Title: How regular is slingshot magazine
Post by: Orcs on 26 August 2025, 10:14:13 AM

I am interested to know if anyone has a subscription with "The Society of Ancients".  Particularly regarding the reliability of publication of its magazine Slingshot.

The reason I ask is that I have just cancelled my subscription to the "Pike and Shot Society" after only receiving 2 issues in the 15 months since I joined. When I checked the webpage the volume I was subscribed to started in November 2023. I accept this is a voluntary society, but at an average of 1 issue a year indicated my subscription was projected to be completed in 4 years time.

I sent an email to request what was happening and it was forwarded to the Chairman/editor. After 6 weeks without even an acknowledgement from him I cancelled and have requested a refund.

Hence my enquiry about the Society of ancients, I do not want to get in the same situation, but would like an occasional magazine to read.

Can the hive mind advise me on this?

I've been a member of The Society of Ancients (an increasingly apt description of me) for several years now. The magazine turns up regularly. Would recommend!

I've been a member of SoA for years.
The magazine is bi-monthly and has been very reliable in its publication over the last 5+ years, at least.
It went through a somewhat erratic period in the past, but issues were always produced, even if they were delayed. But under the last few editors both the regularity of delivery and quality of content have improved significantly (IMHO).
There is also a very helpful and insightful forum.
Well worth the subscription.

Thank you all for your help I will be joining the society shortly.

For the record I do not consider myself ancient yet, but I am definitely on the way.  I am sure my Children do think I am ancient, but I intend to carry on until I have spent their inheritance.   ;D

I feel their definitions of the seven ages of man would be thus:-

Years
0- 8  :- Infant: Crying and dependent, mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
9-21  :- Schoolboy: Whining and reluctant to go to school, carrying a satchel.
22-30 :- Lover: Sighing like a furnace, composing ballads for his beloved.(no one over 30 has sex do they? :-& )
31-40 :- Soldier: Full of oaths, bearded, quick to quarrel, seeking fleeting glory.
41-45 :- Justice: With a well-fed belly, formal beard, and dispensing wisdom.
46-50 :-Pantaloon: Lean and frail, wearing spectacles and a pouch, voice becoming childlike.
60-70:- Second Childishness: Losing physical and mental abilities, returning to a childlike state before death. (Lots of wargaming)
70 + :- Completely decrepit - Waiting for you to die so they can get on the housing ladder (I have added this one)

Pah! 70 is the new 30!

And that's my story and I'm sticking to it.  ;D

In reality .... Over 70, still feeling 17 and still acting like I'm 7!

However, you don't look a day under 80.

On the contrary I am frequently told I don't look nearly as old as I am.

I recently had to produce ID to prove my age to get an OAP discount on my haircut.

Just as well they can't see the picture in my attic  :d :d :d :d
