Title: WW2 British (Late War) - commission for JC
Post by: nikharwood on 21 July 2011, 06:15:45 PM
This is a nice battlegroup - based around the BKC20 British Infantry Battalion pack [with a pack of Officers & RTOs added] - and with late war European theatre Brits instead of 8th Army Desert Rats [thanks Leon  8)]

Anyway: assembled, based & textured:

 8)  Looking forward to seeing these progress.

I like these Painting Diaires, they're a great way of showing people what the figures look like.

Cool looking battlegroup, but I have a couple of questions/ comments, Nik

1) Are you really now getting commissions from the almighty ?

2) Helmets - I would be going with dark green for late war brits

3) Truck tilts - I think these were a green colour, basically the same as the truck bodies (though I tend to go for a slightly different green shade just for contrast)

4) Micky Mouse cammo - this was pretty common on softskins in NWE, it also looks cool - basically lots of overlapping black circles, but only on softskins.

5) White stars - these always look good on the top surfaces

Anyway, please take the above as constructive criticisms - in the time you have paint this lot I have managed to paint 3 warmaster stands of skirmishers (about 20 figures!)

Nah Forbes, JC is from Arizona: pretty sure the *other* JC can paint his own  8)

2) I'll need to check that then...

3) From my references I've seen enough in both khaki & green - and they look *boring* in green if you ask me...

4) I'll need to check that then...again, I've seen both with & without - don't particularly like it myself...

5) I'll see if I can dig some out...

No worries mate - thanks for this - and especially for waiting until I'd posted pics of them "almost finished" (& there was me thinking I'd finished these)...

Did you want a Christmas card this year then?  :P ;) ;D  :d

Anyway, I've emailed JC asking him what he'd like me to do...

Nice job Nic, but no tac signs ?

Also - on soft skins gthe entire vehicle was painted same colour, often with the mickey mouse ear cammo. - But I do as you do and paint the canvas a different colour.

Think it's an 'Airfix generation' thing always done the same myself though I am considering doing the canvas in a lighter shade of the body colour instead. Recently changed my LW German canvas tilts from grey to dark yellow so perhaps the Allies should follow suit.

Thanks Forbes - appreciated [I still think that camo scheme looks bobbins though  ;D]

Another question - my internet meanderings tonight seem to suggest that not all units used this hideous camo but that it was down to the discretion of individual commanders? And for every pic of one in MM camo I can find more that are plain...

What about the Dingos? Plain?

Tactical markings - anyone got an idiot's guide? Colour / shape / location...again, my searching is throwing up all kinds of info - too many woods, not enough trees!

My Google-fu is weakened...I feel like a complete duffer tonight  :(

Dingos I think would be plain

As you say different units went for disruptive patterns or not, on their softskins.

Dazza's links give you all the badges. But not sure there was one that says what goes where
Arm of service badge (coloured square with white number) on the right hand side
divisional badge on the left side (though there are plenty of examples the other way round)
both on front and back

AT and field guns had no markings

Re the Cromwells

In 11th AD Cromwells should have Green over blue 45, for the armoured recce regt. Only in 7th AD would the red be right as they and all Cromwells

I dont disagree Fred, that would make them 15/19 King's Royal Hussars - Armoured Recce Regt.

But I already had them so gave another regiment some spare Cromwells found on the beach :)

Humber Armoured Car, towed 25pdrs has to be from an infantry division (not 15th as their Recce Regt had Daimlers) Dingos technically not used in infantry divisions but bttln commanders seemed to acquire all sorts of vehicles as their runarounds and they are on HQ stands.

Towed 25pdrs make up half an armoured divisions Artillery. I am afraid with the British you do have to pick a division - as all were different.

Squadron markings were often on the hull, particualrly with the armoured recce regts.

I know but they did not have Humber Armoured Cars, worked with Armoured Car Regts but they used Daimlers.

Humber A/C's use in some A/Car Rgt HQ's instead of Staghound, although the Staghound is more common. Humber Lt Recce and Scout cars - Inf Div only I think, but it is hard to tell.

Never heard of Humber A/C used by Arm Car Regt in NWE I have to say.
LRC was pretty much exclusive to the Inf Recce Regts (why would anyone else want them?).
Humber Scouts were mainly in the liaison troops of Armoured & Tank Regts IIRC (plus a few in Inf Bttlns of Armoured Divs)
They is an article on Warwheels.net showing distribution of armoured cars in 21st Army

http://www.warwheels.net/BritACsInEurope44_45BROWN.html

Shows some Humber 37mm in the Armoured divisions though no idea where the fit in the TO&E.
Truxmodels site had pretty good info too but it went offline a month or so ago.
Only the Germans had more exceptions to the rules than us Brits though so it's almost a case on anything goes.

Right - thanks all for pointers etc: these are now complete & JC is happy with them so they're going to get varnished & packed up; I've done MM camo onto the quads but it looked odd / rubbish on the trucks so I repainted them back to plain green. This was a really enjoyable battlegroup to paint  :)

Once they're completely matt-ed I'll take some on-table pics for the Photos section.

Very nice Nik, but no stripes, or pips?, no div/unit sholder flashes (says ducking). Also the Brits tended to either cover or paint out the hull/body side star, and only carry the roof one. Final one for info, 44 onward in Europe the FAC woul be an M5 1/2 track, and carry a roundel (Type A?) with all 3 colours on the bonnet. That came from Alan Halilton, his dad was one in Europe.

Looking really good now. Did you hand paint the tac marks? The Micky Mouse on the quads looks good.

I'll disagree with Ian over white stars - while on tanks the side white stars where painted over, soft skins seem to have remain liberally coated in them.

Forbes - thanks mate; yes, all hand-painted - and thanks to all for the help with signage etc - really appreciated & I know JC is really happy with these  8)

Looks great Nik.  That will be a sweet looking army on the table.

I tend to not be that picky on 10 mm myself.  One of the fun things of switching from 28 mm.  Any extra effort on 10 mm just makes 'em that much better in my opinion.
