Title: 1812 Saxons
Post by: jamespaintsminis86 on 20 November 2024, 10:08:31 AM
Hi all.

I'm looking to do build a couple of brigades of Saxons for 1812.

I'm not massively knowledgeable about the uniforms of the period but from what I can tell they seem based on the French style of uniform but with Shako cords and tall plumes on the grenadiers.

Does anyone have any suggestions for what ranges I could use.

Welcome on board! Sadly Napoleonics not my thing, but fingers crossed others with the right knowledge will be along to advise you.

I hate jumping into these things because there are so many factors that could affect your choice. Parade ground or campaign? Actual wear or regulation? (e.g. not everyone changed to the 1812 shako on 1st January 1812.) Russia or Spain? It also depends upon how pedantic you want to be.)

The Saxons adopted French style uniforms in 1810.I would (IMHO) base on the French 1809 range.

From a quick 'Bing' images search it looks like French Legere are a good fit - it seems to come down to plume rather than pom-pom.

IF (!) I remember when I will look at the pics in my Funcken and see if I can give better advice.

Thanks for the warm welcome to the forum. I will have to go to the intros and introduce myself properly at some point.

FNS and Last Hussar I appreciate the advice. Your suggestions are along the same tracks as I was thinking so it's good to know I'm not to far out. I also thought the 1809 young guard might work with a bit of adaptation of the plumes and removing the epaulettes?

How wedded are you to the plumes? They come off the shako.

My big book of the Saxon Army (by three German gentlemen)* shows big plumes on grenadiers, but most troops having not much more than a pom-pom. I think the French range may be the best fit, differentiated by a paint job.

I'm not overly invested in the plumes. Although It would be nice on a grenadier battalion. I think the french range is definitely the way forward.

Going to have to keep an eye out for the book you mentioned.
