & cumbersome & beyond clunky.

I think one of the problems with it [& other RPGs] is the attitude of gamers: we've evolved beyond simplicity - wanting rules to cover everything & adjudicate for anything that we can think of...rather than RPGs being [& I'm quoting Vin Diesel here  8)] "the traning ground of our imagination", we seem to need a rulebook to tell us the 'answer'. Let me give you an example:

- in Basic D&D when I was ten, I would say, "I take a step, leap forward and up and try to stab down into the goblin's neck above his breastplate while I fend off the other one with a blow from my shield." The DM would look at a couple of numbers cross-referenced on a single table, think about the particular actions I'm attempting; I'd then roll a d20 & he'd say, "you leap towards the goblin and manage to glance a blow across his neck as you try to stab down; the goblin rushing you to your left ducks under your shield-thrust and stabs at you with his rusty blade..."

- in 3.5 the DM would need minis, look at move numbers, facings, look at multiple tables, consider modifiers for all kinds of skills & traits and wind direction blah-de-blah-de-blah blah...and would *probably* tell me I need to roll a 15. Or something.

Pathfinder is a huge improvement on 3.5 overall [tightening up a load of things] but I've not played it enough to comment particularly well to be honest.

Nope - a 'DP' is a "Dour Puritan"  ;)

I keep coming back to the idea [especially when my kids want to play] of using my old Basic D&D - or 1st edition AD&D - they weren't half simple y'know...and played well. Some of the 'clones' have improved them further too...definitely worth a look. [Oh - and don't forget Risus too, that's coolio].

Excellent example Nik. Take a look at "A Quick Primer For Old School Gaming". Its an excellent read. I printed my copy out so I could re-read it often, just so I never forget  ;)

Basic (and White Box) clones are wonderful aren`t they. Ah what ever would we do without the power of the internet.

Ah yes - thanks for the reminder, haven't read that in a while [will rectify now with my G&T  8)]

As to what ever we would do without the power of the internet - well, probably, paint more figures & play more games?  ;) :P :d
