Unit number #2 for the Zulu Army completed
inGobamakhosi - Benders of kings
In 1879 it was around 4000 strong , so it's been done with just over 200 figures

That is beautiful
The strength of the number! I like the feeling of an irregular mass. Odd numbers and different positioning gives the vibe of a relentless wave. Impressive =D>
USUTHU!
Very impressive.
They look fantastic. :D
Just a couple more then ;)
Looking really good.
That is very impressive indeed.
Shouldn't it read "Farsands of em, Sah"

An interesting mix of shield colours and patterns. Is that based on the regiment or is the shield colour grouping a 'myth'?
Some units had a mix of shield patterns . There had been disease among the royal cattle over several years and some patterns were short of availablity

Takes me to over 650 painted . Only another 350 + to go . All ready to prepare up .
Those are really impressive and the en massé feel is incredible.(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)
And I thought I was a quick painter..
Thanks - they are a pretty simple paint job - no collars and cuffs stuff !
The painting recipe :-
Base coat - Spray Hygrax Brown - by colour Forge
Drybrush a lighter brown - I used Vallejo Flat Earth
Black for the hair
Weapon colour - flat brown for the Knobkerrie and beige brown for the Assagie and spear
Loin cloth a lighter brown/khaki/off white , then a little off white highlight in places
Head dress and leg decorations picked out a lighter colour , off white
Give em a thin brown wash Vallejo sepia over the skin
Metals
Paint shield back a light brown using Tan earth
Paint shield front main colour
Paint shield decoration
Varnish
When based up I do how does the unit look check and do odd highlights etc .
Fabulous mass effect. Promote this cadet immediately.
But why do I keep singing "Men of Harlech" now?
Lovely brushwork Deedles.
As has been observed already the mass basing looks most impressive :-bd

I didn't know there were green uniformed British, are they Rifles? Will be a nice option to add to my forces when I ever get back to it...
Regarding the artillery, I pretty sure these should be grey painted wood, not brown (sorry to be that guy)

Yes its 60th rifles . And yes guns indeed should be grey I pointed that out myself as my Zulu Impi over them 😆
It seems the local clergy have seen the increase in Zulu forced . The de Witts have a warning "You're all going to die!" A little conversion work on the ACW Ambulance added sides from thin card , the driver from the Stagecoach set and female from the ACW civilians
That's brilliant
Nice work - was about to ask which model it was - then read on a bit more!
QuoteYes its 60th rifles . And yes guns indeed should be grey I pointed that out myself as my Zulu Impi over them 😆
Cool, will remember them as an option when (if) I ever get back to this.
If the guns had been grey they would have performed better and held off the Impi...

Can I ask about the basing, I can see small squares, rectangles, and are there large squares too? How do these relate to your rules?

A basic stand at 30x30 is 1 unit for fighting / casualties. A 60x30 is 2 , a 60x60 is 4 . Each unit is made of 2 1's , 4 2's , and multiple 4's depending on unit size . It allows easy casualty removal , formation shapes etc . Zulus are essentially melee troops . On initial melee contact the Zulus fight with the same number of bases as the imperial which are all 30x30. If it goes to a second round the deeper and wider Zulu stands start to fight - unless imperials are in barricades or square .
Holy moly Deedles that is a truly impressive sight! :-bd
I hope Lord Chelmsford's army packed several spare uniforms in thier kitbags. ;)

That is a smart way of dealing with basing for this volume of figures.
Rules make sense, and I suspect once it gets to round 2 and the Zulus get all their extra bases to fight, its game over for the red coats!

Yes indeed . If imperial firepower can kill 1/2 the front stands of a Zulu regiment in a turn the forward movement is stopped until they are urged forward again. Our ranges and movements are large as we are lucky to have very big tables to play on

I've used ones from Commission Figurines which come in a range of depths, sized to fit 4L and 9L RUB, they are a great way of getting a high density of figures in a box.
