If anyone has not found this before, try this:

http://www.nla.gov.au

Then search for Austro-Prussian War 1866

Now that's what I call steep valleys!

It isn't until you see these maps that you get a real idea of the terrain!  :o

Chad,

It's great to have this on line, thanks for the link!   I think I have some of these in the original, but I am not sure from which source without my books at hand. The ones I have are from von Lettow-Vorbeck's history of the 1866 War and from the Austrian General Staff's official history "Ostereich's Kampfe".  If I recall correctly the latter was produced before the general introduction of contour lines on maps, and therefore relies heavily on the hatching to show slopes.  To my modern eyes this makes the maps look a bit like everything was fought in a particularly bumpy part of the Himalayas, but once you get used to it they can be pretty helpful.  I was lucky enough to be posted in Vienna for a time, and managed to visit most of the Bohemia campaign sites, and they are largely unspolit, and in beautiful countryside.  A pretty fair combination of steepish hills, rolling farm land, and woods.  Reminds me I must go back sometime!

I've struggled with that aspect. I put them into Photoshop and managed to mess around until I got a little better resolution.

Mollinary - No problem. If I recall somewhere on that site there are maps from Moltke's history of the campaign, but I'm damned if I can find them. The interesting thing about them was that they had a scale and were better resollution that those I initially referred to. Maybe it was a different site. :-\

They're amazing. I stumbled on them a few years ago. I got my local branch of Staples to produce a huge enlargement (about 8' x 5' in sections) and used it to model my first Gitchin board.
