Title: Missing FAC ?
Post by: Amra on 30 April 2025, 04:16:30 AM
Hi All ,
The Finns get 2 FAOs but no FAC. Since they have air off-table support I'm assuming a typo but which CV is correct? The 2 FAOs are CV7 and CV8...

If no FAC is shown in the list, then they can only use scheduled strikes, on a pre-designated target point in a particular Turn, again pre-planned. So you would need to buy the air attack from the available assets in the list. Hope this makes sense, as I don't have the rulebook to hand...

No armies had them except:
Germany 1940-1944 at Brigade level
Britain & Commonwealth: ~Oct 1942-1945 initially at divisional level, down to battlegroup level by 1944 on some occasions (so called Tentacles)
America: 1943-1945 regiment and Combat Command levels, and like the British not really effective until 1944.
USMC Angelico teams in the Pacific, which could also call in naval fire support, again from 1944 roughly.

Even by the Georgia war in 2008, the Russians didn't have them. Although I have a vague memory that they may have successfully developed some effective FAC in the last few months of the war, but I'm not sure on that one. The Soviets did have air force liaison officers at divisional level from about 1944 through the Cold War, but these did liaison, not control. In gaming terms that means the air force might tell your army types when a scheduled airstrike is due, hinting about getting any troops out of the way, and if you had the temerity to suggest an air strike they might pass it on up the chain.

For most nations, aircraft were simply too valuable to have them loitering about waiting for a radio message from a random army HQ. Virtually all air missions were and are pre-planned strikes. Germans in the Blitzkrieg and Allies in NW Europe in 1944-45 are more of an exception than a norm.
