Title: The Last Kingdom
Post by: Sunray on 25 January 2023, 04:26:28 PM
Greetings Arselings

I have been enjoying The Last Kingdom and the adventures of Lord Uhtred on Netflix - can the forum recommed a set of rules that is good for this late 9th Century Saxon/Dane Shieldwall era at skirmish level?

I loved the Cornwell novels and they translate well onto the screen.

Blood Eagle, (Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare)
Dux Britanarium (sp?), (Too Fat Lardies)
Dux Bellorum, (Osprey blue book)
Saga, would probably cover it.

I've only played the first two and quite like those systems so have enjoyed those games.

Hi

Funnily enough I am currently working my way through the TV series as well.

Regarding rules, you might want to look at Ravenfeast from the Little Wars TV people you can download them from their site for free:

There is also a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=macRgkAACBQ

QuoteDux Bellorum, (Osprey blue book)

Good game, but not a skirmish.

As T13A says, Ravenfeast from Little Wars TV is a good starting place. If you don't like it, you've only invested some time.

Thanks Nobby !   ;D  Very amusing! At least the Danes were not in horned helmets!

And a big thanks to ALL who facilitated with suggestions and links.  The Little Wars TV is an amazing resource.  We must get these boys into 10mm!!
A great shop window for figures.

Figures: My Arseling venture into the late 10th Century will be in 10mm - My first stop will be with Leon as Pendraken have an excellent Dark Ages range. I am also aware of Irregular and Magister Miltrum figures.

One possible proxy range Copplestone with a fantasy Lord of the Rings style range and "Horse tribe" infanty, mounted and "Fellowship of the Ring style heroes". I see a few that would proxy for Uhtred, Alfred,Guthrum, Aethelflaed et al.

I will also need a few buildings - a mix of late Roman (for Winchester) and Norse Halls, stockade type walls. Total Battle have an excellent Saxon 10mm range and Leven (although 6mm) have walls and gates at 45 mm high which could I think be bloged up to work with 10mm.

Longships! SMER have Drakkar oseberg in 1/180 Scale for around £5. Via Amazon. Any other models out there in this price range??

Anything I have missed?

PS - its funny how a TV series or movie can inspire a need to get figures on the tabletop. My wife was watching the series with me and commented "you will be wanting to wargame this at some point??" She knows me too well.

"Ah,well done that man. I wondered how long it would take for one of you young officers would spot that"   ;D

Seriously amazing resource. And a great plug for Pendraken. Can we pin a link to the painting section of the forum?

I have certainly enjoyed the TV...some headgear, etc. jarred, but! (What IS it with costume designers?). And the read... although it was getting a bit 'long'!
Personally, I preferred Cornwell's Grail trilogy, but that is Me.
Wish the ACW books had continued... but, given current attidudes, that ain't likely. :(

Me too, I thought the 'Starbuck' books were some of his best.
