Title: 10mm basing for WMA, DBA, FOG, etc.
Post by: gregdman on 14 June 2011, 04:09:56 AM
Hi all,

I am planning my next 10mm armies purchase (alexandrian greek/successors and early imperial romans), and would like to base the figures in such a way as to be compatible for WMA, plus other rules (DBA for quick games, WMA, FOG, perhaps even WAB or others).  I am considering mounting the various 10mm figures at 2x the number listed under the DBA 15mm scale (as suggested in the DBA rules for 10mm or smaller figures).

I am also planning on mounting the figures on 20mm frontage magnetic bases placed in metal trays of the varying appropriate sizes (i.e. 40x20 or whatever) per the rules we would be playing under on a given day.

Has anyone else based their 10mm figures this way or have advice to give in this area?  My goal is flexible playability, or perhaps playable flexibility...  :)

Thanks!
-Greg

I would base everything on a 40mm frontage which works for WMA/DBx/FOG and treat them as 2 figures in WAB. If playing a lot of WAB do a few half bases on 20mm frontage for casualty removal. Depth would depend very much on which system you are likely to play the most or if you are particularly bothered by the recoil distances in DBA. If it does worry you go for BDA depths if not 20mm for everything it will work. As to number of figures I think double the number of 15mm DBA looks a bit sparse for infantry so I would suggest 2.5 to 3 for cavalry just 1 extra figure. Not sure if number of figures per base matters in WMA but it is a useful guide in DBx/FOG but as long as everyone knows whats what you don't have an issue.

On a side note I keep meaning to do 10mm DBA on the 25mm stands so they really look like armies. Too many projects on the go already though.

Roughly twice as many foot as you would vfor 15's, I tend to use the 20mm depth for all, and put horse von 20x20 to use in the warmaster series as well as DBM/DBA/HOTT or FOG.

I find 20mm x 20mm a good all-round standard. The base will accomodate 3-4 infantry or 2 cavalry. These build up into multiples very easily. Artillery frontages usually depend on the number of guns in the battery.

I do appreciate, however, that specialist cases - elephants, chariots, catapults etc. - need larger bases.

Great feedback.   Thanks Ian, Nigel and Hertsblue  :)

I use Warmaster 40mm frontage bases for this type of thing. Can't go far wrong!

Since DBA and FoG use the same base sizes, you won't have any difficulties there.  Warmaster uses a different basing system and WAB another again.  However, if you're planning to paint up both sides, that won't be a problem for any of the rule sets as the key is to be consistent.

Warmaster uses a different basing system ...

But includes guidelines on using DBx basing IIRC (in the Ancients version)
