Here I leave some paint conversion to generic space opera range. They were ACW pendraken soldiers and now... a mix of cyborgs, soldiers in suits, colonist, or whatever. Enjoy them!

This is my first unit of my Christian kingdom army (same list as El Cid army) to fight against my increasing almohade army (same list as almoravid army). Medieval warmaster system

The unit is a templar unit. Knights from Santiago order. They have the early cross of Santiago order instead the more popular evolution of the cross.

Thanks Nikharwood! you also have a great salahadin army! are you planning building up a templar army?

I will need to make a little order to Leon to finish my arab army, and some reinforcement for my upcoming christian kings army.

My project is about Las Navas de Tolosa 1212. It is a slow project because I do not have enough time, but I have great fun building it up

I like the leather brown and the other reddy brown as a base coat, especially for horses. I tend to overpaint most of it but it creates a better starting point than white or black, and you can leave bits unpainted. For horses these colours are great as with a bit of a wash and dry brush you are done.

I've not tried their shades but often use my own wash.

Yep, you are right... should be sand, but to fit with the rest of my orc and goblin army I continue with green grass.

I should try different textures in the bases... the problem is I am little lazy, so when basing I have my green grass pot, and it is soooo easy basing

New project, time for some Sci Fi

The other day I made some buildings

Because I do not have color printer I use color sheet of paper and I like the result.

Time of construction of 3 buildings: 15-20 min.

Time of destruction of 1 building: less than a minute

Then I made a squad of lizardmen with laser weapons and some mounted/"motorbikes" for the lizardmen

Nice. Good to hear that my colour scheme acted as an inspiration for yours.

The figures do look good in red. Which figure is the raptor rider?
Title: Re: jchaos gallery
Post by: jchaos79 on 02 March 2014, 08:07:04 AM
Raptor raider is:

wizard lizardmen:cutting its legs, and making a groove in the book to fit the neck of the raptor

+

raptor: is not in the website, I ask leon for him. It is a prototipe of the figure used in the range of lizards as mount. But istead of thin neck and small head, this prototype has big head like a sort of bird-dinosaure.

Hope I explained myself.  :(

Anyway forbes your army it is a great source of inspiration and very nicely done.  8)

I thought it looked like the wizard - that raptor is nice. It is a nice variant on the standard long necked ones, it would be good to have it in production.

Glad that you like the Nature army - its been great fun to put together over the last year, from both sourcing all the figures to make up the different units, to painting them (many of which have been nice and fast to paint, to actually getting some games in with it.

Guards from the Harem of the Mighty Sultan Mustafá al Gadafi,

The idea pops remembering the guard of the libian dictator, a bunch of fatal and beautiful women holding maching guns.

Guards from the Harem are highly skilled slaves trainned to make love to the sultan and war to the rest of the men. The leader of this regiment is Dalaila, a empire born from Tilean who was kidnapped by arabs pirates while whe was a children. Now an assasin of exceptional beauty is the most loyal follower of the Sultan.

When things goes bad for Mighty Sltan Mustafá al Gadafi in the battle, he join this unit of camel raiders and launches himself to the heat of the war.

This unit is camel raider + banner of defence (warmaster ruleset)

Again the base is not complete, I need to get sand to cover the base

Miniproject: Kislev, Defenders of the Homeland.

Unit: 2nd regiment of volunteers from Kislev (profile archers)

Training archers means skilful and strong men and long time of training to obtain a useful unit. In times of invasion those requirements are not always achived.

Handgunners are not accurate (or safe!), expensive to produce and are useless in damp weather. But it is relatively easy to train troops to use them. The Citiy of Kislev which has a high income due to the trade with the Empire can afford to invest in handguns and can raise quickly some regiments of volunteers in times of invasion.

2nd regiment is leaded Sergei Zwovensco,  the fifth son of a rich family that make their fabolous wealth with the trade of Furr.

I think our Viet Nam little project is almost complete, the pack of mules is an add on that pops me reading the cold war commander list.

You could see our figures VN figures finished and based here http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,10601.0.html

At this time I would like to explore Cross fire but in the future I would like to play the period with CWC, then maybe I will make an expansion of VN armies.

I also painted a huey (not a very good painting), but I did not take a picture and now I did not have it with me. Maybe Ed (if he read this lines) could upload a picture.

I would like to move to a new project in the next months: Ottoman Turks, army of the half moon. But you know the wargaming intention is like surfing a wave...

Currently I am basing and finishing an old project, Poseidon and his fishmen critters army. It is only left to paint a unit of mairmaids, have the idea but now I need to make it real.

Thank you guys; about the muted palette recently I start to use a new method. It was a kind of accident. I start using as a physical palette the bottom of the top of my recently new dirty water bottle with no other intention than make some mix of color. The next day, when the bottle is screwed, I saw that the moisture inside the bottle has keep the color fresh so I could still use the mixes made days ago. Then I though thas is a kind of water palette but cheaper and easy to make.

Also some moister condensate, so colors blends each other resulting in interesting degrees of colors. Sometimes you do not want that, but other times pops up interesting tonalities that you are not searching, so serendipity happens.

It is easy, it is simple, it is fast, no cost money, nor effort of building and keep your colour mixes per days, and it is possible to blend itself the colors! (beware do not shake after or before the bottle is closed)

Use it and if you are satisfied send me 5 pound to help me investing in Pendraken figures  :D

Now it is time for some characters

Project: Outlaws from the Empire

Character: Jens the wanderer (hero)

This famouse burglar wander across the Empire, cheating, stealing and assaulting to the rich coaches of the nobility. He works alone, with only company of his mule. Hated by the Counts and beloved by the peasants he is handsome, a heartbreaker and quite polite and sofisticated during his robberies.

Character: Aelfgar the assasin

Probably Aeflgar had battled in Hasting, probably he earned the nickname of assasin for some reason, probably he is a good sailor, but for sure, Aelfgar loves the beer, the brawl and the party!

Project: Wierd War II, British army

Unit: Desert Rats, secret arm of the 8th army.

In 1946 world continues. German and British are in a race of technology and genetic combination is appearing as a rude tool for enhance soldiers. While german collect genes beyond the Himalaya seeking for the ario- übersoldaten, british scientific search in the opposite direction. They do not matter to breed soldiers with one of the more resilient creature of the earth...rats.

Experiment 52 was a quite succeed and the subject survive its first 48 hours of life. Now they have to test the new soldiers in the deserts of Tunez. This new division belongs to the 8th army so Desert rats are back into the war.

The section has 3 regular bases of soldier with granades and hand weapons.

The section also have a support machine gun, and panzerfaust (captured to german) anti vehicle. Sometimes the soldier reject the rat genes starting with ticks and sucidal tendencies, last figure is representing this (for special rule).

Unit: 1st unit of giant crabs

Gaint crabs are strong lethal, not too much intelligent but with enough brains to follow the orders straigh for.

I face the problem that diameter of the base are bigger than 20mm, so do not fit in warmaster bases, so I use the third dimension. Some putty dunes were made to tilt a little bit the figure and to fit with the central base.

 :D Thanks guys

Continuing the Halloween weekend I just finished two terrorific units

Project: Vampire count and all things that bump in the night

Unit: 1st Pack of werewolves

This pack is a clan of werewolves, they are all related and when the moon raises they feel the change and gather together to go wild.

I would use the stats of the gouls to represent this unit because the werewolves are alive, but probably I buy them a banner or magical item to improve the profile and fit better with the idea of werewolves.

Project: Vampire count and all things that bump in the night

Unit: 1st gathering of tormented souls / ethereal host

When someone pass away full of hate or because a great unjustice they became a powerfull spirit, condemn to roam the night. Other spirits feels the atraction of the powerful entity so it happens a gathering of tormented souls. The leader of this gathering is the Headless rider.

Project: Poseidon and fishmen army

Unit: Poseidon, Lord of the seas. General of the army

is one of the twelve Olympian deities of the pantheon in Greek mythology. His main domain is the ocean, and he is called the "God of the Sea". Additionally, he is referred to as "Earth-Shaker" due to his role in causing earthquakes, and has been called the "tamer of horses". He is usually depicted as an older male with curly hair and beard.

Project: Poseidon and fishmen army

Unit: 1st group of mermaids

Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Africa and Asia. The first stories appeared in ancient Assyria, in which the goddess Atargatis transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human lover.

Ariel is the leader of the group. She is hungry today, so she sits on the rocks... and starts singing

Thanks for the comments,

Project: Poseidon and fishmen army

Unit: 1st Tritons or hippocampi

In the Iliad, Homer describes Poseidon, who was god of horses (Poseidon Hippios), earthquakes, and the sea, drawn by "brazen-hoofed" horses over the sea's surface. Sea horses continue in medieval times and appears sometimes as centuars with fish tails. Even related with sea horses is the sea goat or capricorn from Zodiac.

Anyway, this unit describes the horses of Poseidon and triton (son of poseidon) is heading the ride.

Specials thanks to Geep, who was searching some horses for his woodelf army, and provokes that dry_erase shows some spare horses which give me the idea of this unit. Special thanks to dry_erase too!

Project: Vampire counts and aristocracy of the night

Character: Black coach

Black Coach is a form of chariot, pulled by a pair of Nightmares, who are controlled by a Wraith. This terrible creation is protected by the arcane wards, able to stop even the most powerful of blows. Its sight on the battlefield causes great terror, with whole regiments fleeing form this abomination; needless to say, they usually meet their death under the wheels of the coach.

I post here this units because they content some pendraken figures

Project: Dark elves, under the spell of Morathi the witch

Unit: 5ht of infantry, herd of slaves

Slaves of dark elves are from distant points of the world, from the deepest mines of the dwarves to the distant jungles of lustria or even raids in the heart of empire brings citizens to the dungeons. In some battles dark elves release slaves as herd conducted by executioners. The slaves fights for thier lives against dark elves' enemies. Fear makes them fanatics.

Project: Dark elves, under the spell of Morathi the witch

Character: Morathi the Witch

Morathi the Hag Sorceress is the mother of Malekith. She was the second wife of Aenarion who rescued her from a Slaaneshi warband in the days of the first Chaos invasion before The Sundering. She is also the first Hag queen of the Witch Elves. Morathi can be seen as the indirect cause of The Sundering as it was she who introduced the pleasure cults to Ulthuan.

Thanks Hertsblue, I have in mind play (in solo mode) the campaign of Vlad the Impaler (GW historic supplement) , so the army will be for 1462. Maybe a little modification in some scenarios making Vlad a real vampire  :d with a fun houserule or something. But I expect to play it in the future because I need to build first the armies needed.

Thanks, the pitty is that my Marabou Mattlock varnish is almost finished and the last material is thick and gives a coarse coat and little gloss aspect. Before the varnish the colors where more pastel or reals colors.

But I learned some time ago, that I prefere loose some slight tones with the varnish than have chips in my miniatures during a game or the transport. So I am happy :)

If by interesting effects you mean "every figure looks like a GW CHAOS MUTANT WITH SPIKEY BITS" as painted by my early teenage self (MOAR COLOUR! SHADING? LINING? WHAT DAT? MOAR PAINT!) then I guess :D

And then I'd be beaten to death by my other half for letting the wee one chew spikey metal and drink potentially ungood paint...

What flock are you using Chaos?
Title: Re: jchaos gallery
Post by: jchaos79 on 15 February 2015, 10:04:29 AM
I use different flock, from army painter to GW, natural material from the surronding of the house or real beach sand and also pendraken (it is a pitty they stop it).

But the one used for this guys is from a new railway matt. New matts always loose a lot of flock, so I gather it and re use it.

I was though for the Nazis a sort of ubersoldaten  in a Jin Ro style

Pendraken walker painted as Blacksmith do, some zombies and an a 1945 WWII germans.

Project: Kislev infantry warriors

Unit: 6th regiment of infantry

6th regiment is high mobile unit compose by hunters and warriors. Their missions cover form been able to ambush the enemy through difficult terrain or get food for the army in campaign.
They use the skating in the winter tundra of Kislev or beyond

( I use a wrought conversion of  WWII [PEN] GR13 - Alpine cross country skier to make this kislevites (fantasy renaissance russian guys)

Project: Court of Delirium (Faes of Hubris)

Unit: 1st regiment of Cave Trolls

Trolls are a kind of twisted Faeries, deformed and huges. Some of them lived in the depth of the Caverns and some of them are enslaved by Dark Elves.

Note about Court of Delirium, as I am painting with my 2 years old boy I am more worried about saftey than the result of the minis. So I am starting a Court of Delirum army. The base colours are painted by the child, and then a wash and in some cases I paint some more or less quick details to enhance the figure. Result is wierd colours, and strange combinations, but ....hey! they are Faeries aren´t them?

Maybe I should open a threat to recieve feedback of experience players...  :-\

Some mobs of gnomes not only defend the little kingdom or the subkingdom where they have their laboratories and workshops, but sometimes they could raid human farms.

Project: Little People - Naughtly Gnomes
Unit: 3rd, gnome mob, elder

The old gnomes rarely go into the battle. They are not specially good in combat, they act as young ones. The skill of the elders is wisdom, self control and device knowlage.

Project: Little People - Naughtly Gnomes
Unit: 1std, pikes

The professional warriors or the guard gather in pikes formations, like phalanges. They use long wooden pikes with the tip sharpened. Gnomes make great efforts to practice and train the formation but rarely work during the heat of battle.

Character: Old Elf King and his shieldwall

In the deep of the forest there is a little kingdom dwelled by Gnomes and ruled by a cruel and old King.

Hmm, have you been watching Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom recently...?  :-\

Haha, so nice!

In my father's there is a horn used when making prospection with TNT to aware the workers that an explosion will occur. So believe me, is far away to be toot-toot noise. My son take that horn and state "I'm Daniel elf" then he blow it... and he loves it.  Sooo, where I could get this magazine ??

Nice. Like the unit background write ups.

I think every 10mm unit or regiment or 28mm miniature to be painted deserve a little parragraph. If you could not write a line about it, then is not worth the time to paint it. I use to think a little bit about it during the painting and sometimes appear a new dimension or make me wonder and read new things about, or how to use it in the battlefield.

Said that, I have to apology for the gramma because sometimes is not easy to sum up or transmit the feeling of the unit in other lenguage. Sometimes, I re-read some descriptions in the following weeks, and then I think, wow how I could made that mistake, but I am not always fresh when I steal 5 minutes to write in the forum.

After months of inactivity in 10mm scale I am slowly returning (in my scarce time). So first step is to complete the  unbased figures I left in the draw time ago... now I am stealing time to prime a kislev wagon and some figures to make the Red Guard.... anyway... now a little bit of Victorian Sci fi or Steampunk for In Her Majesty's Name.

They are Lord Curr's company.

- Lord Edward Conan Curr, a maverik, adventurer, leader and ex soldier. Armed with Arc rifle. Talents: Explorer, leader, fearless and tough.
- Lady Felicity "Two gun test", Lord Curr constant companion. Two small italian custom made pearl handed pistols. Talents: Socialite and gunslinger.
- "Mad Mick" Macfarlane, is a brilliant scotish engineer, "seriously deranged, but quite possible a genius". Arc pistol and a vaiety of granades. Talents: Engenieer and fanatic
- Mohan singh Lord Curr's loyal sikh manservant, he so strong and massive that could fire a machine gun from the hip. Machine gun Talent: Strongman

-Then the Incorregibles, nº1, 2, 3 and 4. a mix band of revolutionaries, ex soldiers & street toughs. Rifles and shotguns. No talents

Here it is the original Lord Curr's Company ( I tried to put the charcter in the same position to compare them)

Impressive, isn't it. One could think why using 10mm to replicate those 28mm marvelous and characterfull figures? are we crazy?
I have two resopnses: The main one is because I love 10mm. The second one, is OK 28mm are so excited, and great... but do you have time and space to build a victorian neibourghood in 28mm, a Tibetan temple and the inside of a Zeppelin? Only thoso three scenarios will collapse my real house, and the game is good, but not soo good. I could replicate this three scenarios in 10mm and keep them inside three shoe boxes.

I also finished a sci fi base. It represents two civil humans. They are painted in space opera pale blue and yellow mood. They could fit in Dropzone Commander as UCM governor and assistant (objective marker) or for Aliens games, as colonies of the Wayland CoOrporation.

My own 10mm Homeric armies stalled somewhat as we are still waiting for the range to be completed, archers, skirmishers at the least still needed.

No, I do no think Pyrrhus have camelry. I am painting an army to play Asculum. I am using Succesor list for Warmaster Ancient system. Well once I reached the 1000 points I need for the battle, I paint a couple of ends and odds for other battles. I had those mahadist camel raiders so I thought could be nice figure for arab camels If I ever play Diadocs wars.

Well, before you asked it is the same as the persian light cavarly of the picture. For Ausculum I will  use only the phalanxs, the elephants and the cavalry. Maybe I could swap one of cavalry for some Italic allys (samnites) light infantry, I did not decied it yet. I have to make the points again.

In the Roman side, they used in Ausculum some Anti-Elephant weapons, it is seems to be some trumpeters and javalin men with fire on carts. If I have time could be fun to make that unit as a special for Ausculum.

First glance was really interesting. Then I started a deeper reading and get a little bit confuse, but I a had to say that I am not a grognard in Napoleonic warfare. I give the book to my brother who is making a 2mm Nap army and he had read other napoleonic rules. He likes Shako, so I am waiting for his impression about guns n colours, and he decide if we go for Shako way or Guns n colors way.

In my opinion it is a ruleset that I could love, but need to be read and studied and tested.

Dionysius of Halicarnassus describes the carts thus:

"Outside the line they stationed the light-armed troops and the waggons, three hundred in number, which they had got ready for the battle against the elephants. These waggons had upright beams on which were mounted movable traverse poles that could be swung round as quick as thought in any direction one might wish, and on the ends of the poles there were either tridents or swordlike spikes or scythes all of iron; or again they had cranes that hurled down heavy grappling-irons. Many of the poles had attached to them and projecting in front of the waggons fire-bearing grapnels wrapped in tow that had been liberally daubed with pitch, which men standing on the waggons were to set afire as soon as they came near the elephants and then rain blows with them upon the trunks and faces of the beasts. Furthermore, standing on the waggons, which were four-wheeled, were many also of the light-armed troops — bowmen, hurlers of stones and slingers who threw iron caltrops; and on the ground beside the waggons there were still more men."

I like your general idea but would have velites and slingers manning the carts, not legionary types and would use four wheeled carts.

Maybe ARR5 & ARR8 for wagons crews and attendant infantry and ELM17 the Hussite War Wagon without the medieval crew but with added beams and oxen for the carts?

Flaming pigs?
Title: Re: jchaos gallery
Post by: jchaos79 on 01 August 2016, 07:17:42 PM
Thanks Ithoriel, that is really intersting information.

The figures you porpouse and the hussite wagon are defenitively excellent to make the anti elephant weapon.

Unfortunately I do not have all those figures. I would like to include blowing pipes and trumpets to scare the elephants, as I read somwhere Roman use them.

In the war against Hannibal (If I do remember correctly), roman use pigs to scare the elephants and carthaginian start to train their elephant with pigs to get use to them. But this is another unit and I am not going to mix pig with wagons.

Maybe I could hold the idea of anti-elephant unit  I had three 4 wheel carts, and a handfull of velites, that I think is part of the essential of the unit.

Thanks  :)

The relevant passages are Polyaenus, "Stratagems" 4.6.3 and Aelian, "On Animals" 16.36. The Megarans broke the siege of their city by coating pigs with flammable materials and driving them towards Antigonas One-Eye's elephants. Faced with a a herd of panicked, squealing, flaming pigs the elephants understandably decided discretion was the better part of valour and legged it. Antigonas' army being left more than a little untidy and reduced in numbers as a result.
