With the mini battle board done, it's time to turn my attention to the characters for my ASoA&M adventures
Planning 3-4 warbands, keeping mostly to Pendraken but with a few guest stars.
First up is my Romano-British Leader
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-151223130443.jpeg)
Ohh cool!
Thanks, however I think the head needs a bit more work
Not sure why I thought he had a closed helm, I'm going to blame the post-op meds I'm on
I think this is now heading in the right direction

:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Cracking work 8) !
Lovely job!
Couple more painted today
Archer with slight modifications
Added length to the bow and quiver, maybe a bit too long to be historically correct but it's King Arthur after all
Also need to add an arrow at some point
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-161223180331.jpeg)
This old retainer still needs his shield painting, I'm undecided if I want the whole band to have identical shield designs or even what pattern I want
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-161223180412.jpeg)
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Very nice job on the archer's bow and quiver :-bd

Adding an arrow ... there's dedication! But. Wot? No bow string? :D
If you need inspiration for the shield pattern, The Notitia Dignitatum has shield patterns for the Late Roman field army units. You might like to consider the Exculcatores Iuniores Britanniciani (The Stompers from Britain - Junior Unit) as a template?
Luke Ueda Sarson has a page here giving the images still extant for the unit shield design plus a summary of what we know about them here:

I was tempted, I've used stretched hot glue to good effect in the past
Thanks for the shield info
Archers update :D
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-171223132940.jpeg)
A couple of infantry finished
Minor mods
Spwarman with headswap
The other has a replaced weapon
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-181223171442.jpeg)
Impressive
Thanks
Still need to settle on shield design
I'd also like to turn my attention towards some adversaries but there is a lack of early Saxon characters out there
Plenty in the Saxon and Viking ranges if you look carefully
Quote from: Lord Speedy of Leighton on 18 December 2023, 09:06:37 PMPlenty in the Saxon and Viking ranges if you look carefully
They will certainly be worth a go but I'm hoping to mod some of the Dacians and Picts which seem a bit better scale wise
I'm looking for something like these
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-181223213047.jpeg)
And thinking this guy is a good start
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-181223213206.jpeg)
Well
I've made a start on the Saxons
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-191223104820.jpeg)
He looks crisper in the flesh
Body and head from a couple of different LR models, arm came from a Lancashire games miniature
Next one gets facial hair and fir cloak
And he's got a mate now too
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-191223171346.jpeg)
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Very impressive conversions :-bd
Thanks, I've another Pendraken order on its way that should give me enough to finish my Romano-British and Saxons, I've decided to go with Lancashire games for the Irish, they mix well with Pendraken and have a wild character that helps them stands out.
I'll then be looking to add some of the unique characters from the rules and finish up the terrain
Saxon standard
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-221223145716.jpeg)
Doesn't look standard at all, looks great!
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
The 300pt Irish warband is almost done, just the chieftain to finish off
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-261223114959-611911172.jpeg)
Mostly Lancashire minis but Keira made an appearance too
Good old Keira! 8)
Nice work there.
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Thanks
Got a brief game in last night using the sellworss and spellslingers solo npc mechanic
It worked well enough for basic scenarios
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-281223161902.jpeg)

Brilliant

I'm suprised you even worked out I was talking about sellswords with that spelling
They seem like an interesting evolution of the song of rule set
Finally finished the Irish
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-070124102716.jpeg)
Now making a start on the Saxon
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-070124102751.jpeg)
Very impressive
Thanks, its a mix of Pendrakens range and figures from lancashire games
The plan is 3 300pt warbands
1 Irish, 1 Saxon and the third being Romano-British
To play the historical version
I then only need a few characters and animals/monsters to play the Welsh legend version
Whether I progress to high medieval I havn't decided,
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd =D>
Those look really great. Top stuff :)
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
great to see them in action as well :-bd
Some terrain came through today so knocked up this tower and finished off my Merlin and someone I'll be using for
Gildas the Monk
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-110124151919.jpeg)
Excellent work there Corso. Sellswords and Spellslingers works really well for historical skirmish, just leave the magic bits out!
I have been thinking about givingbit a go at some point but want to finish this set first
I have a habit of flitting from one project to another but made a deal with myself I'd stop this year :D
QuoteI have a habit of flitting from one project to another . . .
I don't think you're the only one with that tendency.
Nope, but it's the only resolution I still have from New Year
Excellent. And good luck with the resolution :)
If I do a 2024 resolution, I think it'll have to be to play a game (last one was in 2017, iirc)
Quote from: Corso on 11 January 2024, 03:51:09 PMI have a habit of flitting from one project to another but made a deal with myself I'd stop this year :D
I seem to have developed a habit over the past few months of flitting from making no progress on one project to making no progress on another at frequent intervals.
Would focussing on making no progress on a single project be an improvement? :)
Corso, :-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd good luck with the surviving resolution ;)
Roy, just one, even a small one :)
Ithoriel, possibly but probably not ;D
Nice tower.
Flit like a butterfly
Still got plenty to keep this project on track with an order from Pendraken and some buildings from the baggage train on their way
This one's another from Leven, I modified the door to fit the scale of the figures better, needs a tidy up at some point but it'll fo for now
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-120124101542.jpeg)
Ah, Leven Miniatures...? I did wonder where the buildings had come from (you've probably mentioned, elsewhere, on this thread - I'll have a look).
I don't think I did, I mentioned sn order with baggage train that I'm hoping to get started on next week
My Pendraken order arrived this morning so I spent the afternoon putting Arthur's companions together
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-120124182926.jpeg)
Haven't used greenstuff for years but I'm enjoying this project, the Late Roman figures have a solid foundation to work with
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd

:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Seconded on the Lovely crisp shield patterns :-bd
You completed them pretty quickly as well :)
Thanks
Havn't go the hang of the Chi-Rho design so decided to keep it simple
:-bd I'll, also, state that I like how you've based them too.
I've made a mess of my individually based 10mm miniatures in the past, putting too much on to the base and crowding out/hiding the figure with basing stuff meant for larger sized figures. I must remember to have a look at these photos when I come back to doing 10mm foot figures.

It's a pretty simple approach, I mount the figure with superglue, coat with pva and dip in a 80/20ish fine sand, ground green flock mix while the pva is still tacky I dip again is a tub with small stones. What stays gets pressed in. Finally I'll add a bit of green flock here and there if it's looking a bit bland
Leave it to dry and coat with watered down pva glue to seal them in
Arthur's Romano-British are done
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-160124125035.jpeg)

Definitely a true wargamers definition of done ;D
Indeed I still have quite a list
My Saxons need a couple of Archers and
I still need suitable figures for
Mordred
Gwenhwyfar
Vortigern
As well as a Druid,Bard, Hag, and a Sorceress
And then it's on to the monsters...
:D
Saxons are almost done, mix of Lancashire and Pendrakens. Just need a couple of suitable bowmen
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-170124133910.jpeg)
Nice
I used the viking ones for mine

Well they are tiny buggers
Next step in the madness is I want a figure like this in 10mm
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-190124165122.jpeg)
After an extensive search the one here bottom left is the closeted pose I could find
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-190124165100.jpeg)
Time to go to work...
And after a lte night of modelling here she is
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-200124095912.jpeg)
Stripped down a little on the detail, greenstuff is hard to work with at this scale but she fits in well with the collection so I'm happy enough
Now to find a Mordred and a Morgana
Excellent work on the converting and colouring in Corso :-bd :-bd
Quote from: Corso on 20 January 2024, 10:00:25 AMAnd after a lte night of modelling here she is
Reminds me of when I used to start doing stuff - converting models - when I'd gone to bed, and it'd be just gone midnight. Having your painting table in your bedroom, sometimes isn't conducive to getting a good night's rest - another reason why I'm now moving stuff into our spare room.
Won't be the first time I've sculpted using blu-tak and used superglue over the top of it as a hardener - though, from memory, I've only ever used greenstuff on 10mm stuff.
Quote from: Corso on 18 January 2024, 08:47:06 AMI hadn't noticed that, not intended and needs fixing
Don't bother they are fine. I have a couple of axes, one of which was my grandfather's, came to me via my father, so it must be over 100 years old, and their heads are not the same colour.
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Another great conversion :)
Thanks
Moved on to some terrain while I wait for the Saxon Archers
Start of the Village
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-220124100426.jpeg)
Burial mound
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-220124100500.jpeg)
Lovely work
Thanks
The project is really coming together, the Saxon Archers have arrived so it's just the last bits of terrain to sort
A river with crossings, 3-4 more huts, a church and some walls to go
Then it's on to beasts and monsters :D
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Needed some otherworldly warriors so made some from some old MM ghosts as I wanted them more in the style of the dead men of dunharrow
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-020224153916.jpeg)
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
Overall effect works really well
Corso, your figures and terrain look excellent.
Thanks
I've mainly been on a terrain kick as I need to star working out what to use for the mythical beasts
Corner River section, more useful than simply spliting the board in half and easier to fit in the box
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-040224131758.jpeg)
Another dwelling and a well
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-040224132207.jpeg)
Start of a defensive wall, decided to make it in sections since it's more versatile and easier to store
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/61/16577-040224131906.jpeg)
:-bd =D> :-bd =D> :-bd
still got a bit more terrain to add but I'm now looking at monsters etc.
this is most of the list for the mid-fantasy version
Banshee
BlackDog
Big Cat/Cat of palug
Dog Head Warriors and Champion
Dragon
Dwarves
Ghost
Giant
Giant boar
Giant Wolf
Giant Stag
Hobgoblins
Serpent
Otherworld Warriors and Champion
Tormented soul
Dog Head Warriors and Champion - I'm looking at beastmen for the
Hobgoblins I'm undecided to use either coppleston half orcs or some sort of goblin
Most of those are readily available from Pendraken.
Headeosmwn are good.
There is also an interesting chaos warrior type.
Tigers and lions are available
Headeosmw?
For the dogs head warriors I'm probably going for a mix of the lancer and eureka ones
Most of the rest will be Pendraken
Headeosmwn
I presume it's these. Nice beastmen types.
Home>10mm-12mm FANTASY>Old>Haedusmen
They look a bit too squat and oversized for my needs
I think we can fill most of those:
Banshee - Undead Wraiths, or Dark Elf Witch Elves, or possibly something from the Undead Necromancer pack?
BlackDog - How big does this need to be?
Big Cat/Cat of palug - Savage Beasts in the Monsters range: https://www.pendraken.co.uk/10mm-12mm-fantasy-monsters
Dog Head Warriors and Champion - Our Egyptian Mythology are dog-headed but obviously wearing Egyptian kit!
Dragon - We can supply the dragons from the Dragonmen range.
Dwarves - Hill Dwarves.
Ghost - In a sheet ghost or writhing wraith type thing? The Undead Wraiths might work here too.
Giant - In the Monsters range again: https://www.pendraken.co.uk/10mm-12mm-fantasy-monsters
Giant boar - We've got Boars in the Woolly Beasts: https://www.pendraken.co.uk/10mm-12mm-fantasy-monsters
Giant Wolf - We've got a few wolves, there's the smaller ones in the Goblin range, the medium ones in the Dire Wolves: https://www.pendraken.co.uk/fantasy-eldritch-vampires-dire-wolves-fan-vam7 and then some massive ones that we've never done anything with.
Giant Stag - No giant ones unfortunately, just the regular one in the Deer/Stag pack in our Animals.
Hobgoblins - There's some of these in the Old ranges, depending on how you want them to look: https://www.pendraken.co.uk/10mm-12mm-fantasy-old
Serpent - Coiled snake or sea hydra type? Coiled snakes are in the Dungeon section, or there's the ones breaking ground in the Monsters section again.
Otherworld Warriors and Champion - What kind of style are you looking for here?
Tormented soul - Wretched ghoul or an author with writers block?! Wraiths would be my go-to again here.
Wow you've done alot of the work for me :)
Over on Facebook folks are suggesting Pendraken have taken over the Leven Miniatures Range. Is this true? When I try and visit their site, all I get is 'server not found'.
No doubt Leon will make an announcement in due course if the rumours are correct.
Leven make some very nice stuff, I can personally vouch for a fair few different pieces from their ranges ;)

Nope, that was just one person who'd got confused with us stocking the Battlescale stuff. It shows how easily rumours start though!
