Title: How big is an OS map? How to mount?
Post by: Last Hussar on 08 July 2025, 10:54:42 AM
Hi all,

Quick question - how big (in actual cms) is an OS 1:50,000 map.  In my head I have 80cm square, is that right?

I have 3 (Chiltern Hills North West and East) that I want to mount on the wall as one big map. What would you use as mounting - I don't want to stick straight to the wall? I was considering mounting board, by a friend said no.

Go to a big DIY store (like B&Q in the UK) and get them to cut you a single large, or 3 small pieces of thin MDF board, that will fit together.

Then stick the maps to that with a thorough coating of thinned PVA glue.

You can then attach 'mirror plate' fastenings to the top back edge of the board(s) (with stronger glue - Gorilla Glue or preferably mixed Araldite) that can then be screwed to the wall.

NB: I think that you can also get wipe-down versions of OS Maps, that you can write on with wipeable marker pens.

Just a thought.

I think MDF is what I was told. Might pop down after work (depending on traffic) I will need approx 2m x 2m won't I - when laid out all they are basically in inverted T.

I have the covered versions, which I actually use for walking.

1:10000 are 89 x 98, with borders and key, 79 x 78 without, but watch out, a lot are double sided.

These are 1:50k, not double-sided

Haven't got any of those to hand, so hence the 1:10000

Landranger 95 1:50,000 = 100cm wide by 89cm tall including scale, key, lat long etc.
The land area covered is 40km square; so indeed 80cm x 80 cm.
Some maps have small extensions beyond this (the IoM sheet for example extends 2cm south of the border to include the Calf of Man)

I've ended up buying mounting board, as actually the cheapest and most lightweight option.

The idea is to trim to the grid on the outside,  but as I have three,  I am planning on overlap, so one large map. The reason not sticking straight to wall is decorating and or I might move.

If I remember, 1:50000 often have overlaps, as mentioned, so you will lose some width.

Yes, I've taken that into account.

Now trying to decide how to join them together

I would have thouht a sheet of hardboard cut to the right size would have been easier, and just as easy to hang.

Command fixings do a velcro picture hanging pack

Plan is to go down B&Q later and get that wide tape - I think it's for fixing carpets.

The other problem is still hanging on the wall. I'm moving away from the mirror plate fixings because of it being mounting board. As I type I'm thinking they do some sort of "velcro" stuff for pictures, don't they?

Plan is to put the boards on wall, then wallpaper paste the maps to the boards.  (For clarity, I was always going to trim the map sheets so the joins/overlaps match, but leave the grid refs on the parts in open/not trimmed.)

Yes these are the things you want.

Use as many as needed to hold the weight

As you are the 2nd recommendation for these, I'm off to B&Q this evening.
