Title: Russian Green in 10mm?
Post by: lekw on 18 January 2025, 08:21:11 PM
Hi all, I am looking at painting some Napoleonic Pendraken Russians and am not sure what to use for the uniform green in 10mm? I know it was a dark green but I don't want to go to dark in 10mm, do not want them looking black?

Thanks for the help all!!!

I would use any old dark green such as those in the Foundry triads like French Dragoons and then highlight sparingly with a lighter shade.

Not sure I want to shade 10mm figures but will give it a try. I may go with this:

Vallejo Model Colors Paint 17 ml/0.57 fl oz Flat Matte, Gloss

Looks kind of correct for 10mm perhaps with a shade? Thanks for the help!!!

Possibly use a GW Contrast Army green. Either on its own or as a wash over another green.

I have just done 14th army in 20mm  and for green troops in unfaded uniform painted them Vallejo US dark green 893, followed by a wash in the GW Army green (wash my mouth out with soap  :) ). then a quick drybrush with the original colour

I'm don't know if things had changed in the degeneracy of the early 19th century, but SYW Russians usually went into action in their bright red jackets, leaving their iconic green coats behind. Inconsiderate of them, of course, but you don't want to dress for mid-winter conditions when it's only September.

Kitty. Russians are green.

End of. I'm not painting 15 different armies just because they changed coats every 24 days.

There seem to be a multiplicity of suggestions for Russian Napoleonic green paint colours. General description is a dark green (probably needing lightening for 10mm figures).

SYW Russians had a green coat that was not worn in summer (but was worn in action in winter).

I'd probably paint them in green coats myself. Maybe that's why I've confined my SYW stuff to Prussians and Austrians, even if I have to explain to some Thai opps that Maria Theresa never had battle kangaroos.

For the Little Wooden Russians (8mm) I just used a green variant of Prussian Blue.

Could depend on base colour on metal 10mm

I used Luftwaffe Camo Green over a black undercoat. Very dark.

I don't like black for undercoat, I find I can't see the folds. Of course it could be the only time I tried that was WSS Prussians, so dark blue over black left me wondering "which bit have I painted?"!
