Title: Useful codes for anyone doing Maximilian
Post by: Leon on 04 August 2011, 06:31:33 PM
We've had these sent through from a customer, so thought I'd share them for anyone considering getting into the Franco-Mexican war.

MAXIMILIAN WAR - OOB

For the uniforms I have mainly used the Osprey 272, The Mexican Adventure and a book / pamphlet issued by Freikorps 15 entitled “Campaign Booklet No 2 â€" The Maximilian War” by David Allsop and Anthony G Canavan.

I have concentrated purely on the Mexicans as the French range is extensive. The best matches for the troop types in the Pendraken range I have found are as follows;

MAXIMILIANS IMPERIALIST MEXICANS

MX1   Empress Lancers (Officers of this unit had kepis - I have used FPW 22)
AU 3            Austrian Legion
AU 4             Austrian Legion artillery
AU 18            as above for limbers
SCW 20         Mounted Contra guerillas
FPW 11         Contra Guerilla infantry
IT 3            Cazadores de Mexico as shown in Osprey plate H.
NPF 19   Maximilian's horse grenadiers - OK, so they probably fought in kepi's or shakos but they look good in the helmets.

JUARISTAS

H 1 (Hanoverian infantry)   Elite Republican unit - the Supremos Poderes

MIX 'N' MATCH - GOOD FOR BOTH SIDES INCLUDING GUERILLAS AND GENERAL NE'ER DO WELLS

AU 16,  FPW 21, PPW 5,
SAP 14            Generals / officers
SAP 1 - 6            Infantry of both sides
SAP 8 - 10            Cavalry of both sides
SCW 20 / MX 1         Guerillas and misc cavalry
SAP and ACW artillery

NOTES

1   The havelocks in the SAP range are particularly appropriate for this war.

2   Difficult to match up the Austrian uhlans, the Austrian hussars and the Red Hussars of the later period because of the hats. Also somewhat difficult are the Belgians although a cannabilised version of the Austrian jager (AU3) might just serve. The other option (not yet bought or painted by me) is an SCW figure in the Isabelino cap - this can probably be made to match the figure at plate G of the Osprey book.

3   We play our battles using Fire and Fury Regimental rules with a few add ons, such as unknown morale and guerillas who, when they die, can come back on at any side of the playing area two or three turns later, on the roll of a die!

That's really useful (not that this is a conflict I've considered gaming) - perhaps we should all look to our own notes etc for where we've worked out proxies / subs / workarounds...

So what do I use for a "nun", and gunfighter - 2 Mules for Sister Sarah (and yes I probably misspleed that name Nik)
