I've added in a couple of extra characters like the officer with his hand in the air, commanding the archers to loose and the Flamoularioi officer to 'dress the ranks'.
You can see a whole load of extra pics of the unit as a whole and each individual stand from various angles on my blog here:

First, a more or less actual size pic:

I had to check the scale of the figures; I was wondering if they were 40mm
There are some nice vignettes in the unit
I particularly like the slashes on the shields, a really good touch
What are they?
Very nice
Thank you for the very kind words guys :)

They are Early Byzantine/Eastern Roman Empire Extra Heavy Spearmen and Archers- all mini's by Aventine Miniatures.
These are just awesome. I read "The last great war of Antiquity" earlier this year, which is about the Byzantine–Sasanian War of 602–628, and I hard a hard time picturing the armies- are these figures from that period or earlier?

Thank you for the kind words Clibinarium.
These are a wee bit earlier, more Justinian's Invasion of Gothic Italy in terms of time scale.
Sorry, I meant size; from the other post I'm guessing 28mm.

Yup - 28mm.
Aventine have some stunning ranges - their Byzantines and Sassanids are to die for.
My Lord are those nice or what 8) !
My goodness guys- please forgive me- I had not received any notifications for any of the replies so was unaware anyone has replied!
Thank you for all the positive words- they are very encouraging indeed- and very much appreciated :)
I'd missed this before, WoW!!!
