Hot on the heels of our big ACW expansion we're continuing in the same period with a big release for our Plains War range. We've added the essential 7th Cavalry in various options, as well as casualties and some personalities, including Custer himself!
With the added items like civilians, wagons and a stagecoach from our ACW range, you've got everything you need for games like Pony Wars.

So cool! 8)
Cool
I'm probably too influenced by Hollywood to know what is correct - but I'm surprised to see some figures in what look like bicornes? My expectation is much more the 'cowboy hat' as shown in the drawing at the top of the post.
Yes, I was surprised by what look like bicornes.
I wonder if they are supposed to be large brimmed Stetsons with the brims folded back? I've seen these with one side of the brim or front turned up but the crowns are wider.
I've seen pill box hats copied off the Brits for officers, kepis, Stetsons, fur caps like trappers hats. Never seen a bicorne on a 7th cavalryman. Maybe I've led too sheltered a life?
I think the nearest thing I've seen (and I don't know exactly when this photo was taken) is this
(https://civilwartalk.com/attachments/1732677799222-png.530009/)
That headgear looks very bicorne like!
It does doesn't it?
It is from Weird Hats of the Civil War (https://civilwartalk.com/threads/weird-hats-of-the-civil-war.213266/)
but in a post talking about post Civil War hats.
Having done a bit more digging the larger version is
(https://truewestmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/hats.jpg).
The caption states that Benteen wore this campaign hat on his 1874 Black Hills expedition - but doesn't actually say this is a photo of that expedition.
Are they actually 'bicornes' or Stetsons (or other big floppy brimmed hats)tortured into this shape? I don't know of any suggestion that bicornes are to be worn, but then most of the other hats worn are 'wrong' as well!
Troopers often bought their own hats in preference to the forage kepi. A photo of some of the men from Wounded Knee nearly all wear fur caps like a Ushanka.
Interesting. (or maybe not! :D )
(Edit - I see the Benteen figure in the range is wearing something like this).
They pinned Hardie hats up, looks kinda tricornish
A bit, but the Hardee (Model 1858 dress hat)has a rigid blocked crown (maybe not so rigid after a year or so's campaigning!) and the brim is much narrower than the height of the crown in most cases, so doesn't hide the top of the crown when pinned up.
Whereas this:

although not a bicorne as such, definitely would!
It's certainly an interesting topic! The reference info we had refers to them as a bicorne style hat but I think it is a pinned up Stetson or similar. I've attached one of the pics we got from a friend who helped with this range, showing 7th Cav in the background wearing this style of hat.
As we've got so many cavalry types in the ACW range wearing regular headgear we wanted to use some of the other suitable hat options to make something visually different for these sculpts.
