Title: 10mm aircrew?
Post by: GrumpyOldMan on 16 March 2011, 12:24:18 AM
Hi

I was looking at some carved wooden 1/144 planes and they looked ok but any with open cockpits such as:-

(http://i.ebayimg.com/04/!B)IMvWgBmk~$(KGrHqIOKj4Ewg)g9yY7BMMLNLMCWQ~~_12.JPG) (http://i.ebayimg.com/11/!B)INc5!BGk~$(KGrHqJ,!jgEv1+0By7pBMMLPFcnmg~~_12.JPG)

didn't have any air crew. Are there any aircrew or tank crew figures out there that could  be used?

I know the planes look a bit crude but there's not much interwar stuff available.

Thanks for any help

Cheers

I think you'd be fine with some of the WW2 tank crew [possibly even cutting down the baled out ones?]

The other figure that springs to mind is the WW1 despatch rider in goggles: cut him down & you've got Biggles...coolio  8)

[you might need to sculpt the trailing silk scarf though  ;)]

Martin Goddard (www.peterpig.co.uk)  Range 6 does a nice line in 1/144 aircrew heads -both pilots and rear gunners - RFC and German types. Its the only non 15mm range that he carries.

No worries mate, its what the Pendraken forum is all about.  And Ian is quite right. Martin has a few lines of odds and sods in eclectic scales, but is in the main a 15mm producer, and a very good one at that.  I really wish for his AK47 range - in particular the AVFs - in good ole 10mm !

So come on Leon, please source us a decent vehicle sculpter. There must be talent out there who will work in 10mm.
Nik's first order alone will pay his wages for a year !

We're trying!  There's a couple of guys working on things at the moment, and we're waiting on a few test pieces from some other sculptors.

Yes Very !!!! :d

Based on the 1 Sherman I have the vehicles look good, although I would question the Cammo'd Sherman with vegitation on the hull. All the photos i've seen show no vegitation on US buses, and the British on Turret only, and only in Normandy. Sand bags - yes, concreate yes, logs, yes, track yes, vegitation no. The US were so confident that many vehicles stayed in OD even in the Ardennes.

This is a very good point that Ian has raised.  Has anyone an image of a US M4 with a cammo net ?    Photos and news reel that I have seen all show late war Shermans with a lot of extra metal on the front plates....things like spare track and boggy wheels and  even wooden logs, in an effort to give more protection.

I don't think its a case that the US tankers were confident in the M4,  As one who has served in COLD WAR  Europe in AFVs. I would make one observation.  Scrim and cammo mean nothing when you are moving.  The smoke, dust and noise of a tank or APC negates any cover from cammo.  A single  Chieftian had only to fire up its multi fuel engine and an entire squadron was compromised.   The only use for cammo was in static overwatch or dug in or, most commonly in leaguer.  The British practice was to carry the nets on the bows of the AFV.  When you stopped you deployed them, supplimented by local veg, and you blended into the landscape( this was the good old days prior to thermal imaging)

QUESTION. As the US was committed to offensive tactics and enjoyed air superiority, was it deemed that cammo was not required ?  Or perhaps without it the commanders hoped  US tankers be more aggressive?

Tactical honesty aside. a bit of cammo makes for a great model !   And good luck Leon with finding a sculptor.
