Title: My 10mm ACW 150th Project, ongoing thread W/photos
Post by: General Bt Sherman on 17 April 2011, 04:07:19 PM
I began this project back in October with the goal of building armies to refight some of the Civil Wars most famous battles around their Sesquicentennial date.  My original post can be seen here:
http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=1839.0 (http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=1839.0)

It is now April and I still need to paint approximately 650 infantrymen by July in order to refight the battle for Henry House Hill. I will be making weekly updates on my new Blog to track my progress. Also instead of starting a new thread every time I post an update, I will just keep this thread ongoing. If everything goes well I hope to run a game at Fall In this year.

PROJECT UPDATE 04/28/2011
Hello and thank for checking back. This week I began painting a new batch of 240 Confederate Infantrymen. I’m hoping to have this batch complete in a few weeks. Also on my blog I share my technique for painting ragged Confederate Infantry (including a paint chart).

PROJECT UPDATE 08/10/2011

I have a couple of project updates to share. First, the date has finally been set for my Bull Run game. The date is Sunday, September 11th at 11:00 am. I’m hoping by publicly advertizing this game I will attract some new people to join our gaming group. So far I have one non wargamer who is interested in joining the game. So thing are looking good.

Next, my focus has begun to shift to building terrain for this game. I just posted on my Blog an overview of the terrain that I’m currently working on. This includes trees, rivers, and split rail fence. You can view the full post here: http://btsherman.6sided.net/2011/08/10/10mm-terrain-part-1/ (http://btsherman.6sided.net/2011/08/10/10mm-terrain-part-1/)

That's the first time I've seen most of that terrain.  I looks really good.  I've been watching Bryan paint these minis for the last 6 months and they are fantastic!

I'm not sure which side I'm playing but most of my experience is with Napoleonics.  I never played much ACW.  It should be interesting because I figure I'll make the same mistakes that the early ACW generals made in real life when they tried Napoleonic style tactics.

Don’t worry I haven’t ever played a horse and musket game. Yes this is certainly going to be a learning experience. The terrain and the number of troops involved are going to make maneuvering very tight.

Battle of Bull Run Preview
Over the weekend I did a dry run of the Battle of Bull Run game that I’m running this weekend. Below are a couple of images that I took.

Henry House Hill looking North-West. The Henry House is the white building near the center.

Looking South-West.

It took me most of the day to get this table setup. I use almost 25 feet of rail fence and I had just enough trees to cover the table. Overall I’m pretty happy with how the table looks. I can’t wait to fight the battle this weekend.

Very impressive terrain - liked the fencing a great deal

Are you just doing the Union right hook or are you doing the fights/demonstations at the fords as well?

Phase one of my Civil War project has officially come to an end. It took me eleven months to paint the 1500 figures that I needed to game the battle for Henry House Hill. The game went well and I should have some photos from the game posed soon. In the meantime I have some photos of my completed armies. You can see them here: http://btsherman.6sided.net/2011/10/04/american-civil-war-project-phase-1-completed-2/ (http://btsherman.6sided.net/2011/10/04/american-civil-war-project-phase-1-completed-2/)
In the future I’m hoping to at least double the size of these armies but first I need to get some cavalry painted for both sides.

Happy Gaming
Bryan

Those are some VERY pretty toys there old chap.

What rules did you use?  Fire & Fury?  Johnny Reb?

I played the forces of all that is good and right against the godless, commie, South. :)

I won't steal Bryan's thunder but I will say it's going to be a long war.

Dale

I'll post my thoughts after his battle report.

2012
_______________________

2012 is here and its time to begin phase two of my 10mm American Civil War Project. Last year I was able to paint just fewer than 400 bases of infantry (1600 figures), 30 artillery bases and various commanders. My main goal for this year is to double the size of my armies. With that in mind my goals for 2012 are:

1.Paint 200 bases (800 figures) of Union infantry
2.Paint 200 bases (800 Figures) of Confederate infantry
3.Paint 30 bases (90 Figures) of Mounted Confederate Cavalry
4.Paint 30 bases (120 Figures) of dismounted Confederate Cavalry
5.Paint 30 bases (90 Figures) of Mounted Union Cavalry
6.Paint 30 bases (120 Figures) of dismounted Union Cavalry
7.Paint 10 bases (40 figures) of Union Artillery
8.Build/Paint 6’ of entrenchments
9.Game 15 battles from 1862.
These goals are somewhat aggressive and a lot depends on when Pendraken starts to releases their new range of figures. If I can meet or come close to meeting these goals, I will feel like I had a productive year. My plan is to post monthly updates on my progress here, so be sure to check back.

Cool, I'll be keeping an eye on this.  The new ACW's should be hitting the website in the May Releases hopefully, cos I want to take some along to Salute as a preview for folks.

Leon,
No hurry, I have a ton of stuff from the current line that I want to paint before I tear into new stuff.

I must say I admire your single-mindedness, Bryan. Tackling such huge batches must take real determination. Must admit I find one unit at a time as much as I can manage.  #:-S

Bisherman, that' really nice work, like me you're a man who puts as much effort into the terrain as the figures. Can you tell me what the green cloth or drape is, it looks really good.
