Last week's Sabresquadron scrap in 10mm. My Timecast Soviets Vs Nick's Black Horse Cav

What are your thoughts on Sabre Squadron? When they were released I remember hearing good things about them but I also heard they are a bit complicated (which is not a good pairing with my generally poor rules comprehension).
I play against the guy who wrote them, so I am biased +Hi Nick).
They are really detailed at the first look, but once you get your head into the numbers a few times, actually they are fairly simple (e.g. Hits are saying, 5/10 on a d10, modified by factors, range, cover,if you hit, roll to see whether they are hit or you hit the hill they are hull down behind, then you see how well you beat your to hit by, and this effects the enemy armour save, they roll, you apply smoke to their figure) but when we play we just bring the stats for the units we are using, rather than having to look through the whole list of characteristics. So I only needed T64, BMP and Shakila. Infantry and grande stats, artillery factors, done.
I've just downloaded 'Rapid Deployment' (v1.1), which was/is the 'light' version of SS, as my son wants to play moderns this Saturday. How much like current SS is it?
It's pretty good.
We found the key issue in our play of Sabre Squadron was that hit more often than not equaled kill on MBTs. The designer explained that this was because of the short ranges that the game table represents, but it just didn't make for a fun game for our group.
