I have started running my serenity/firefly roleplay game.
SO far the team have sold a herd of cows and associated by-products, heard about an escaped lunatic (possibly the survivor of a reaver attack, not that they exist of course), heard about various grusome murders, heard a bout a young man, whos new wife has run off to Athens, escorted a young lady to town, stopped a bank robbery, lost the young lady whilst sopping the robbery
Fear not readers it would seem the young lady was possibly kidnapped and was last seen getting on a train heading North (into the mountains)
Our brave crew quickly lifted off and gave chase. a quick fly along the side of the train at 180mph and then over the top and back down the other allowed them to spot the young lady.
A plan was quickly hatched to drop Alice onto the top of the train and he would investigate the situation. He quickly found the kidnapper in question. Shepherd Bell was also dropped onto the train and made her way along to have a chat with the young lady.
SHe persuaded her to leave via the hoist onto the roof at which point she froze. the captain dropped back until the ship's door was hovering over the spot where the young lady lay clinging on like a limpet. Toad assisted her onto the vessel and the door shut just as the train rounded a bend and the tunnel appeared. Some super flying meant the ship shot upwards and over the top of the mountains.
As they lost comms, Alice decided they needed a chat with the kidnapper and a punch up began  :D
He then dragged the unconscious man through the train an under the open hatch. a few minutes later as they came out into the open, the ship appeared and the man was hoisted aboard the Jo-Lyn.
A few chats later the young the lady was returned home and the kidnapper dropped off near home, he had admitted to the crew that he was using the killings and attacks to cover the theft of his neighbours cattle and sell them in Greenwater.
The crew then went to investigate the killings near Dry Gulch, they arrived after dark, landed and headed towards the town, which was all in darkness and eerily silent.
Seconds later a bullet ricocheted near their feet. the muzzle flash coming from the darkened buildings.
Once the towns folk had ascertained that they were not intent on pillage, they were allowed in to hear the stories of the attacks and the mysterious rancher who had been living beyond his means, when they informed the townsfolk that the same gentleman had admitted stealing cattle a number of men melted away, only stopping to get a rope and their weapons as they left. Moments later the sounds of receding hoof beats were heard.
The crew headed back to the ship only to realise that they were being trailed by something in the darkness. it leapt straight at the captain who was borneto the ground by its massive weight, luckily ALice was there to help and killed the massive dog. Shakily they returned to their ship, locked it down and returned with a mule to pick up the dog. None of the townsfolk had ever seen or heard of a dog of this size, speculation then occurred as to whether the animals and people killed over the past few months were caused by the massive animal.
Unfortunately we will have to wait until next week to find out where their investigations lead them
Excellent stuff Maenoferren...are you using the Serenity / Firefly RPG for this? I got a copy in the Haitian Relief bundle from RPGnow agesa ago - and single-handedly have failed to give it a proper read-through...might just have to correct that :)
Using any figures? It'd be very coolio to see this in 10mm...hmm...
HI Nik, guess the system I am using lol
we are using 10mm figs on and off, but as it was a rush game I hadnt got round to painting them yet :D
Sounds like great fun Maenoferren - you'll have to keep us up-dated.
Cheers,
Kev
Firefly always felt like watching a game of Traveller to me.
For me that's a good thing :-[
THanks for the comments guys :D
We are playing again tomorrow so will let you knw what happens then.... basically they are going to be in some deep do do's ;D ;D ;D

Hi Luddite, there is a spare seat at the table if you are interested :D
I must admit there was definately a few moments of Da shiong la se la ch'wohn tian, especially when the big scary things jumped out ;D
HI Nik... how did you guess :D :D :D
When I Have calmed down from this competition, I will write up this evenings escepades, which involved exhuming bodies, chasing space craft, investigating fires and shooting dogs
Sounds great - looking forward to reading it 8)
Wow I really enjoyed that Maenoferren.
I`m a huge fan of Firefly and its great to see something so cool based on it.
Thank you :)
Cheers six, hopefully I will get to write up Mondays game tonight
Well we are back safely in Dry Gulch
After a returning to the town with the large and very dead dog, the team were invited to a dance. They willingly agreed and off they went with the captain making his way to the groaning tables of food, the engineer hunting out jugs of home made lemonade, the shepherd teaching the locals some very interesting dance moves which seemed to require a pole? As for Alice, he chased anything in a skirt. The team very soon got round to discussing what to do in the morn.
Obviously if it was Reavers they would need to see some bodies. A quick chat with the mayor of Dry Gulch informed them that there was one body interred in the town's cemetery, the rest of the deceased were buried near their ranches. The young man buried in Dry Gulch was travelling to the outlying ranches when he was killed. They then decided that the only way to be sure was an exhumation, they cleared this with the mayor and all agreed to do the deed in the morning when it was light.
As people made their way out of the dance hall, the characters realised that the hall had an inner door which kept light in, a walk across to their lodging house meant they were outside when some form of craft flew across, without running lights, and some form of mis-firing engine. They watched it travel across the lake and disappear beyond the mountains, They wondered whether the Reavers were back, they couldn’t tell what kind of ship it was, but a superb roll from the engineer meant they could tell that the port engine was the one that wasn’t working properly.
In the guest house they again noticed blackout curtains, armoured doors and windows barred, as was the chimney. This guest house could withstand a siege.
More biscuits, fried chicken, lemonade and coffee later, they got to question the landlady, she was able to tell how the only survivor was from the James ranch, young Jesse was found tied to a tree surrounded by the mutilated bodies of some 40 of the 45 ranch hands and family that lived there, 5 were never found. His mind was gone “poor boy†he wouldn't speak and sat curled up rocking backwards and forwards. He was brought back into town for his own safety. A few night later he disappeared, the following night a rancher from out of town was found mutilated, Poor Jesse hasn't been seen since. However the trail of murders continued around the lake. People were found part eaten, both inside and outside their houses. The conclusion the folks in Dry Gulch came to was Reavers.
The next morning dawned without any gruesome murders, Reaver attacks, mad dogs and irate fathers (well Alice was in town). So all the weaponry they had surrounding them wasn’t required.
The mayor and undertaker arrived after a hearty breakfast. The mayor informed the characters that a huge fire had been seen in the mountains about three hours after they said they had seen the craft fly over.
However one task at a time.
They all made their way into the graveyard, where a canvas screen had been erected and a chuck wagon available for an impromptu morgue. A couple of hours of digging got the body out and onto the slab. He had been severely mauled by something. The shepherd measured bite marks and lacerations, but they weren't human. Possibly a bear or some form of big cat? Alice was sent to get the dog for comparison. He decided the head was easier than the whole body, so chopped it off and took it to the shepherd. A quick measurement of the teeth showed that the creature that mauled the person was not this dog, but the teeth marks were similar to those on the body. The Shepherd then went and had another look at the body, on closer inspection she found that the body also had cut marks on the forearms, had the person been cut to attract a wild animal?
The crew then decided they would need to go and have a look at the other ranches and check those bodies, to see if they had human bites or animal bites.
So far they had decided the following:
Someone was for some reason making it looked like the area was being attacked by Reavers, but for what reason? Mineral rights under the area? Make people sell cheap? They had decided however that until proved otherwise they believed that Reavers had nothing to do with it.
They asked the Mayor if the ranchers who left during the night were back, but with the distance travelled they wouldn’t be back until the evening until the earliest.
Jo Lyn lifted off to investigate the other ranches, but on the way they decided to take a detour to the mountains and see if they could find the source of the fire, possibly a crashed ship. The search located a burn area some 30 feet across, a whole area had been denuded of anything burnable and it would seem that someone had lit a massive fire, but a quick check showed that the fire was located so that its light would be reflected off a cliff face studded with mica, which would reflect nicely along the valley and out over the lake. A quick search located only one set of footprints, who had lit the fire and why was it lit, they couldn't decide on this so decided they would keep an eye on the area and set off to locate the graves in the destroyed ranches.
As a precaution they climbed to about 5000 feet as they headed south towards the James ranch they noticed half a dozen riderless horses grazing. They dropped low and landed about a mile away. They took the mule and headed towards the horses, not far a way they found the remains of the riders, tied to trees and mutilated beyond recognition, some had been partially eaten too. A quick check showed similar evidence to the body in town. As the shepherd was checking the last in the line, she realised that this one was still alive. He was rushed to the ship and put straight into the med lab. He was badly wounded and on the verge of death. The shepherd managed to stabilise him and waited while the drugs took effect.
The rest of the crew took the opportunity to drive the remaining 5 miles to the James farm. They arrived to find the place a wreck.
The bunk house was partially burned down, the doors and shutters hung on their hinges. A search of the are came up with the following. A large number of rounds had been fired from outside the buildings, the buildings were pockmarked with bullet holes (Reavers didn't use guns did they?) the Bunkhouse was partially burned down. It had one door and this was the area burned. Crude, rusty and blood stained weapons were also located, dropped almost as if they were expected to be found?
As they were doing their search the man on the ship suddenly sat bolt upright, The shepherd rushed to his side, large syringe of sedatives in her hands (just in case) he grabbed her shoulder and tried to tell her something...
“They came out of the.......(much gurgling) and then even with the best efforts of the shepherd, he unfortunately passed away.
The shepherd contacted the rest of the crew to warn them that 'they came from the lake' (where she got that from nobody knows!!)
Therefore as the James ranch was near the lake Alice kept watch on a nearby hillock with 'Thelma' his favourite weapon, Toad (the engineer) dug the holes and the captain kept watch, whilst eating his stash of fried chicken. A couple of hours later, with the help of Alice the bodies were exhumed and returned to the Jo-Lyn. One had definite bullet damage and the other although partially eaten had tell tale cut marks. Putting it all together, this wasn’t Reavers, it was too well planned, use of firearms, the people were attacked by animals, and not canibalised.
As the light was beginning to fall, they decided to return with the bodies of the people from the town and come up with a cunning plan to see if they could entrap whoever was doing the killing. They radioed ahead to say to the mayor they were inbound and that they had the mortal remains of the townsfolk.
As they landed they took the mayor aside and asked if there was an empty house they could use to attract the killers, they mayor was not happy with this and suggested they use old widow Jones' place a couple of miles north of the town. Their initial idea was to barricade themselves in the house and attract the killers by showing lights and setting the fire to smoke, instead they decided to sit in their ship and keep a watch above in case the mysterious craft flew over again. At around 3am sure enough passive sensors picked up a craft at around 10, 000 feet on the same heading as the one the night before. A quick scramble and the soon caught up with the mysterious craft. This one was however broadcasting an IFF beacon. A quick chat with the captain of the vessel proved it was a Poisson rouge as toad so elegantly put it.
As they were heading back towards town, they decided to pay a visit to Mr Michael Hunt, the kidnapper, however they noticed a light leaking out from the house doorway. They made a wide circuit and then headed back again on the same heading as the craft the night before and at the same rough altitude, as expected they crossed the Hunt ranch, and sure enough the light was still shining.
They landed a couple of miles away and waited a couple of hours to see if anyone came a calling.
As they didnt they loaded the mule up with as much weaponry as was humanly possible. Alice and the captain wore the ships night vision goggles as they headed towards the ranch. As they got about half a mile out something very large galloped across in front of them, just on the range of the captain's night vision goggles. It wasn't a horse or a cow, it looked more like a very, very large dog.
They got to the ranch without any upset, and the light was still shining. MR Hunt didn't seem worried about Reavers!
As they burst into the main house guns drawn they found it empty. Food and drink still on the table! A search of a storm cellar by the captain and Alice found a whole chest of money and bills of sale for a large number of cattle. They decided that they might need to look after at least some of the loot, just in case it was stolen, but thought they had better not tell the shepherd of their plan, just in case she saw a flaw in the plan.
The rest of the house was empty. Toad and the shepherd stayed in the main house, whilst the captain and Alice searched the out buildings and barn. A search of the barn found a number of cattle hanging up, inexpertly butchered, offal and chunks of meet filled large plastic bins. Somebody seemed to be feeding something large with meet judging by the amount in the bins.
As they moved across to the bunk house, they heard heavy breathing coming from within. On the count of three and a nod they yanked the door open, weapons at the ready. A huge dog leapt to its feet and launched itself at the cage within. They checked the room and found 10 cages 6 held massive dogs, 4 however were empty. A quick check showed that various levers operated the cage doors so that one person could let the animals out one at a time or all at once. It seemed that they had located the place where the dogs came from.
They went back into the house, using the secret knock, collected all the drugs in the shepherds medical bag, luckily there was enough to drug the remaining dogs. After they were all asleep they were shot (One wonders why they bothered drugging them in the first place???)
deciding nothing more could be done that night, they heard a long howl from somewhere nearby.
Making their way quickly way back to the house, a huge dog loped towards them. It got within yards before dying under a hail of lead.
As they barricaded themselves in for the night, Alice took a look out the window using the starlight scope on Thelma. About 200 yards out lay a body. The crew decided it was too dangerous to check in the dark.
Next week we will find out who it is and what happened to him
Excellent stuff Maenoferren. I'm looking forward to the next installment already :D
Cheers,
Kev
Cheers for the comments guys, next week, gunfights, dogs and a meeting with a reaver?
Good read, although I am not familiar with the ruleset or the setting just yet. Is it a SciFi Western setting? and what's with the Chinese?
I'll have to have a hard look at it. Found the website and it looks cool!

Its too much. I can't cope with the overwhelming lovely... :x :x :x
I can see how I come to love Kaylee at least! :D
The nude dude's hiney was a surprise as well, but with a plus: the Mrs. always complains about not enough male nudity on TV, and she's always happy to see a nice pair of firm stud buttocks :P
Just the best shot ever!
You used to be able to download wallpaper of it from her own website too... Not checked for a while... ;)
Damn I really wantt o watch Serenity now, but my daughter is playing Mario Cart on the Wii!!
send her to bed, or other parental thing :D
When we last left our heroic crew, they were holed up in Mr Hunt's ranch house after spotting a body at around 200 yards.
This wee we started off with the plan to go out in the dark and see who the body belonged to.
Alice dragged a table up against the window and set up his high powered rifle and the captain bravely stepped out into the dark. Toad was asked to sort through the bills of sale and money in the cellar and shepherd Bell was asked to get all of her medical equipment ready, get water on the boil etc.
As the captain moved out into the darkness Alice spotted a large shape in some bushes. He radioed this info to the captain who also spotted the shape. He took the safety off his shotgun but kept on going
he got to the body and tried to ascertain who it was, the Green of the image intensifier goggles made this difficult, but it did look like the late Mr Hunt. As the captain was searching the pockets the large animal made it's move. With an angry roar it leapt forwards. Alice fired and hit true, but the round made no impact. The captain made a tactical withdrawal towards Alice who kept firing and doing absolutely no damage at all. The huge animal kept coming, to within range of the captain's shotgun which was put to good use, but again no damage. Eventually the giant bear fell 9 yards away from the captain, who then made his way back into the house for some fried chicken, coffee and a change of underwear. Mr Hunt had been part eaten, it looked like one of his own dogs had got him, but whether he had been cut, or shot like the others would have to wait until morning.
At about an hour before sunrise Alice noticed a vehicle using infra red headlights approaching from the rear. I turned just at maximum range of his night vision goggles. Basically if he hadn't been ex-military then he would never have noticed. This was some form of covert insertion. Everyone readied themselves for an assault. A few minutes later, they were asked to lay down their arms and come out eith their hands up. The captain pointed out that there were some big dogs out there. A voice calmly replied that they new that and they had the situation under control. The shepherd went out to negotiate and was fired upon, either they all came out or nobody came out.
Toad came up from the cellar and looked around the cabin and set to work making a compressed air mortar that fired tin cans filled with ground pepper. (well he does have the MacGyver edge)
Nobody thought to look out the front windows for quite a while, luckily they spotted the insurgents as they moved forwards.
Alice carefully took aim and his high powered compressed air weapon spat and down went his target with no sound at all. Two casualties later the bad guys realised something was amiss and the remaining 13 opened fire. Luckily the house had strong shutters and a barred door so no one was hurt. Eventually however, the numbers attacking meant that the gunfight got to close range. The pepper mortar was used and worked perfectly, however it seemed to do no damage. Rifles and shotguns were poked through the damaged shutters and characters were hit at point blank range, however with numerous bennies still held all wounds were soaked.
The remaining few attackers made a fighting withdrawal. And were very quickly cut down. Shepherd bell having just had her bible shot lost her temper and belted one of the bad guys with a shovel full of hot coals.
Toad yanked open the door and gave chase after the remaining baddy. He was just rounding the corner of the barn when he heard snarling and a horrendous scream. He turned the corner and fired at the huge dog ripping the man to shreds. The dog looked up, blood dripping from its snout and charged. Toad fired a couple more times but did no damage. Just as the dog was about to make its final leap, the shepherd arrived with her shovel and set about the dog.
Toad fired and shook the dog, the shepherd wound herself up and let rip. With a mighty swing the shovel struck the dog full under the chin, snapping it's mighty neck.
They all locked themselves into the house again and reloaded. Sure enough they noticed another vehicle at the extreme range of the night vision equipment. Something seemed to come out of the back, something big on four legs. Another search of the dog cages showed a ladder into a loft with a large speaker and something akin to a cd player. They switched it on and it seemed like nothing happened apart from the needle on the machine flickering wildly. Moments later a howling was heard, getting closer and closer. Within minutes the huge dog had returned to its cage and was locked in from the switches in the loft.
The dog was despatched and as sunlight arrived they searched the bodies, each of the attackers was wearing or carrying a grotesque mask, which in the dark would look just like something like a reaver would look like.
As they got back to the Jo Lyn they found footprints all around the ship. A quick search found a grenade attached to a block of plastic explosives inserted in the engine intake. Anyone trying to take off with it in situ would have led to a catastrophic explosion.
Next week they get to meet a reaver :)
Top-notch M - great episode :)
Cheers Nik.
I need a large, rotund colonel Saunders for the captain, might have to look at the ACW selection for him :) (he ended up beig an arab gentleman on Monday night :)
Another great episode Maenoferren! Things are hotting up!
Thanks for keeping us along for the ride 8)

Over the weekend I didn't get a lot of stuff done coz I just watched the entire firefly series and to top it off the Serenity movie. Absolutely brilliant stuff, talk about a revelation, I've enjoyed it tremenduously. Not to mention the four hot ladies that star the show, excellent stuff! I'm a believer now 8)
I can see how that would be great fun to create some games in, be it in a rpg fashion or just some frantic reaver skirmishing!
Thanks for the tip guys!

Better call him Kaliph Saun-Dir then :D
Seriously, I'm liking the idea of setting up a bit of game in this universe more by the minute. Are there any specific sourcebooks available? Spaceships, planets, Alliance info, independent civilisations, etc? What do you use for reavers? Maybe we need to start a new thread here :P
Great isn't it, all this talk about it has led to me really wanting to see it again, so...
I watched the first 7 episodes whilst doing teh ironing yesterday! Yes that was a GORAM pile of ironing, but at the end I felt like I worked in Janes's Town!
Glad you are enjoying it guys...got more to write up from last weeks game.
Reavers - they are a myth, the boogeyman to scare kids :D

some ideas here
various maps online I got some good free ones, but can't remember where from...blew them up to A3 for the players.
Ships - I use the following:
http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=19929&it=1 this is the players ship (the Jo-Lyn) I bought about 5 different sets for different craft.
Basically I make up the storyline as I go along... I have the RPG book and a set of adventures which I probably wont use, as knowing what my players are like they will do something so wierd that it will change totally They will meet the crew of Serenity somewhere and somehow :D :D :D I keep watching the series especially when I head to the mainland.
The storyliine is sort of set for the next few sessions. I know what I want them to do, whether they will do it is anyones guess. But if all else fails a distress beacon will be heard, or armed gunmen will appear if things are getting a bit slow ;D ;D ;D Oh and they are about to lose just about all of their hard earned money, can have them rich enough to avoid having to take the jobs I want them too

I found some goodies yesterday night, including film scripts for serenity, the original and the XL version where Wash lives, the script for a new movie, the map of the verse, the verse in numbers, a maniacal attempt at putting the firefly universe in numbers - very impressive and some firefly comic books in avi format, desktops...
I can't seem to relocate the link though, I'll have to check this evening on my home PC'S history. I think it's all bona fide, site says it came of the cantstopthesignal.com site, which now loads universal pictures, so it seems official enough.
Also found a site with ships and stuff. What rules does everyone use to play this? Flying Lead? I know there is another ruleset that works well for this mix of sci-fi and hack and slay, but I forgot the name, it's kind of a western book cover...
GZG do a 'glowworm' space ship, I have one painted for our Starship game we wrote (Wargames Unlimited) a few years back. I'll have to see if I can dig out the photo..
Yep, there she is...

Yup, that looks close enough :D What scale is that?
It's listed under cargo, think they're 1:2400, or not in this case! Think the boys were just having fun...
I eventually managed to write up the last game :-[
Heading back into town the crew radioed ahead and got the sheriff and mayor to organise a burial detail, which were standing by when the Jo Lyn landed. The evidence that they had collected was taken into town and showed to them.
The crew and passengers returned to the Hunt Ranch and set about burying the rather large number of dead. One body, was, however missing. Michael Hunt's body was gone. A search of the surrounding area showed that some form of vehicle had been present and had headed up into the hills. The crew left the burial detail and followed the tracks. They eventually came to a scorched area where some form of craft had taken off. This trail had evidently gone cold.
When they returned to the cabin they returned inside and noticed a letter on the mantle, a quick read showed that Mr Hunt's brother Robert would be arriving in the future. A quick chat with the Mayor told them that he thought he remembered Michael Hunt sending a telegram to a relation in the South, but couldn't rightly remember if it was a brother. 15 bodies and 6 huge dogs was taking a lot of burying, so the mayor asked the crew if they would return to Dry Gulch and bring back a mechanised digger.
The captain and Toad headed back across the lake and located the vehicle in question, as they were loading it aboard the ship a clerk from the rail road arrived to say that a Mr Hunt was asking the direction of his brother's ranch. The captain kindly offered to fly him across but also felt the need to give him the bad news and all the gory details. Evidently Michael Hunt and Robert hunt were twins, because this man looked the spitting image of his now deceased and missing brother.
On the flight across the captain ordered Toad to 'keep Mr Hunt company'. This didn’t please Toad as he had already stripped the brakes off the caterpillar digger and by time they landed he somehow forgot to put them back together again. 10 minutes later they arrived back at the Ranch and the New Mr Hunt was able to see the devastation caused by the attack and to view the dead bodies and massive dogs, he seemed to find viewing the corpses distasteful.
The shepherd had a nice chat to him, offering her condolences etc. although the crew believed that this Mr Hunt was in fact the Mr Hunt from before they couldn’t find any chink in his story, demeanour or trip him up in any way shape or form â€" (if only the had wondered how the letter seemed to appear after they had left the ranch as they had searched it thoroughly for clues the night before :))
Anyway they all headed back to town to return the townsfolk back to their abodes. They had already decided to do a wide sweep of radio signals and as they lifted off they heard a strange, demonic voice ordering them to do it!.. they headed back to the ranch and unloaded the diggers and using triangulation located the source of the signal. It was coming from a long valley up in the mountains.
As they landed in the valley on the other side of the ridge from the large fire spotted a few nights before they got their night vision gear out and loaded up the mule. Toad carried the portable device to track the radio signal and sure enough it seemed to be emanating from a cave. Toad took the portable device, a weapon and night vision goggles and investigated. He found evidence of habitation a very crude bed, evidence of animals being eaten and a well hidden speaker from which the message was coming. Evidently whoever slept in that bed, was getting a subliminal (or maybe not so subliminal) message, on inspection of the equipment Toad realised that it was automatic, and on a timer. Some poor soul was being brain washed, but who and why? He investigated further into the cave and found a narrow passage heading straight into the mountain. A brief radio exchange and the crew figured that if they followed it they would find a way under the mountain to the valley opposite, where the fire was. As toad made his way back the other pressed further up the valley and there in front of them was a mountain of brushwood and other inflammable things. At the edge of the night vision range a figure appeared, hunched over, almost on all fours like an animal. The captain ordered Alice to shoot him in the leg and make sure he couldn't escape, seconds later the captain switched on the main beam headlights on the mule and Alice took the shot. With a tortured scream the figure dropped and the mule leapt forwards.
Whoever it was was in one hell of a mess, his face was just a mass of scar tissue, as if someone had tried to rip his own face off. The figured that the pathetic wretch was no other than the James boy, the one who had gone missing the day before the murders started. This was no Reaver, this was some poor dumb kid who had been brainwashed into thinking he was a Reaver. The fire was deliberate, ( a quick scan of the other messages found various ones, such as everything must burn, etc) this poor kid was a scapegoat, the fire was meant to attract attention and he, the 'Reaver' was going to be found and prosecuted â€" aka hung. They were dealing with a very sick mind, but as Toad had been with them at all times, they figured it must have been another sick mind!
The bundled the poor lad onto the mule, heavily sedated and clutching tightly to the shepherd and headed back to the ship and town. A quick explanation to the sheriff and mayor about all of their findings and then to bed.
The next morning they decided that they had achieved everything that they could in this locale, and had to consider finding the missing wife who had fled to Athens. The captain (pockets laden with credits from the Hunt ranch) asked the Mayor about a reward for saving the place. They were given a reward in cattle :) The mayor did ask that they settle up with the widow Jones before they left. Strangely Alice volunteered for the task, he had decided he might get payment in kind.
Asking shyly that as the widow hadn't had a man to help her with all those things that a good woman needed a man for, he was amazed to find himself being taken up to her boudoir, only to find that the widow needed a man all right and that was to fix that damned shutter, oh and while he was offering manly things he might as well cut lumber for the wood shed, as well as draw water and repair the drains :) poor Alice left the credits for the board and lodgings and staggered back to the ship. With half a dozen prime head of beef the crew blasted off and headed towards the for want of a better word â€" star port to try and track down the missing woman.
Excellent stuff M - top-notch 8)
Only thing that would make this better would be seeing it gamed out in 10mm ;)
I have resized the plans for the Jo Lyn down to 10mm and keep on meaning to get some figures painted - as yet no paint has been waved about, never mind put on any fgures. I did get them out the other day and and then thouht bollox can't be ars*d and put them away again :-[
I will attempt to paint some fgures and then get some photos taken of a game in progress, however most of it is in the minds of the players and only combat causes figures to be broken out :)
After a brief Hiatus we return to Whitefall again.
The crew were heading towards Halldene Canyon star port with their 7 contented cows and a strongbox containing a lot of dosh.
About 40 minutes out from their destination Toad got an inkling that the engine wasn’t quite right, whether it was a sound or a vibration nobody knows but after an amazing roll he realised that the compression boot was bent and if they didn’t land within an hour the ship would land for them more than likely in a flaming fireball. The captain ordered that Toad do what he could to keep them flying. Toad went back to the engine, and again with an impressive roll on his repair dice, he managed to extend the flight time to 4 hours.
Everyone got ready for a crash landing just in case.
Upon landing in Halldene Canyon they were met by an officious looking customs officer who asked where they had come from as they hadn’t appeared on any of the long range or short range scanners (they had in fact landed illegally to sell the original herd of cattle) When asked what the cargo was the captain replied cattle...
Then the questioning began
“Where did you get them?†a quick look at the map
“Errrrr Ita?â€
How long have you had them?
“Emmmmm a long time†a quick think “in fact they are almost part of the crew!â€
“You will of course have a bill of sale as well as custom dockets?â€
“I believe we have suh, somewhere on the ship, as I said we have had them a long time!â€
The customs officer then went aside a little and spoke into a communicator, before inviting the crew to a meeting with the commander of the base. The concrete and steel structure was akin to a heliport. All other buildings surrounding it, and outside the perimeter fence were made of wood or adobe.
The commander asked the questions again and this time Toad (who has the big mouth hindrance got to answer before the captain)
“Why didn’t we pick your vessel up on our long range or short range scanners?â€
“That’s easy mate, because we sneaked in, avoiding them!â€
“Oh really and why would that be?â€
The captain tried valiantly to get a word in before Toad in his Australian accent burst out,
“We were smuggling cows to that town over in Greendale, then we went up to Dry Gulch and killed a pile of people, oh yeah and a pile of dogs, oh not to mention those bank robbers tooâ€
The captain apologised for the outburst of his chief engineer, stating that...â€as a decorated soldier he had received a head wound, and unfortunately he has these strange outbursts poor man, actually believes what he is saying!â€
The commander flicks a switch and there on the cortex is the picture of the crew in the process of thwarting the aforementioned bank robbery.
“SO captain would you like to reassess the story you have just told me, or would you like to continue with the pretence?â€
Having been rumbled the crew were left to stew a bit, after first of all Toad asking if they had a compression boot to replace theirs. A few moments later the commander informed them that they did and that it would cost 4000 credits to get it.
After a few hours the crew were again interrupted by the commander who asked if they would be willing to pay a fine, before the governor arrived. The captain, a few twinkles short of a rainbow, snapped that the man should call it the bribe rather than a fine. Without blinking, the commander then repeated would they be willing to pay a bribe, before the governor got there, he then added that the Governor could potentially impound their vessel for illegal entry, smuggling, travelling without necessary paperwork, lying to an official and other illegal activities that they would find with enough time. The crew however, decided to risk the governor the following day.
Around an hour later a gentleman wandered into the room and asked for the captain of the Jo Lyn as he had a proposition to make to him.
It transpired that he was the captain of the Anaconda the Firefly class that they saw on landing. Unfortunately the ship wasn’t able to fly due to a plasma coil breech. He wanted to know whether our captain would be willing to take his cargo of passengers to Athens, if he would Captain Luther would pay for the fuel and a little something on top. The captain pointed out that the Jo Lyn although spacious, had only one cabin spare and the Anaconda had seven that needed accommodation for the two day flight.
Luther had solved the problem with his company’s ingenious hab pod set up. Basically within a few hours a self contained habitation block could be installed in the Jo Lyn’s forward hold. This block could hold up to 6 people, with running water, toilets and entertainment. It did not have space for catering, so the passengers would eat with the crew, or at least use the Jo Lyn’s mess for their meals at a different time to the crew.
The captain agreed that as they (if they managed to get away with their ship) were going to Athens anyway would surely be delighted to help a fellow businessman. â€" The trick would be getting out of the star port, preferably alive.
The captain asked Luther how he accessed the room; the simple answer was to pay the man outside the door to let him in J
The shepherd asked to speak to the commander using barely veiled threats about what would happen when the governor arrived, somehow the shepherd seems to be changing, it is almost as if she has been reprogrammed and the outer facade is starting to slip... I mean she knows brothels and has contacts with a crime lord; it does make one wonder, but anyway...
The commander seemed unduly worried as he was a nephew of the governor and believed that blood was indeed thicker than water. Evidently they weren’t going to leave through intimidation. Perhaps money would talk where threats wouldn’t...
A mere 1000 credits would allow them to leave; the captain offered a tenth of this price, merely 100 credits.
As it happened, Patience (the governor) arrived the following morning, after the shepherd gave their word that the crew would not try to escape even when allowed to return to the ship.
The cows had been sold for a quarter of their value, but at least they were out of number two hold. The captain and Alice were off talking to the passengers, worried that they may cause problems, Toad was attempting to help the crew of the Anaconda get her working again, this left the shepherd to deal with patience, which she did admirably. It was agreed that they would pay the fine of 100 credits as well as take a personal cargo to Athens for the governor.
All that remained was for the passengers to assemble on board and then once refuelled they could take off, admitedly with the mysterious cylinder complete with a cryogenic computer attached.
The captain and Alice were a suspicious lot and had already a brief description from Luther on who the passengers were.
A soap star
An underwear model
An agricultural parts salesman
A married couple moving to angel to set up a hardware store with their son
A Chinese Traveller, seeing the verse
A businessman of nondescript origin.
Therefore they decided that the Chinese passenger was obviously part of a Tong gang and they would be looking for missing fingers and tattoos up both arms.
As for the agricultural parts salesman, he would be selling guns, missiles and the odd tank.
The model was fair game for Alice - or so he thought (she might actually be a model for the magazine Chicks with D*cks we are keeping him in suspense on that one :) )
When they entered (what might be described as the passenger lounge) they were met by a Woman with Purple hair, in her 50's who was shocked that they did not recognise her. Evidently Kelli Eyte thought everyone had seen her in the Cortex smash hit 'Whitefall' (think Dallas, dynasty and Little House on the Prairie all rolled into one) She was most put out by their indifference, which was tempered when they pointed out that the shepherd was a fan.
Second to catch their eye was a well endowed woman in her early 30's who was watching them with interest. Jane Owens the underwear model, although in her 30's is a good looking woman with ample assests to help sell ladies underwear.
Alice introduced himself, by saying that he would quite happily share his cabin with her. The captain again had to apologise for Alice's behaviour mentioning the head wound, (or potential head wound if he didn’t stop it).
Bob Worthington the arms dealer - sorry agricultural dealer was indeed a tractor parts salesman. He was able to show Alice a very nice working model of the latest design.
Lei Chow Fe is a man in his early 20's who is travelling the verse on the futuristic equivalent of a gap year. He is travelling from planet to planet on his journey before returning to the central planets. Much to their relief he had all digits attached and lack of visible tattoos.
Angelo and Vivian Potter are the married couple travelling to Athens and then to Angel to meet with their son.
Mr Roy Keene however was missing and only arrived as the ship was about to leave.
The captain decreed that Miss Owens would have the one spare cabin in the ship, much to the disgust of Ms Eyte. He also considered asking toad to put a temporary weld on her door, or better still Alice's.
As soon as the shepherd heard that the captain had 'allowed' the heroine of Whitefall to languish in the hold immediately offered her cabin for the duration of the journey.
A few minutes before take off Mr Keene arrived in a rush apologising for his lateness as he had been in a meeting with a lady. The captain did enquire as to whether or not the lady in question would be setting out an arrest warent against mr Keene, who assured him that Tallulah had been recompensated and she wouldn't be worried about anything :)
With roaring engines the Jo-Lyn lifted off, with the new compression boot repaired to such a high standard that I allowed the original ship hindrance to be removed.
We shall have to wait until next week to see what will happen next :)
Excellent again - nicely set up for the next shenanigans 8)
Cheers Nik - two days journey time between Whitefall and Athens, I am sure nothing can possibly go wrong :D :D ;D ;D

Shhhh don't tell anyone else but there will be at least one murder and a run in with a reaver vessel, and let's not forget the shepherd has been increasing her combat edges as her programming begins to assert itself, but whatever you do, don't tell Wiggy or Jim ;)
Mum's the word, secret's safe with me ;)

Help, help, help the shepherd is a psycho, she took out two reavers with a frying pan, that programming for hers is failing really fast now. She even wore a dress like this in a poker game:

Hehe, nice story so far, Maenoferren! Looking forward to see what mishaps the crew encounter next:)
I got half way through the write up last night then it dawned on me it was 1.40am and i needed sleep. :-[ :-[ :-[
We left the crew with their eclectic group of passengers on the two day trip from Whitefall to Athens.
Kelli, the one ensconced in the shepherd's room asked to speak to the captain. When the shepherd asked the reason why, after a bit of persuasion, Kelli divulged that she wished to see Whitefall for the last time, much to the Shepherd's dismay, thinking her heroine was about to die, but Kelli would not divulge her reasons for the comment. SO the Shepherd went up to the bridge to ask the captain if he wouldn’t mind turning the Jo Lyn around so that Kelli could look upon the planet again... it took a bit of persuading, but eventually he agreed and turned the ship about.
Kelli had a lovely view of Whitefall for all of 15 seconds before the Jo Lyn returned to her earlier course.
Poor Kelli had to view the receding Whitefall in the corridor on a chair 'stolen' from Alice's room by the Shepherd. Alice Was out in the various corridors armed with his side arm when Miss Owens appeared from her room, she asked to see his weapon, and after a moment of confusion he realised that she meant his side arm. He handed it over, without thinking. Within seconds she had it disassembled and then reassembled, before handing it back to him. Alice was in love â€" or possibly Lust... he quickly rushed back to his room to check his back copies of Bikini Girls with Guns, just in case Miss Owens was a centrefold, although he was sure he would have remembered if she was.
The Shepherd invited everyone for coffeein the dining room and to ask if they would be willing to take part in a poker game an hour after dinner. She also wanted to check everyone out and it was when Roy Keene arrived that the really interesting thing happened. Kelli was doing what she does best, being the centre of attention, when she noticed Roy. She suddenly rushed across the room shouting Flyn and hugged him much to the amusement of everyone except the man himself. He managed to untangle himself and informed both Kelli and the room in general that his name was Roy Keene and that the lady in question was very much mistaken.
Kelli seemed unperturbed and carried on talking about the last time they met at that Casino on Angel and how that simply horrid man he was with had spoiled the party atmosphere totally.
Roy or Flyn seemed most put out by the turn of events and said that he would like to take his coffee in his room and promptly left. Kelli was the centre of attention once again with everyone including the shepherd asking her questions. The shepherd managed to get Kelli alone and obtained the following information.
She had met Roy Keene or Flyn Arthur around 5 years before on Angel, they were both regulars in a casino. Flyn was an accountant and on their last visit he was with a rather wealthy but totally unsavoury type. He was obnoxious in the extreme. He was just like cousin Jim Bob in the show, you know the one who was a that bad man. A few discussions then revolved around what happened in the various episodes following Jim Bob's disappearance after the fire and then re-appearance in episode 354. The Shepherd then found out that a few days later Flyn disappeared and wouldn’t answer his phone or respond to any kind of a messages.
The shepherd asked whether Kelli could be mistaken but she responded that Flyn had a scar under his right eye and strangely enough so did Mr Keene.
The Shepherd left Kelli to get ready for the poker match and went to check on her dedicated sourcebox for the name Roy Keene, it came back with a banker from Whitefall, well respected, two children etc, etc, etc!
She then tried Flyn Arthur Accountant and all of a sudden the screen disrupted and a classified file screen popped up. Followed by a quick upload off ship. Somebody now knew the shepherd had tried to check up on Flyn. Toad was summoned to sort out the computer and concurred that info had been uploaded. HE then used a repair skill to re-jig the sourcebox and ensure it would be seen by everyone else as a different machine.
The shepherd then went to have a quiet chat with Roy/flyn who inisite3d that he was Keene and that Kelli was mistaken. He did however refuse to leave his room in the ventral hold.
Dinner was held in the dining room with everyone present except Mr Keene, After dinner those who wished to play poker did so in the dining room, whilst Alice stayed on duty in the bridge. Miss Owens showed an aptitude for cards as well as guns and ladies underwear. The Shepherd shocked everyone except the captain, as she wasn't carrying a fried chicken, by wearing a rather revealing black number.
As the game finished Alice got a proximity warning light flashing. He called the captain to the bridge and it seemed that there was another ship out there on a perpendicular heading which would pass within a couple of miles of theirs. A quick scan showed a higher level of radiation than there should be, as if a core was exposed. Reavers. They dropped the nose then shut off all power, hoping that they would disappear in the black, but unfortunately the residual heat from the engines remained and the other ship dropped their nose too and drew closer.
The captain ordered crew to don their space suits and for all passengers to make their way to the Galley. Alice was ordered to stand guard whilst the captain made evasive manoeuvres.
Without warning and EMP burst struck the JO Lyn and all controls were lost. The captain valiantly
tried to get them back on line and succeeded just as another burst hit the ship, the Captain used his ace edge to soak the damage and attempted to get behind the Reaver ship but failed to do so, they were stuck on his tail. Instead he over pressurised the rear hold. Toad was ordered to the bridge in case of further hits. It was then that the captain gained the higher card, and as the Reaver prepared to fire he opened the back doors. Unfortunately Toad in his rush to get to the bridge forgot to close the intervening doors, He had a few moments of sphincter twitching and managed to hold on before the emergency override kicked in and the doors shut. The debris that blew out of the rear doors struck the Reaver craft on the bridge. Unfortunately the strike did no damage. The shepherd managed to send a mayday message. Seconds later a massive EMP burst struck the Jo Lyn doing 32 points of damage, all electrical circuits blew in an instant. Alice managed to open the doors manually, handing his side arm to Owens, he made his way down to the bridge. Everyone knew that a boarding action was imminent.
A few moments later the ventral hold door was breached and everyone readied their weapons. Alice mad the first kill as the Reavers rushed up the stairs from the cargo hold.
Toad rushed to his workshop to design a bomb using his McGiver edge. Alice killed the next Reaver, but the third rushed forwards big axe waving, he hit Alice but failed to wound. Both the captain and shepherd fired but missed.
The captain gained a joker and fired although he hit he failed to wound the Reaver, who went next and swung at Alice. Luckily he missed. The shepherd grabbed her frying pan and swung around the bulkhead. Even at a -4 on the dice roll she scored a 13 and then a massive 21 damage on the wound roll breaking the
Reaver's neck.
Toad manages to produce his home made bomb and heads back to the stairwell where more Reavers are rushing forwards.
The first Reaver manages to wound Alice, but he easily shrugs off the damage. The captain and shepherd both fire the captain misses and the shepherd fails to wound.
The shepherd gains a joker and swings around the corner again. She hits with a raise then deals out enough damage to break another neck. Toad rushes forward, priming his bomb as he goes. He flings it down the stairwell and throws himself back as a huge blast rocks the ship and bits of Reaver and bits of passenger pods fly up the stairs. He managed to deal 38 damage on 3 D8.
The Shepherd rushes upstairs to check on the passengers whilst Alice and the captain make their way down to the ventral hold. As he goes the Captain orders the surrender of any remaining Reavers.
Strangely enough they didn’t comply and the two remaining ones attacked as Alice entered the hold.
They shake him. Luckily he goes first and uses a benny to unshake. Killing the Reaver out right. The remaining one attacks and fails to do any damage. The captain takes careful aim and drills him between the eyes and with no bennies left the Reaver is unable to soak any wounds.
The captain and Alice carefully check the hold for any remaining Reavers. Luckily their aren’t, but there is a Reaver craft docked with theirs, which will need checking. Unfortunately Toad's bomb has shredded both Reavers and accommodation pod. We will have to wait until next Monday to see if they have the guts to enter the Reaver craft.
Great report.
Ohhh! THey're in trouble!
Excellent - nice stuff again M 8)

A bit of a short write up, I needed it done before Monday's game
Well the boys and girls of the Jo Lyn had bravely repelled a Reaver attack and were now ready to make their way onto the Reaver vessel and remove any further threat.
The captain and Alice, both suited up were in the shredded hold. The majority of the pods had been destroyed. Two however had survived pretty much intact, unfortunately these were the two nearest the Reaver ship hiding the door.
As they rounded the corner they noticed three seemingly dead Reavers, as the captain covered them they seemed to twitch so old Betsy the shotgun came to bear and kaboom three rounds later they were dead, but strangely enough they seemed to still twitch, not wanting to get too close they did inspect them a bit and saw that their skin seemed to be be covered in wallpaper paste, and come to think of it the blood splatter looked a bit wallpaper paste too.
The moved into the Reaver craft and noticed a door to the front , the rooms on the lower deck were empty. Luckily they kept their dinner down (especially as they were suited up) as they found the remains of the Reavers last meal hanging in chains from the bulkhead.
As they made their way up the stairs a Reaver appeared, the captains shotgun spoke again, but instead of blood splatter, it was a yucky white colour. The Reavers were infected with something. Thank the lord for the suits!
The cockpit door was opened and two angry Reavers Burst out, Both were cut down. The blood spray from these was red, a further door was opened and another Reaver died in a shower of red gore. These doors were sealed and airtight.
A horrible thought came across the two of them. Whatever had attacked the Reavers, had not come from the Reaver ship. That left one horrible possibility â€" Whatever had killed the Reavers had come from their ship. This was borne out, by the ones on the Jo Lyn who were now melting.
The Captain did a search of the Jo Lyn whilst Alice dragged the Reaver bodies inside.
The captain found a small phial about the size of a pepper pot with a hole through it. It seemed to have come from the one of the shredded pods. But whose?
The pods damaged belonged to the enigmatic Mr Keene/ Flyn Arthur. Bob Worthington, Lei Chow Fe and the Potter's.
The crew had the slight problem of what to do with the Reaver craft, the doors of the Jo Lyn had been forced open and two retractable arms were holding them open.
Toad did a common knowledge roll and aced it multiple times, meaning he knew exactly what to do. Alice was sent back across to the Reaver ship to reroute the Primary Hydraulic coupling, followed by a removal and replacement of the power converter housing. This would allow him to head back to the door and then press the release button, this would give him 10 seconds to get aboard the Jo Lyn before her doors shut.
The Shepherd meantime was in the galley talking to the passengers and keeping them calm. The captain had informed her about the phial of nastyness he had found, and that he believed one of their passengers had brought it on board, and that whatever it was it contained, it was deadly. So the shepherd simply told them that the attack was over, and that the Reavers had been killed by some form of chemical weapon. Immediately she said this, Keli went into hysterics, screaming that they would all die. Did she know what it was? Bob Worthington tried to reassure her that he was sure that it would be over now and that they were safe, but Keli was way beyond reassurance.
The captain ordered toad to come up with a way of neutralising a chemical weapon .Which he did using a sun bed and various other gubbins as he could find in his workshop.
The Captain and Alice had the problem of what to do with the shredded pods etc. in the ventral hold. There was no way they could decontaminate it all. I t left only one option...open the door, which is what they did. As the contents of the hold rushed out, they noticed a very large heavy calibre firearm hurtle into the void. Somebody had come aboard armed as well. As the air disappeared, they noticed strange spots on the floor that had been covered by the debris, as they watched, they curled up and rolled into balls. Something was very odd.
Decontamination of the hold began, luckily they remembered to tell Toad to hold fire on the restarting of the air conditioning.
The shepherd had problems of her own, Everyone was trying to get Keli calmed down, everyone that is except Mr Keene, who was sat in the corner of the galley his back against the wall. She asked Mr Worthington quietly, to see if he was okay. A quick shake of the head, Mr Keene seemed to be very dead, was it the nerve toxin?
The shepherd then asked Mr Worthington to switch the lights off, even though they weren’t on due to the power cut, it wouldn’t be a good idea for the lights to come back on with the late Mr Keene in full view.
With the lights covered, the shepherd checked down behind Mr Keene only to have her gloves come back wet... it wasn't a nerve toxin, it was a simple case of murder. (unless he accidentally stabbed himself in the back)
With the decontamination completed the power was returned and light and air flooded the Jo Lyn again. Evidently the lights in the galley were broken (according to the shepherd) She informed everyone politely that most of the contents of the ventral hold was now in the black. This caused an uproar, but it was Mr Potter who stepped in to her aid. He informed everyone that, if the captain deemed it necessary to vent the cargo, then he would not do so lightly. Mr Worthington backed him in this too.
As the captain arrived on the main deck, the passengers were moved to the rear hold and questioned. The passengers, in his hand he held a pepper pot, that looked at first glance like the real phial, that was sealed in the futuristic equivalent of Tupperware. He held it up, watching for a response or any type of reaction. The only one that showed the faintest reaction was Miss Owens. The captain and Alice took her aside for further questioning.
It turned out that Miss Owen's was a cop, most craft leaving Whitefall had an operative on board. Evidently whitefall had a secret base on it that was developing a new strain of nerve toxin, fast acting and deadly. They couldn’t work out where it was coming from and who was the courier, they had had a break that told them a shipment was leaving on a craft to Angel. Her prime suspect was Roy Keene â€" the captain informed her that he was dead. The Weapon in the hold appeared to be hers, well at least she had a large handgun, but couldn’t promise that the one that flew out the door was hers.
Miss Owen's asked to use the cortex on the craft to see what she could find.:
Mr Keene/ Flyn Arthur. He was an accountant who had worked for some rather unpleasant people, he was not a nice person and when he was caught stealing from his bosses he turned states evidence and was put into protective custody until the trial and then given a new identity a long way from his original locale. So indeed Kelli did recognise him for his previous life.
Bob Worthington: Was an engineer before the war and is now working on agricultural machinery. He works for Blue Sun Corporation in their Agricultural machinery section. He has an impeccable police record.
Lei Chow Fe A minor Tong member who is being used as a courier for a gang from Angel. He is small fry, dearly wants to be accepted as a more important member of the gang.
Angelo and Vivian Potter: Ranchers from Whitefall who had two sons, the eldest is indeed opening up a hardware store. The younger son committed suicide a number of years before.
Kelli Eyte: A very popular Cortex star, she is a recovering addict, she disappeared from the screen for a season, this was covered up in the story line of her visit to look for her long lost son, she would be hung out to dry by the fans if someone was to let slip of her previous problems.
The captain asked if he was on there, - 14 pages of information later he decided to see who the shepherd was. Strangely enough she didn't exist, no record of her was found, even in the records of her order... Who is this woman?
The crew are now deciding how to go about questioning the passengers... It is getting more like an Agatha Christie story as we go along :)
It's all good though buddy...keeps me reading...great stuff 8)

I bought the Ghouls for Reavers and also some vietnamese civillians and the guys with a pole too. All I need is a fat colonel saunders figure and I am sorted :)

Cheers guys... bit of a doh moment there, I nearly voted on my poll as to who killed Roy Keene.... that would have given the game away.
Tune in tomorrow (or when I get it written up) to see who did the terrible deed, unless he did indeed accidently stab himself in the back :D
