I painted some 20mm and 25mm figures quite a few years ago but I packed it all in.
I feel like I want to have a go again and paint up the armies for the battle of Flodden, so I'll be asking for rule and basing recommendations.

When I last had a go I joined in other peoples wargames so I can't remember which rules were used.
I do have one rule book 'Battle' by Charles Grant for WWII gaming, I bought it as a kid and can't seem to let it go.
Not a big fan of commercial rules. However, I have a few of the Osprey sets and they're a good read and quite inspiring. Flodden would fall between Lion Rampant and the Pikemans Lament.

I think I'd suggest Lion Rampant over Pikeman's Lament for Flodden. PL feels just a bit later in its character - but the rulesets have a lot in common. Both are aimed at single based 28mm figures, but can work pretty easily with multi-based 10s.
But I think I'd be suggesting Irregular Wars over the Rampant series - I think its a better game, its focused around this era, and is aimed at smaller multi-based figures.

For bigger battle stuff it might be worth looking at Warlord Pike and Shotte. They're generally pretty good all purpose rules that do cover the period you're looking at. I don't play Warlord rules much myself anymore but they are a solid starter set and generally give a decent game, only issue is because they are all purpose they can be a bit bland for specific conflicts. I'm not aware of any specifically for Flodden though, it's an interesting one as it sits right on the cusp of Medieval and Renaissance. Possibly some War of the Roses era rules might suit?
For 10mm basing it generally breaks into two camps - multiple bases per unit or a single base per unit.
For multiple bases for the period 40x20 or 40x40 are pretty common , whereas single bases 60x40, 80x40 or 100x50 all work pretty well. It depends what you want, i.e. do you want to be able to represent different formation and statuses using multiple bases or have something easy to move as a single base and allowing a bit more freedom with how you arrange the troops.
Formation changes tend to be less prevalent pre-18th Century or so, meaning you can generally get away with one or two bases for a unit and just use a marker to indicate as needed, but tastes vary. Most rules seem to be fairly agnostic of basing, so long as both sides are similar.
Bloody Barons from Peter Pig gets a good rep from friends and is set in The Wars of the Roses. I've never played it but the set up and playsheets are available on the website so you can get an idea of what is likely to be involved.

Welcome to the forum. You could also look at "To the strongest" if you are happy with grid based systems. With that you can make a unit whatever size you like, as long as it fits in the grid.
In general 40 x 20 size bases seem to be fairly generic with most rule systems now.
