I recently made this hill fort as part of my 10mm dark age Hail Caesar project. I am new to 10mm and the forum so any critiques would be appreciated. There are more pictures and a clearer tutorial on my blog.

I used paper clay and toothpicks to make the palisade walls. The inner wall was made with paper clay, gravel and spackle.
I am still working on the gate houses as I wanted them to be detachable from the fort for sieges.
Here are two pictures of the fort. The first one is just of the foam hill and paperclay. The last one is after painting and flocking.
I can definitely say that I am a 10mm convert. From a terrain builders perspective, I can store All of my 10mm stuff in the same space as 1 large 28mm piece. I wish I tried 10mm years ago........

We hear that a lot y'know ;) ;D
Very cool!
Looking great!
Looking excellent, just need some attacking hordes now!
Turned out quite nice! I have yet to try my hand at terrain pieces and your tutorial should come in handy.

The palisades at the hill forts in the English West Country overlap so that the gates are less vulnerable to a quick charge. Other than that it looks pretty good. :-bd
Very nice!! Good work!
Very nice indeed, and welcome :D
Cheers,
Kev
Going to steal this for my Dark Ages project!
Very nice =D>
Thanks for the encouragement. I still have a bit of work to do on it before it is complete. The gatehouses still need to be made as well as the buildings. (not to mention the armies that will fight it out nearby!) I tried to make the fort as generic as possible so I can interchange building and gatehouses to match the period. I figure those will catch the eye first so will need extra attention. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I just lost my 10mm viginity, so I still have lots to learn. What I've learned so far is that sometimes you can reduce the scale from 28 to 10mm and it looks great with less work. Other things require a different perspective on distance and viewpoint. I haven't wrapped my finger around it yet, but I am enjoying myself immensely. It reminds of when I painted my first 28mm lead figures after teaching myself to paint with 1/72 plastics.
The Hill Fort is truly exceptional. Excellent work.
Very very nice. I like your fort. My compliments!
Thanks for all the encouragement.
Currently, I am working on building for the fort and a village. I'll post some picks up as soon as they are ready.
Here is a photo of the work in progress for the village surrounding the hill fort. It is still in the rough stages but should look alright after some tidying and painting. Everything is made with paper clay and deco stones. What's a deco stone?
You can read more about it on my blog.

Nice work!
I started work on the hill for the monastery.
http://miniaturesaga.blogspot.com/2011/11/large-hill.html (http://miniaturesaga.blogspot.com/2011/11/large-hill.html)
Now, I need to get some villagers and monks. Does anyone know any suitable figures in the Pendraken range? How about sheep and cattle? I know that Irregular has some 10mm livestock.

There's the kneeling monk in the Norse range, and some standing monks in the Medieveals, code ELM37. For villagers and peasants, not too sure, you could play about with some of the Anglo Saxon types?

Just ordered pretty much everything mammalian from the catalogue for collection at Wafare this weekend so I'll let you know if there is anything suitable. ;)
(Definitely no sheep, but there maybe something suitable for cattle.)
Yes, the kneeling monk (NO6) will do.
Also, the standing monks (ELM 37) should be okay.
For civilians, I've found some figures without shields that should be okay.
I was thinking (unarmoured billmen) EMM5 and EMM6 (staffslingers) should be okay as well with some conversion (spears to staves)
The armed peasants (ELM 14 might be fine with some conversion)
How about these figures?
AR11 - Spanish Slingers (with the right paint job)
ARL18- Druid Merlin figure only
What about female beggars (FBG7) and halflings as children?
Again thank you for your help.

They sound fine, the only one I'd be unsure of would be the Fantasy Beggars, as they're a little taller than the regular historical ranges. If you're placing an order, I could always pop a few samples of them in for you to look at?
Having just ordered HAlflings, they are wider and taller in proportion to Pendraken normal humans (but the cloaked swords, bow and spear may suffice)
Hoild on, did I just say Halfings are BIG too...
Ah!
Ooops!
*Sound of footsteps running away*
*Door slams as Mad Lemmey runs away from obvious oxymoron!* ;D
I think that I've got the male villagers and priests. Still no women and children. Perhaps they were wise enough to hide them from the Vikings.......
I'll be ordering be placing an order very soon. My better half is getting me Pendraken for Christmas......No Cologne! No Belt! No Wallet! No Aftershave! Hip Hip Hooray!
Thank you all for the help!
