It's that time of year again! Get yourselves ready for the Pendraken Painting Competition 2024!
Our annual Painting Competition will once again be running throughout the month of February, so get those entries finished, grab your camera and get them posted! The Competition will open to entries on February 1st and will run all the way through until the end of the month. This year you'll get an extra day too due to the leap year! You can enter anything that's been painted over the past 12 months and we can't wait to see the entries.
Closing date for the competition will be midnight on Thursday 29th February and we'll then open up the voting threads for everyone to decide our winners.
The categories will be the same as usual:
Categories:
Foot - Pre-20th C. - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Foot - 20th C. - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Mounted - Max: 20 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Vehicle - Max: 3 vehicles on or off bases, including wagons and chariots.
Fantasy & Sci-Fi - Max: 40 figures, on either a single base, multiple bases, or in a movement tray.
Open - Single Base - Anything which doesn't fit into the other categories, with a max base size of 100x100mm. This could be a command base, a single figure, artillery base, etc.
Open - Army - Anything which is larger than the maximums in the other categories, so multiple units or a whole army.
If you're unsure which category to put your entry in, let us know what it is, and we'll point you in the right direction!
Rules - Please Read!
- Firstly, all figures must be Pendraken products, including the TB Line ranges. Conversions are allowed, but only on our figures.
1. You must be a Forum member to enter, but other than that, everyone is welcome!
2. You may enter as many times as you like but each entry is only allowed 2 images (except for the 'Army!' category, see below). We do not allow montage images anymore, just to keep a level playing field. You can however edit your two images into a single file for the sake of uploading/hosting them. The best way to add your images is through a separate photo hosting site, or a blog, but if you have any difficulty posting pics then let us know and we'll help you out.
3. The 'Open - Army!' category may have 5 photo's, as it's difficult to cover a whole army with just a single photo!
4. All entries must be your own work, and have not been entered into any online competitions before.
5. Entries should have been completed in the last 12 months, so we hope you've all been busy!
6. You can post WIP (work-in-progress) photos if you wish, but please create a new thread for these. You can also post extra photos of your work elsewhere on the Forum. These will not count towards your competition entry.
7. The winners will be decided by the Forum members, so once the closing deadline has passed, we'll put up a poll thread for each category where our members can vote on who they want to win. The polls will close 7 days later and the winners will be announced.
8. Competition threads will be created on the opening date, purely for your entries.
9. Pendraken may use your pics in future promo/marketing, catalogue covers or web pics. Entering gives your permission for your pics to be used.
And now the good bit, we've got over £500 of prizes available for you! The winners and runners-up in each category will receive the following:
- The Winner of each category will receive a £50 Pendraken voucher!
- The Runner-Up of each category will receive a £25 Pendraken voucher!
Vouchers will be sent out to you by email once the winners have been announced. You can then use it on any of the 8000+ products on our website.
So:
Competition opens - February 1st!
Closing deadline - Midnight, February 29th!
As always, if there's any questions just let us know!
Gentlemen, start your engines...
Good luck all.
Time for my blaze of glory before my eye operation! (pathetically transparent sympathy tactic)
Hmmm, time to remember what I painted in the last 12 months and what I might be spurred on to finish for the comp. As always looking forward to all the entries and good luck to one and all!

It failed ;D ;D . Should be fully cleared in 2-3 days.
Looking forward to giving it a go. Have a few Pendraken projects to finish up before the deadline.

You have my sympathy, I'm booked in for a cataract operation in mid March.
Apparently my prescription will likely be much changed afterwards.
So it begins.....again😁

It will be - had one on my right eye 18 mths ago, now have a virtually clear right lens.
The 2024 Painting Competition is now open!
Some handy, quick tips for anyone considering making some entries:
- Use a suitable background for your entry, either plain white/black card or on a game table with some scenery behind it. This will always look better than on your cutting mat or the kitchen table!
- Don't enter too many times in the same category! So often we see multiple excellent entries from the same person and then they don't win, just because the votes were split across the different entries. Pick your best one (maybe two!) and you'll have a better chance of a prize.
- Use good lighting, or use a photo editor to lighten the image if possible. A daylight lamp, 'white' artificial light, even outside in the garden if it's dry enough! Make sure you get some light on your entry so that we can see your painting!
Good luck everyone!

40 foot or 20 horse - just half a unit then?

Are conversions allowed?

Yep:

We're barely started and I'm already feeling that nothing I paint compares to the current entries. :(
I haven't even started mine!
I started painting some stuff to enter this year, then covid hit me, so the painting has stopped for the present :( .

Yep. Same here. I'm still gonna enter because you never know but... yep.

Don't waste time posting stuff here, then. Get on with the painting :D
I have a question about rule 4 (the can't have been entered in an online competition before one). In previous years I have entered a couple of units which are now part of a much larger army. I would just leave them out but I can't actually tell which specific ones they are so would this disqualify the whole army?
(I'm ok on rule 5 I think because all of it had additional work in the last 12 months on painting and basing).
The more I think about it I don't think I'll put them in as it's all a bit murky but I'd just like to know the official ruling.

I think that's OK, if you've entered them as individual units last year but they're now part of a whole army entry with lots more stuff, then I think that counts as a 'new' entry.

In that case I may do...
Either way though it's good to know for if some of the units I complete this year make it into a completed army next year!
Ta.

I know Leon has now answered on this officials. But if you can't tell in person which units are which, I don't think there is much chance of it being spotted in the competition judging!
At least I'm not the only one who struggles to remember what I painted when
I do like the staging of your entries - good to see it in this comp, sets the minis off very nicely.

I have to refer to my painting diaries on here to know what I painted when ;D
Seconded on the staging :-bd

I usually post pictures of things I've completed on Instagram so I just scroll back to January and check that way because otherwise I'd have no idea!
Mostly I just don't want to take the mickey over repeated entries or things that I did outside the year time frame (especially as I picked up about 6 new armies over the last year with birthday/Xmas presents)!
And thanks for the compliments on the framing everyone. I like to make the models look at home but not distract from them as they're the point!
So now by the end of the month I need to finish my Scots greys, winter German platoon, Alien army and farmyard animal "army". Easy, right?
:!! :D
I havent got a hope in hell of winning as my painting is poor compared to previous winners so good luck to those better painters out there.
" farmyard animal "army" "
George Orwell's Animal Farm looks to have come a long way since I read it at school.
I think it would take me more than a year to paint an army so don't think I could ever enter one
Well, I managed to snap up some photos for the competition. I posted some of the background behind the selections and why its such a random bunch of entries over on my blog if anyone is interested: blog (http://lecoqfou.blogspot.com/2024/02/pendraken-painting-competition-2024.html)
Hoping to snap some pictures of my Yom Kippur War Egyptians and toss them into the competition as well. Good luck to everyone, there is some really lovely eye candy on display!
Are there any rules re adjusting an entry? I think I entered one of mine in haste and could now re-enter it as part of a whole unit

That's completely fine, just post the new entry in the relevant category and I can delete the original post.
Thanks for the clarification, if I can get them painted in time I will let you know in advance which ones I want replaced, if I don't manage to please let my entries stand as they are

No worries! 8)
Some cracking good entries this year. Good luck to everyone!
Many compliments to every participant! Very high level indeed

Wow, great entries this year.

Great entries again this year, my compliments to all the participants =D> =D> =D>
Democracy exercised.
Some very hard choices this year. So many great looking entries to choose from :-bd
Well done to all those who entered.
Phenomenal work by all . >:<
I apologise to those I did not vote for and I was initially far too swayed by "looks pretty, wish I had one of those" over "wow painting skill".
Voted. Good luck to all. I felt that some photos were so out of focus that it was impossible to come to a judgement about the entries, which was a pity but it just ruled them out.
Outstanding as it is every year. However many votes each might get they are all very good.
We've got some interesting votes coming in so far, with some very tight categories. Make sure to get your votes placed before we announce the winners at 6pm on Friday.
That's weird, when I've done my usual unread posts check each day, the voting categories didn't come up! Off to check and vote now...
Very impressive completion this year! Many difficult choices. Congrats to all that made the effort.
Really fantastic entries this year. Especially the army entries are amazing.
Yes, congratulations to all the entrants, some really amazing painting on display! Sadly I couldn't get mine completed in time. :(

Thanks for running the completion again Leon =D> =D> =D>
Agreed, great work Leon.
No worries, always a highlight of the year for me!
Thanks to Leon for putting this all together. I knew my chances were slim after seeing all of those beautiful entries. Congratulations to the prize winners, you all did a heck of a job!
