Title: Olympics 2024
Post by: Last Hussar on 27 July 2024, 04:36:41 PM
Thought we needed a thread for the current games.

Just watching the Judo. Even though the French bloke lost, you had to love the fact that the crown broke out into the
Marseillaise during the Final.

Would you like me to change that, LH ? ;)

I SO hate predictive spelling, and the way it sneaks the wrong word in. >:(

A pity our cycling chap suffered a puncture.
He missed a podium by 2 seconds.

I was disappointed that the refs ruined the 3rd place game and final of the Rugby 7s with over officiousness.
The game is supposed to flow, not be interrupted every minute because of imagined technical infringements.

That aside, there were some cracking games.
Congratulations to the organisers for scheduling more than horses and swimming during week 1.

Look, I don't want to come across as rude - this isn't the "Other Place" - but as the thread is titled Olympics, it really isn't the place to come if you don't like the Olympics.

Sorry, I am trying to be polite.

I don't watch the Olympics so this thread is my sole source of news on the subject. Keep it up lads.

We watched the Simone Biles highlights of her 4 routines, which were just incredible :o ! She really is the GOAT and from what we saw, no-one is close to her in terms of her performances and difficulty scores. Let's see what the finals bring...

I (mostly) enjoy the Olympics. It's only every 4 years, and it's a chance to see things that are not normally shown.

Over the last few days I've seen:

There are a few sports that really shouldn't be there though.

To me the Olympics should be the peak, or close to it, of success in that sport. Is that true for football? Or golf? Or tennis? Clearly not. There are probably others like that (Road cycling?)

There are also "sports" that are clearly not sports. Doing tricks is not a sport (at least not to me). So BMX freestyle, skateboarding and "breaking" (break dancing to you & me) hold no interest. I notice they're all fairly new additions, and presumably have been included to try and interest the yoof of today.

And any "sport" that includes judges giving a score for "Artistic Expression" or something similar, and/or requires music is clearly more "Strictly" or "Eurovision" than an actual sport.

Beach volleyball is reprehensible for having a dress code that defines the skimpiness of the costumes.

I also have no interest in any sport that involves animals.

The things I do want to watch are the track cycling, triathlons, marathons and the track athletics. Anything else I see is a bonus.

Clare Balding is surely the most condescending presenter the BBC have ever come up with.

Well done to the Brits who won the mountain biking, trap shooting and the triathlon.

Sorry for the ramble.

I  agree with Raider that many of the so called "Sports" are not. I also do not like to see women knocking 7 bells out of each other in the various forms of "Boxing"

The other thing that irritated me is that in the archery, a proper Olympic sport, the bows have all sorts of counter weights, pulley systems etc. We need to get rid of this.

Aye, needs to be replaced with a simple bow, and the target is replaced by a shieldwall of hairy men wielding swords, spears & axes advancing rapidly towards the shooter.

Pistol shooting should be a Dirty Harry/Magnum Force-style shooting range, with .44 Magnums. Much more impressive.

That is so appealing on many levels (but so wrong) ;D

We could have an mounted archery competition with a recurve bow, and use the Chinese as targets. no doubt the Mongolian team would win.

Sensibilities may have changed over the century or so since the 1900 Paris games when live pigeon shooting figured.
There was also a running game event, but I don't know what the targets were there!

It's what I do.

To be fair I don't like any of it and so watch none of it. :)

Well the women's gymnastics has been great and you just have to be in awe of what Simone Biles can do on the floor, ditto the vault. SWMBO has got into the boxing and judo, with the women's volleyball producing some great matches. Having played volleyball many moons ago, I can really appreciate what is going on.

I would suggest the following reasons:
1 None of the events used full bore weapons. Americans consider air pistols and rifles and .22 rimfire rifles as kids toys.
2 Just because you own several does not necessarily mean you know how to handle them properly.
3 Having been a shooter for 40 years there is a big difference between shooting things that react, eg Tin cans, bottles, live targets when hunting etc, and a paper target in a competition.

'They' have a number of sports that go back to 'ancient times'...archery, catching the javelin, the discus, etc, etc..

I'd like to see a new category...the slingshot.
It looks a particularly difficult skill to master.

Would it be possible to modernise a piece of string, and a stone ?..

Probably ! ;)

Firing perfectly balanced, aerodynamically perfect, nano-material bullets.

Words change.

150 years ago 'obnoxious' meant something completely different (dangerous, I think).
