We're not far away from Salute now, are any of our Forum members going along this year? After the rather reduced event in Nov '21 I'm hoping for a busier one this time.
Sorry Leon no. Too far, too awkward, too expensive, too noisy and I'd rather spend the money buying stuff from you. :D
Two hundred quid or so for a day in London is a bit much and that's just getting there and back!
Hope to see you at Carronade and Claymore though.
Really what Guy has already said for me. I used to combine it with dropping my wife off at friends for the day, but honestly I've never really enjoyed the show, which felt like some games dropped in amongst trade stands. I'd rather go to Partizan and my 'local' show of Colours.
Hi Leon
Sorry, no. I used to go regularly when it was held in Kensington/Olympia but really do not like the current location.
Cheers Paul
Presently planning to go, though it's a bit health dependent.
Edward
What they said.
Although further, its actually easier for me to get to visit the stand at the Newbury or Farnborough events and even better if I can organise a combined why dont you visit the "in-laws tribes" while I just... to Vapnartak or Border reivers. The latter type of meet is also on a human (10mm?) scale compared to the Salute mob event. Heck I even talked to strangers although they struggle with my soft southern tones.
I'll be there, but only because I am going to help out Simon Miller with his colossal Ipsus 28mm game. Otherwise, all the factors everyone else has mentioned would keep me away! Oh, together with the totally inadequate lighting and the expansion of the emissions zone to include everywhere within the M25!
Major problem - it's in London :d :d
I'll be there.
I shall be there, hopefully to pick up a few bits and pieces from Leon.
It is actually really easy for me to reach; Overground into Liverpool Street and three stops on the Elizabeth Line.
I regularly attended Warfare, which I found a really nice show, but missed it out last year due to the sheer difficulty of getting there. Whilst I drive, I prefer to use public transport and it was unclear from the publicity which of the halls was being used and which gate you needed to use if you were on foot (the organisers seemed to have assumed that it would be drivers only). It appeared to be a hefty walk from any of the stations and that could double if you chose the wrong one and found you were at the wrong gate.
Don't mind London but Salute is too difficult to get to and would mean leaving Cambridge at the crack of sparrow fart to get there. I also don't like the venue very much - too large and cavernous in my view. It is easier to drive down to Newbury for Colours the day before, spend a pleasant evening in a nearby pub, have a decent meal with a bottle of something red, and a leisurly drive to the venue in the morning, all for not much more than the price as a frenetic trip down to London and back on the day. No contest really.
Good to hear a few folks will be there, make sure to pop by and say hello!

We found that ourselves, even in the van! The venue staff seemed to have completely different info to the organisers, so we turned up at the entrance we were told to use only to be redirected back out and around to a different gate. Hopefully they get that figured out for this year.
I shall be attending via the DLR - not been to Salute since it was in the old hall in Central London c.33 years ago. It will be interesting to see what has changed :D

The dominance of appalling ancient rules with little basis in reality and little in the way of fun.

Not sure what point is being made here? I would welcome enlightenment!

Neither am I!
A referance to MR barker and WRG, probably 6TH

Very nearly, but I was thinking particularly of 7th edition

Still not enlightened. How is this relevant to Salute 2023?
I think its suggesting a change in the 33 years since a forum member last attended a Salute.
But 7th did not include 10mm as a scale (I just checked my copy!) so it HAD to go :D
Sorry I can't face going into London from the South Island, I'll see you at Colours...
I quite liked the 6th edition, 7th not so much.
A lot of the classifications used in games today seem to stem from the WRG rules of the past.
An old friend once commented that playing in competitions with the old WRG rule sets (7th and its predecessors) was like sitting 6 4 hour legal exams in 3 days, and at the end your brain hurt.
Having sat my legal exams in the seventies I can assure you that wargaming with many of the rule sets around then (and WRG weren't the worst) were far more headache inducing.

I recommend WARFARE but it is annoying that the rail station is a mile and a half away and needs a taxi or a much longer walk than it used to be; otherwise excellent, especially if a car driver. I seem to do SALUTE every three years, despite the venue; this year will have to be there in helping with a demo game ... and to pick up from the PENDRAKEN stand.

I haven't been to Warfare for a while and it is worth consideration, but I'd still drive down the night before. By train on the day, I think, means going into London Kings Cross, tube to Waterloo and then to Farnborough. Just not an option really.
