Title: Richard Holmes
Post by: cameronian on 01 May 2011, 11:17:45 AM
Prof Holmes died this morning after a protracted battle with cancer. Most of us will be familiar with his books, some will have had the incomparable pleasure of his company, a very sad loss indeed.

That's a real shame, he'll be missed, he was a great speaker and a captivating presenter. He had his flaws, but he had such great entheusiasm for the subject that he was an incredibly captivating speaker who I'm sure has inspired many others, like me, to branch out into whole new periods of war, warfare and war games research.

Very knowlagable, and very frendly. One of my fellow students on a Military Studies MA rang him up and got great advice.

Great shame, I recently watched his series on the American war of independence. I always enjoyed his books and tv programmes.

This was one newapaer obit that made me sit up and blink. Always loved his programmes and books, and about four years ago a friend of mine had the opportunity to tour the Italian 1859 and 1866 battlefields with him. Apparently he was a superb raconteur. Will be sadly missed.

Never met the man but have several of his books. His TV series was memorable.
