Title: Are trains driving you off the rails?
Post by: Sunray on 27 July 2023, 12:01:41 PM
Train in warfare have been a factor right up to Korea in the 1950s.
Some even became weaponised.
The issue for the gamer is how to portray the train on the track- which is already mounted on the table.

In the course of setting up a 6mm table, I may have cracked it:

The track is layed with 6mm rail from Paper Terrain- stuck to 2mm MDF or plastic card base. I secured these with small pieces of Blu Tack

The rolling stock are mounted/based on 6mm model track - MDF, IM, or H&R.
Key- the visible track bases are painted to blend with Paper Terrain shades.
You can mount each wagon/carriage/engine individually or by train.
Trains can move freely. I reduced the number of bends in the track as some of my models are in 5" long trains.

I scaled the Junior Generals stuff down for 6mm. Irregular do cast ones, and if you can find it thet is a track planning set from Hornby which is roughly 1/280th.

Why not use the Heroics & Ros material?

I used the track planning set from (probably) Hornby which is roughly 1/280th, as it was free :D

The plastic Hornby is now like hen's teeth,as you now have an App to plan your track.

I use any metal or plastic for basing byrolling stock.  The key is in the optics of having the paper track underneath.

A few years ago ASDA were selling toy trains - steams trains from (to my untutored eye) the 1860s and the 1930/40s. I bought quite a few and used some here in my derailed rail gun game.
