Title: Field Defences and Deployment Zones
Post by: richafricanus on 21 June 2025, 07:27:34 AM
Can defenders place field defences like mine fields, gun pits and trenches outside their deployment zone?  We've been playing they can but it suddenly occurred to us this may be incorrect.

I couldn't see any history of this being discussed previously on the forum so hopefully not going over old ground.  :)

If you are not playing a scenario (which might state differently) or a specific historical battle (that allows you to do otherwise) then you cannot deploy field defenses, gun pits, trenches, minefields etc. outside your deployment zone.

It's a game play thing, as otherwise you could, in theory, just deploy a load of minefields along your opponents table edge, which is a bit cheesy to say the least.
You could play it that the defender can deploy field defenses etc. up to 2/3rds of the way across the table, but it's such a big advantage and is a deviation from the intention of the rules  :)

In a series of campaign games, you might withdraw from an area of ground, leaving behind old field defenses etc. and in that situation, then old field fortifications might remain in place, and act as a good objective to be retaken, but that's really a very specific situation.

Cheers
Mark

We play BKC and CWC. In both we allow the defender to deploy minefields along the edge of their deployment zone i.e. up to 10cm outside the deployment zone and no further forward.

That sounds like a sensible approach  :)
