I am feeling the urge to switch up a few scales and see what I can do with some 25mm SF figures - but I am stalled a bit on a strategy for basing. In particular these guys (& gals) could be in a variety of interior & exterior settings (it is SF, so rocky, jungle, ice plain, Martian desert, spaceship... you get the drift). The idea of a vacc suited guy on a green-flocked base walking down a corridor just doesn't work! Best I can come up with is some sort of flat finish & neutral colour - but perhaps that just looks bad everywhere...
I was hoping the group mind here could provide some suggestions, a bit of brain-storming, etc to see if there is another way forward?
As usual I am probably over-analysing and would be better to get started - but my rationale for SF is that this counts as research :)
Cheers,
Pete
Clear acrylic?
Example here (https://atomicfloozy.com/2023/01/27/taji-mbutzi/). I think it works.
Paint neutral grey.
I've gone with a neutral steel grey for most of my 20mm sci-fi stuff. I reckon that covers tarmac, space station and starship floors, moons, asteroids and planet destroying battle stations. Not so good for desert or jungle worlds! I have a couple of hundred figures painted and based, If acrylic bases had been an option when I started, back in the late 80's, I'd probably have gone for them but I don't aim to rebase all those figures!
If I ever get round to 'doing' my massive collection of 25mm Naps and ACW... I think that I will go for the old 1960s green bases, without flock or scenics. For some reason, that just looks 'right' to me! OLD !!!
10mm... painted sand, or Flock...maybe odd tuft of veg or twig.
Thanks for the replies.
I do like the effect of the clear acrylic bases (at least as executed by a first-rate painter on 30mm figs!) However all my 25mm SF have cast bases and it is a bit too much effort/risk for me to think about removing them. Also, echoing HH, the look is a bit too "modern" for me. I think the neutral approach (exact colour TBD) will be my plan A. Time to pick some colours & paint some washers :)
Cheers,
Pete

Yeah, they don't work with cast bases sadly.
