Title: 10mm Maori/Hawaiians?
Post by: Cornish Crusade on 31 January 2023, 12:52:15 PM
Afternoon chaps & chapettes, it's a bit of an odd request, but I don't suppose anyone is aware of any manufacturers of 10mm Maori, Hawaiian or Polynesian minis? Fancied turning my hand to some Islander warfare, both tribal and colonial, which is well catered to in 28mm & 15mm, but I'm unaware of anything in 10mm!

Of course, if there's an item or two from the Pendraken range that would stand in well for the Voyager peoples, then I'd love to know which ones I can purchase!

My "go to" for shieldless, barely clothed tribals is

Home / 10mm ANCIENTS / Classical (600-220BC) / Indian
Forest tribesmen with bow/javelin, Pack contains 30 figures (2 poses), £6.00/£5.00 (ex. VAT)

Though my recollection is that the Hawaiians, at least, used slings rather than bows. If javelin armed is all you need Pendraken will do special orders of specific figures for a very modest increase in cost.

Some of the Aztec commoners might suit, though they all come with round shields which I know weren't really used for islander warfare. Zulus could fit in for shielded troops, as I think some long shields were used, though not particularly common.
Aztec commoner with sling (also available with bows):(https://files.ekmcdn.com/89204c/images/-n-azt9-n-commoners-with-sling-15--1300-p.jpg?w=360&h=9999&v=FE4E48D2-8A62-4AFA-A590-9C5487B85585)

Zulus, four of them...(https://files.ekmcdn.com/89204c/images/-n-zc5-n-zulus-without-headdress--2739-p.jpg?w=360&h=9999&v=2262021-112102)

Some possible wild card options are from the bronze age era lines from Newline and Magister Militum, for instance, Newline Lybians could be fudged with a bit of clipping and paint:

Newline, MM and Irregular all do Zulu lines as well which could add some variety, and there might be other "tribal" style troops amongst their other bronze age and classical offerings. Egyptian axemen maybe.

Though these are all very much proxy options that would probably require a bit of fudging and looking at with a squint to make them fit.

One of the main issues will be the use of clubs rather than bladed weapons, though some of that could just be a case of painting the weapons in such a way as many swords, slings and axes could just as easily be a club with a thick enough layer of paint!

Biblical "Libyan" javelinmen would be a good proxy - no shields, largely naked (although some have cloaks). The Libyans also had archers but, as mentioned earlier, you really want slingers and not bowmen.
Good luck,
Geoff

For the few shielded Hawaiian types the Ancient Indian javelin infantry with shield might do, though my memory is that the Hawaiian ones were rectangular rather than arched on top.

Very good! I have a pack of them in need of painting to fight under Memnon in the Trojan War when I get around to it...

Hello CC

For colonial types you could look at the Rugga Rugga tribesmen with muskets:-

Generic enough to cover the islands.

Cheers
