Title: And the Winners Are!
Post by: Leon on 08 March 2023, 06:00:49 PM
After a month of entries and seven days of voting, it's time to announce the winners of the 2023 Pendraken Painting Competition!  We've had some excellent entries this year and some of the closest voting that we've seen in a while too.

As usual the voting was done by our friendly Forum members who each had 5 votes to cast per category, so without further ado...

The Winners of the 2023 Pendraken Painting Competition are:

Foot - Pre-20th C. (35 entries)

Once again this category had the highest number of entries and we had two entries fighting it out for that first place slot...

1st place: shrimproll9's SYW Prussians - wins £50 Pendraken voucher!

2nd place: streetgang's Revolutionary French grenadiers - wins £25 Pendraken voucher!
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2aGQc_tRZFNhUfwCFeu3kkIRELcl01_GrXFszz-wDspaTpYNeUTZ-1SbSXOyZpWoQLKO63uzwpH62IjsnBfI5lKRb_wd5OG8w6eEF0GY7mhbRxFME98gcHV5bjyGEaKptY3VJadQhq4KliHHwWm0B3IrVAiVfa_t_BCx-cMRT8V7o_IiUhsJRrGiljg/s1584/Grenadiers.jpg)

Foot - 20th C. (14 entries)

This category always has a lower number of entries but at a high standard, so there was some fierce competition here.  Three entries pulled ahead at the start of the voting with the winner pulling ahead in the final couple of days...

1st place: Forez42's Soviet infantry - wins £50 Pendraken voucher!

2nd place: Maraviglia's Defenders of France - wins £25 Pendraken voucher!

Mounted (21 entries)

This category had a good mix of votes across several entries but we had two clear leaders right up until this afternoon!  In the end there was only one vote in it...

1st place: shrimproll9's SYW Prussian hussars - wins £50 Pendraken voucher!

2nd place: DHautpol's 1695 Mousquetaires de la Garde - wins £25 Pendraken voucher!

Vehicle (33 entries)

We had a lot more entries in this category this year, but I think this is one of those occasions where some people made too many entries and split their own vote, causing them to lose out on a potential 1st place!

1st place: Maraviglia's Napoleonic limbers - wins £50 Pendraken voucher!

2nd place: Federico's Matador trucks - wins £25 Pendraken voucher!

Fantasy & Sci-Fi (22 entries)

We had a lot more entries in this category this year and it was great to see some interesting conversions on our figures too.  However it was completely dominated by two entries that were at level pegging for almost the full 7 days of voting.  This morning they were equal but by 6pm we had a winner...

1st place: Draconian's Xenos - wins £50 Pendraken voucher!

2nd place: Forez42's Bloodbowl team - wins £25 Pendraken voucher!

Open - Single Base (29 entries)

There was a good mix of entries here from right across history and our ranges, so it was really nice to see.  Quite a few entries were in the running during the week but by the end we had a clear winner and a very close 2nd place!

1st place: Sotaisho's Republican Romans - wins £50 Pendraken voucher!

2nd place: paulr's ECW standard - wins £25 Pendraken voucher!

Open - Army! (20 entries)

We had another close one here with six entries fighting it out for the winner slots over the week.  By the end there was only one vote between 2nd and 3rd...

1st place: streetgang's Revolutionary French army - wins £50 Pendraken voucher!
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHyiI4asbEt9r3HTY3uOnDez0LrCydoyPrVqi3q5rJ4IPG5egoymYEZleNvGWPfI9syd0Q-rozVv32nSJ1QKjkZvNVPei1EDDZ04dKeixv-H33KLJ_r3ohLjEF8V26yDsmBEw1KOaoLOPCpLGGwqf6DuTuBLKi58yHDOYmFjUZv9Dn3RM_pfdsBbXKYQ/s2251/armee.jpg)

2nd place: KCW's AWI Patriots army - wins £25 Pendraken voucher!

Congratulations to all of our winners!  We'll be announcing the winners on social media and you'll receive an email in the next few days with your prize voucher.  We'll also get your Winner's tags added to your profiles, which is of course the most important thing!

Thank you to everyone who entered for taking the time to take part this year.  The Painting Competition is always one of the highlights of our year and the standard gets higher every time.  We hope you enjoyed it too and your entries will no doubt have inspired others to pick up a brush and get something painted or try and new technique.

Cheers to all the voters, I'd buy a round to you all.
A close call in some categories, maybe next year less entries... it was the enthusiasm of the first time.  :-[
Many compliments to all the winners, very well deserved. Some really great works and a lot of motivation for my next projects.
Hooray!

Well done to all the winners! Excellent work all round.

I think this is an astute observation Federico - if you enter multiple items in a category you are likely to split the vote - I think this can be seen in the vehicle category where you had 3 of your entries score highly, which if those votes had all gone to a single entry you would have easily won! It can be hard, but if you can't pick between two entries, it is likely that the voters will have the same problem resulting in a spread of votes.

This is a difficult one to work out. With every voter having five votes in each category, if you only enter one model, you guarantee that four out of every five votes go to someone else! If you have five entries of pretty even quality, you may get all the votes. If everyone only had one vote, I think your analysis would be accurate, in the current situation, not so sure.

Assuming everybody uses all five votes in each category.  I didn't simply because the photos were too out of focus in some cases to make a judgement.  In some categories I voted only for the ones I could see, which I think was as little as two entries in at least one category.

Awesome work by all winners and most entrants for that matter.

@Leon - can you get one of the wargames mags to publish those winners in the same style they cover shows?  Should boost interest in the scale.

Wow - and thank you! Well done to everybody, what an amazing competition and so many superb entries of such a high quality. Having watched Alien back in the early 80s on an 8mm projector reel projecting onto a wall I must admit a real affection for Draconian's Xenos!
Happy to provide more pictures, @Leon, if that helps with Pendraken sales!

Yes Fred, this is definitely a wise consideration, but would a truck got all the votes of the non posted tank? Anyway I didn't really have a strategy here, I just got mad last summer in painting all my 10mm new toys and wanted to share them. Next year I'll be more focused, work on these results and craft a napoleonic general on a British truck carrying a jacobin alien.

I didn't think in these terms, you actually have a good point Mollinary. But again, the technique and the painting style is the same all over your personal entries, so maybe focusing on your best let's say 2 good works per category is adequate to show your achievements without the spam effect. (Not specifically "you", I'm talking in general).

Congrats to the winners! Some excellent work!

As to how many pieces you enter in each category....it's one, always enter one, no more, and make it damn good!

Already looking forward to next years comp. I'll be looking forward to competing with you all!

Congratulations to all who took part and especially those who were lucky enough to win. I had great plans for this year to put entries in the army, mounted and single figure categories but real life came crashing in. I thought the standard this year was higher still, with many entries possibly undone by photographic skills rather than painting. Many thanks to Leon for organising and providing the generous prizes 😁👍

To make Orc's team, I've taken a gobellin reference : Warriors (Fan-Gob1). I've cut the weapons and make helmet, gloves and shoulders with putty.

About Men's team, I've used for the linemen a Sci-Fi reference : Marine power armour (SFH4)
The pitcher, it's an American korean's war : summer, throwing grenade (KUS14). The blitzer and catcher are diffrents refences of french and russians soldiers of WWII. As the Orcs, I've used putty to make ball, helmet, gloves and shoulders. But, for the helmet grille, it's make in fishing line.
For the Ogre, no modification, it's an ogre reference (Fan-Mon5).
