Title: New Player Questions!
Post by: Xavier on 16 March 2024, 11:28:16 PM
As I am a new player, I thought I would collect any questions I have here in this thread. Here is my first question:

What does the A mean in the Notes for the unit profiles? To clarify, in the profile for FV.432 in the British list, there is an A marked in the Notes and Abilities. What does it mean? I have scanned the book and can't figure out where it is referenced.

If you go to the back of the book, before the printed army lists, there is a whole section on 'Special Characteristics'.
Most are self-explanatory - but some have short-form designations - such as 'A' = amphibious; R = restricted arc (this also includes limited vision or lower crew numbers - reflecting the crew being distracted by having to compensate for fewer members); S1 or S2 = different forms of stabilized firing; IR = Infra-Red optics; TI = Thermal Imaging; and 'Exposed' - which covers open or partially open-topped or very weak top armour (which can sometimes appear as 'O'= Open-topped in the lists currently, although that will change/disappear with the up & coming Army List Errata Update).

There are also Specific Army characteristics associated with certain lists - these can be found at the bottom of each individual army list - especially the on-line army lists.

All these add more 'flavor' to each of the unit types.
In some instance - especially with Export models - more sophisticated technology was not built into some vehicles. So it is not uncommon to see an export Western tank (for example) without IR or TI (for example), whilst the home-forces unit would have it. Each such 'upgrade' (usually) adds an extra 5pts to the cost of the unit or reduces it by 5pts if it is omitted. Units that are classified as Reconnaissance (Recce) will cost 20pts more than their standard model - to reflect their Recce capabilities.

Hope that is helpful?
Cheers
Mark

Useful to note that in reality the FV432 required some time and effort to become amphibious.
Unlike the similar M113 APC, the FV432 is not amphibious without preparation. The FV432 must be prepared with a flotation screen erected with ten stays around the top of the hull. A trim vane goes up in front, and an extension goes on the exhaust pipe. When floating, it is propelled by its tracks.

From a game perspective/mechanism it makes very little difference and in reality even vehicles that can go straight from 'road to water' with no preparation are usually advised to stop and check 1st - just to make sure that they are fully water tight and somebody has not forgotten to close the rear door properly  ;D  ;D  ;D

Next question:

If I purchase the artillery (British 105mm L118) is it assumed to come with the land rover, or should I purchase a separate land rover to two it at 10pts? The L118 has a move of 50, so I am assuming that it comes with the land rover....
