Title: Chieftains and FV432s coming soon!
Post by: Leon on 26 July 2023, 09:54:32 PM
We've got the next batch of modern vehicles ready and this time we're looking at the Brits with Chieftains and FV432s on the way.

We've gone to town a bit on the 432s with Mk1 and Mk2-1 options of each version, including APC, 81mm mortar, Wombat, engineer, command and Ranger.  We've also got the FV433 'Abbot', FV436 and FV438, all of which shared the same base chassis.

Following on from those are the Chieftains!  From Cold War Europe to the Iraq Wars, these are still in use around the world today and should prove a popular addition.

There's also a random SU-57 hiding in here too, as a quick addition to the WWII Soviet ranges...

These are all going into master moulds this week and we'll get straight onto the production moulds early next month.

Looking good - fully embracing 3D printed vehicle masters, I see. Makes a lot of sense for vehicles where there are known measurements and variants can be pretty easily created from the base model.

Look great!

What's the FV432 'Ranger' variant? Is that a missile battery on the roof? And a towed . . . something?

I have to say that one of these releases is not like then others.

Then I have to say "wow!  =P~ "

Rather sadly, but probably not unexpectedly, I'm really excited to see the Abbott.

Look good but the Mk 2 Cheify is a bit of a dead end, very few used for troop trials only. Similar with the Mk3 - first major production version is the Mk 5. Dont think there is a Mk 4 for some reason.

Mk 4 was a prototype for Israel?

Yes, they were taken out for trials, and the Israelis sent our blokes home minus the tanks.

Hmmm . . . thought the Mk.2, Mk.3 and Mk.5 were all production versions, and served in the frontline? Every mark later is an upgrade of one of these.

Sort of, 50 Mk 2 for trials Mk 3 production, Mk 5 main version...

Hi

When I first joined my squadron (Ajax, 2RTR, Münster) in September 1974 I'm pretty sure we had a mixture of Chieftain Mk2's and Mk3's (and a Centurion ARV in the Light Aid Detachment)! The Mk2's I seem to remember were fairly quickly replaced with up graded models but I'm pretty sure the Mk3's were with us for some time.

Cheers Paul

:-bd  But need the FV432 with the Fox turret for that mind.

It's definitely a much easier route to new masters, we can resize if needed, tweak them if we want, and print replacements if there's any problems during moulding. There is a cost implication though, these new 3D designs are coming in at 30%-50% more expensive than our traditional modellers.

16 different FV432s and of course we're missing one!  It shouldn't be too hard to add that turret though, so we'll have a chat with the designer.  Does anyone know if that turret was put on the Mk 1 or the Mk 2-1 hull?

Mk 1 Hulls as far as I can remember, 2LI had them in 74/5 when I did a 2 week attatchment.

True - but Leon does the Fox - so a pretty straight forward conversion (I suspect)  :)

The Chieftain Mk.1 and Mk.2 are getting mixed up.
Production numbers are:
40x Mk.1
300+ x Mk.2 (1967)
500+ x Mk.3 (1970)
2x Mk.4 for Israel (1974)
100x Mk.5 (1973)
Mk.6 are Mk.2 rebuilt to Mk.5 standard, so ~ 300 (c1978) with IINF in theory
Mk.7 are Mk.3 rebuilt to Mk.6 standard, so anything from a few-500 (c1979 with IINF)
Mk.8 is a Mk.5 with minor upgrades, so maybe 100 (c1979)
Mk.6, 7 and 8 were all upgraded to Mk.9 from 1983, so from 400 to 900, with FSAPDS.
Mk.10 Stiibrew I haven't found conversion numbers (1987)
Mk.11 Stillbrew x324 converted (from 1987)

Some data from Robert Griffin Chieftain MBT, Photosniper 7 book

Why is Pendraken like a tribe whose leaders have all been killed?
No Chieftains.

Why is Pendraken like a nunnery?
No Abbots

Why is Pendraken like a Glasgow Celtic crowd?
No Rangers

How is Pendraken different from arson in a playground?
No Swingfire

Why is Pendraken like "The Fauna and Flora of Micronesia as discovered by Captain J W Cribbage in his voyage on the HMS Shakespeare, 1821-1822" (Originally published privately)?
No Wombats

Technically, this is Sunray's fault. He started the rumour at Christmas. So I've been very good for eight months and, most importantly, I have a gift voucher!

I understand (as does anyone who has seen him dancing) that the Dark Lord moves in mysterious ways, and I appreciate there are all sorts of technical and scheduling issue to be overcome, but I have a gift voucher.

Finally, and perhaps most compellingly, I have to mention thatI have ... a flippin' ... gift ... voucher, and there are only 23 months left on it.   :(

Good news on the Chieftains, I've prepped those and put them in the moulding room today ready for Dave to get on with them next week.  Sadly we've had to reprint some of the FV432s though, as the rear hatch panels were a bit too thin and we were getting miscasts from the master mould.

I'm away for a few days next week but I'll get the Chieftains released as soon as I get back.
