After painting the Norman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking armies I finally maged to get them on the tabletop for a proper game of Ravenfeast. My gaming buddy and I went with Hastings.

The fyrd and huscarls proved to be very steadfast defending the hill and deployed in shieldeall. This compensated for the inferior abilities of the Wessex fyrd. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, morale tests were taken due to losses and "deaths worthy a song", some units panicked and fled. Bishop Odo fell in battle but William, Harold and other Godwinson brothers survived.
Ultimately both armies suffered their respective break points at the same time after a couple hours of play. We both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the battle "felt" like Hastings. In the end, there was no victor and as night arrived both shattered armies limped from the battlefield. Thanks for the kind words Adam. The lighting plays a bit of a role but as far as painting, I prime black, drybrush light grey and base paint leaving some black in recesses. I go back and hastily add very light or bright highlights over the base colors. There's not much precision.
Once painted, I gloss varnish and let that cure for at least 24 hours. I then give the miniatures a diluted ink wash (usually a mix of medium, AP Strong, AP Dark and a tiny bit of AP Blue). After basing I apply a matte varnish.
I find this provides for some color contrast and gives everything a bit of "pop".
Thanks for the detailed response, I always skip highlights, probably should put the extra effort on!
Dunno why but I think rounded edged bases look a lot better than my square ones, may have to change my basing for my next project ;D
