Given that it was probably the second or third most deadly conflict in the history of the world, the 14-year-long Taiping Rebellion doesn't get as much attention from us wargamers as it deserves. We took one small step towards rectifying that by fighting the Second Battle of Hukou, using a scenario lovingly researched and created by our Chinese-speaking Hong Kong friend, Jeremy. This produced an entertaining game with its own distinctive shape and flavour. Photo-AAR on the BBBBlog here:

Having delved into it a bit, I agree totally. I do have the Foundry book on the 19th Century Chinese, and the Taiping rebellion (and other associated rebellions around the same time) does present a far greater variety of armies, troop types and terrain than the contemporary ACW. And your European armies can get involved too. Having already got some 28mm colonials in our gaming group, I'm starting Chinese armies from this weekend in 28mm because to wait for 10mm to appear is going to take too long. :(
Cheers, Sultan. Yes, I expect it will generate more very different and interesting games for us. For instance, I think there's one battle where there's a big naval action happening on a major river or lake alongside the land battle. Plenty of fun in store.
That man Jeremy needs to finish painting his own Taiping and Ching armies so we can get a game going in the Hong Kong Club, rather than just reading about the enjoyment being had in foreign parts!

Quite right. If only there were someone else there to motivate him!
