Title: Rangers of Shadow Deep in 10mm
Post by: Corso on 07 July 2023, 04:27:57 PM

Played this alot when Solo gaming was the only option. It's miniature agnostic with a moderate miniature count when you start but with all the expansions and great fan made scenarios it soon gets daunting in 28mm. So with my recent switch to 10mm I though why not try and finish what I started.

For those unfamiliar, with the game you start by creating a Ranger and his companions. You get some build points and choices of recruits to make them your own. I've not settled on a back story but here is my crew.

We have the aforementioned Ranger and crew made up of a Rogue, Guardsman, Archer and two Men at arms

There are other more specialised option but they cost and you start with limited points. I've learned numbers make a difference when you begin.

The rest of this thread will be me geting them ready for their first outing

I'm planning to down scale everything using the old switch from inches to CM trick so the max board area I'll need will be about 30cm squared if I always deploy on the table edge, perfect portable adventure.

It's on my list but I havn't picked a copy up yet, I have several of his A Song of... games and really like them,S&S looks like it deals with Solo gaming really well and from the monster cards there are alot available from Pendraken so I'll be getting to it at some point.

I chose RoSD as its what got me back into gaming after a 20 year hiatus

Cheers.

Several of the scenarios require a small camp, either as the start point or for a bandit/knoll camp.

Thought about making one myself but then found a nice looking set on the alternative armies site. Thought at 15mm it might be a tad oversized, was I wrong

Frankly it's too small for anything other than the halfling, can't believe they sell it as a 15mm piece. It'll do for now but will be revisiting my DIY plan once I get some blue stuff.

One thing I am wondering is if their 15mm is undersized can I use some of their monsters...

The lizard men in particular look rather cool

One of my favourite scenarios; Broken Stairs requires bug spawn points

Knocked this up as a prototype

Looks OK but needs some bugs  :D

Magister Militum 15mm Trolls. Work perfect with 10mm in my opinion.

Alternative armies serpent, and magister militum orcs. The orcs are a tad too big, so either those act as ogres or go with Copplestone orcs.

Alternative armies cockatrice, demon and a lizardman. The lizardman I could see working, lizardpeople can be a tad bigger?

Pendraken used to do a swarm of rats - and a pied piper - in their fantasy Beggar range. Not currently listed, but may be still available. Leon?

You're figures are terrific. Love the corpse markers. Did you make them, or are they bought like that?

I'd rather have individual rats, I'm probably going to get them printed to the size I need

I made the markers, just cut the bases of minis - ones that are charging work best, benging the feet down makes a visual difference too

Not much to update this weekend

Did get my first game in to remind myself of the rules, used way too many proxies to take photos but did realise my party needed a rework

My Ranger held up OK but the group needed a bit more range power so after a stats rework here they are

Ranger,Rogue, Guardsman and Archer remain but swapped out one of the men at arms for a Tracker armed with a bow and staff

For Oathmark? We've had all the book expansions we're getting, but Joe throws occasional stuff on his blog, the couple of magazines for his stuff have bits and bobs, and there might be something similar to the Halfling lists eventually maybe?

I'd just run them as Orcs & Giblins though, tbh. Maybe swap Wild Charge or Charge for bad terrain movement.

I've done a similar thing with one of the children's old blackboards - gaming mat glued to one side, printed urban landscape to the other for a 37cm x 27cm playing area. Very useful.

Although I've just had a look, and some of the urban tiles have half un-glued themselves :(.

Again, yours looks great.

If you want to design games for a living you better be prolific AND have a day job :D

Yeah, he has a great and consistent output.

Oathmark is pretty much baked and done now, rules wise - main book, three supplements and a couple web releases; there's some little articles trickling out in his/Osprey's zines, but nothing major.

Northstar are still chugging through the 28mm kits to catch up though so it looks like it's chugging along nicely.

Corso, I kind of fancy Silver Bayonet but so many games. So little time...

Silver Bayonet was fun, I played through the missions in the book at 28mm scale, finished it and moved on there is a supplement I might take a look at it again in either 20 or 10mm

Thanks, the Tracker companion carries a staff and Bow, staff was an easy conversion, the bow I took from a 3d print as no-one makes 10mm accessories and I didn't have any green stuff

Paladin (retired) does that mean from the campaign or from being a paladin?

Good work btw

Retired Paladin, couldn't find the right full plate mail figure with a 2 handed sword so  usiblng him as a proxy figure, the retired back story felt right

I have a few, but they are a bit too small against the fantasy stuff to be a main character

Yep have one of the knights

But the Paladin character in ROSD calls for a 2 handed sword

One of the RoSD scenarios requires a farmhouse

It's dimentions and make up is quite specific and since I haven't been able to find anything suitable I thought I'd scratch build one and show the working out :)

Basic layout

I may be looking at it wrong, but the basic layout doesn't look to match the map  :-/

It's reversed but otherwise the same?

8x6 room next to a 6x6 room

Havn't marked the doors and windows yet

Being reversed it didn't match the map ;)

Not sure what you mean?

Once it has the walls doors ect. It should work?

Not been up to much with this project

I have added to the Dungeon clutter used for some of the scenarios but also useful for when pendrakens rules get their re-release

Thanks

Worked on a few more bits

Added some detail to these shelves

Also needed some buildings, unfortunately I couldn't find any in 10mm with interiors so I added the fencing as a proxy

It's enough room for 2-3 figures
