1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Black Powder II with a few tweaks.
2) What armies were confronted? - Red vs Blue mid-19thC Europe
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Pretty much, but a bit rusty after the Xmas break.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Solo.
6) What went well? - The Red cavalry making some game saving charges, all rather cinematic.
7) What could have been improved? - A few schoolboy errors on my part relating to the rules.
Quote6) What went well? - The Red cavalry making some game saving charges, all rather cinematic.
If that's the case Steve then perhaps you should be playing some Russian Civil War games 😉
Cheers,

Very good Geoff ;D !
Hi
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Age of Honor (SYW)
2) What armies were confronted? - Prussians v Russians, Austrians and Saxons
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Pretty much, although it has been a while.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - Rules wise, they moved along pretty smoothly and give a good feel for the period (at brigade level) . My Prussian Grenadier brigade will be getting a few barrels of what they fancy with their rations!
7) What could have been improved? - Just finding details of an 'additional' rule that I knew about but couldn't find the anywhere.
Cheers Paul
Hi
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - To the Strongest!.
2) What armies were confronted? - Assyrians v Egyptians
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, only had to check a couple of things.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Two.
6) What went well? - Just a very enjoyable game, first outing for both armies.
7) What could have been improved? - Dice throwing on both sides! The Egyptians losing two out of three of their generals.
Cheers Paul
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Black Powder II with Glory Hallelujah
2) What armies were confronted? - North & South - ACW
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Pretty much, but a bit rusty after the Xmas break.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 3 first night then 4 the second
6) What went well? - Game flowed smoothly and good to be playing again after Xmas
7) What could have been improved? - The South's right flank collapsed abruptly about halfway through the second night leading to the South conceeding the field and us with time on our hands
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Irregular Wars.
2) What armies were confronted? - Portuguese (Goa) against Bijapur Sultanate (Mughal list)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, through it was alsmot 2 months since the last game.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - Rules behaved well, and my newly drafted scenarion brought some "mission" focus to the game.
7) What could have been improved? - A little confusion here and there.
Bigger story:
Westmarcher and I have played several Irregular Wars games in an Indian Ocean setting.
We both felt the default "Set up and fight" led to some slow games where terrain was dense and victory conditions were absent.
I offered to create a booklet of scenarios, which I completed just before Christmas.
This was our first outing using a scenario.
The scenarios introduce:
* A map, saving time during game setup.
* Clear victory conditions.
* Army strengths and breakpoints that vary depending on the mission.
This scenario saw the Portuguese occupying a part complete fort across the river from Goa island.
The Bijapur Sultanate (owners of the Island until rudely interrupted) sent a force to capture the fort.
A relief force was sent from Goa.
The two clashed in the vicinity of the fort.
The scenario asked a few questions that stretched the traditional strengths of each force.
Bijapur's quality troops are mostly mounted archers (some armoured with lances, others light), these are unlikely to storm a fortress alone.
This means selecting some of the lowly foot, and maintaining a balance between close assault troops and missiles.
Portugal's major choice was whether to pack the fort with shooters, or close fighters.
The former to defend by shooting, the latter to resist a close assault.
In the end the Portuguese selected a close fighting garrison and a mainly firearm equipped relief force.
Bijapur's selection wasn't favoured by the dice, but included elephant artillery, a company of matchlockmen, two of mercenary spearmen and several more village levies.
The shooters combined with static horse archery to pin the garrison, and the levies performed above expectation against the Portuguese shooters.
The relief force was repelled and the fortress captured.
Victory to Sultan Westmarcher.

Sounds a great game. I'm a big fan of Irregular Wars - but we do tend to end up just playing the basic 'fight' scenario. So good work to create some more scenarios, especially ones that force the players to mix things up a bit
Hi
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - To the Strongest!.
2) What armies were confronted? - Classical Indians v Macedonians (Under some fella called Alex.. something or other).
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Four.
6) What went well? - Great game, both fun and interesting. My Indian longbows taking out the enemy skirmishers (good dice throwing on my part) and then managing to disorder some of the Macedonian pike blocks, even my elephants managed to be useful this time.
7) What could have been improved? - Really can't think of anything.

Hi
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Live Free or Die (AWI)
2) What armies were confronted? - Brits v Rebels, Battle of Harlem Heights, from the scenario booklet (2nd time but this time against an opponent).
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Pretty much, although it has been a while. Still some ambiguities in the main rules v the scenarios but nothing major.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - Game moved along at a pace.
7) What could have been improved? - Not the rules as such it's just if you stick to the scenario is is virtually impossible for forces that arrive later in the game to get into action given the time limits.
Cheers Paul
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Rebels and Patriots (Osprey)
2) What armies were confronted? - Loyal British Vs Rebellious colonists in the American War of Independence.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, I had prepared thoroughly with three passes through the text and four YouTube videos (two good, two appalling).
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No, but we had a very long interval.
5) How many players were in the game? - Two
6) What went well? - Decisive outcomes, and we developed our tactics as the game progressed.
7) What could have been improved? - There was a distinct risk of the game ending in two turns, through the dice prevented that form happening.
Off to Westmarcher's for a game or Rebels and Patriots.
He prepared an interesting table, with patches of cover and open spaces, a road and river crossed at a ford.
He commanded a sizeable, through partly green force of Colonials seeking to scout the area.
The British deployed three line and two light platoons (?) in a W formation to resist this incursion.
All figures were Pendraken, so we were confident they would fight well
The colonial skirmishing rifle fire routed two British platoons almost before they could load their muskets, and sent a patrol of light cavalry down a flank to threaten the rear.
The confusion seized their troops, several units filing to activate, providing the British time to pull back a damaged unit buttress a flank and shift the reserve to resist the cavalry.
A close range British volley, with the first fire bonus, tore the American commander's unit asunder; killing the officer and causing an immediate rout.
Loss of the officer required all his remaining units to test morale, and three of five suffered a failure of some kind.
Indiscipline among the green militia proved a liability.
This caused a lull in the battle, withdrawl of the flanking cavalry and time for the British to re-shuffle their line.
The Americans had scouted one objective of four, and the British were prepared to sacrifice another, falling back to a rearward defensive position.
But luck took a hand.
The river delayed the Americans seizing a second objective and fire form a previously worsted unit deterred any advance on their right flank.
The leading unit advanced form the left, but blundered into the beaten zone of two almost intact British units.
Desultory fire form either side saw some American Skirmishers driven off, which caused an overall morale collapse.
A low scoring win for the British with a heavy butcher's bill for either side.
The rules work well, but it is best to not grow too attached to a favourite unit.
They are quite brittle in the face of enemy shooting.
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Wing scale Volley & Bayonet
2) What armies were confronted? - Loyal British & Hessians vs Rebellious colonists in the American War of Independence
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, but a little rusty
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Four
6) What went well? - British and Hessian plan and dice rolls
7) What could have been improved? - American dice rolls
The scenario was a bath tubbed version of Chadds Ford which called for some interesting decisions from the players. After some success in their first round of firing the Americans couldn't buy decent dice. The Hessians and British on the other hand were rolling well above expectations. Except for the 17th Light Dragoons who were roughly handled by some American Militia :-[
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Honours of War
2) What armies were confronted? - Red vs Blue (austrian stats for both)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No.
5) How many players were in the game? - Solo
6) What went well? - The rules gave a great game as always and the result went right down to the wire.
7) What could have been improved? - Nothing really.
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - WRG Infantry & Armour 1925 - 1950.
2) What armies were confronted? - Germans vs Polish 1939.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, even though first time of using them (see below).
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes.
5) How many players were in the game? - Two.
6) What went well? - For a first game using these slightly tweaked rules, the game played well and felt right. Still early days though.
7) What could have been improved? - As these are a draft set, some tweaks were made as we played. The scenario and movement rates really hampered the German attackers, but we are still learning.
QuoteAll figures were Pendraken, so we were confident they would fight well
I think I have spotted a tiny flaw in an otherwise cunning plan...
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Big Battle DBA
2) What armies were confronted? -
III/66 Fatimid Egyptian, III/74b Other Seljuq Turkish, IV/6a Syrian vs
IV/1a Komnenan Byzantine, IV/2 Cilician Armenian, IV/7 Early Crusader
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, but a little rusty
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Three
6) What went well? - Early pressure by the Egyptians supported by the Turkish and Syrian cavalry broke the Byzantines. The Armenians and Crusaders with no cavalry opposing them demoralised the Turks and Syrians...
7) What could have been improved? - Not a lot, a very tight game with an interesting twist at the end
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - For King & Parliament
2) What armies were confronted? - Battle of Dungan's Hill 8 August 1647 - Anglo Irish vs Irish Confederates
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Three
6) What went well? - We used this game to test some house rules about using mass pike formations and also to make sure the scenario was balanced enough using the few scenario rules that I thought necessary to translate the unique aspects of the battle onto the table.
The Anglo-Irish were leading 12-4 when we called the game to a halt. Overall we were very happy with both the mass pike rules and the scenario balance. Both sides had their moments, though I must admit to having had a few lucky chit pulls, including a 10,10 combination by one of the Anglo-Irish artillery stands to take out the opposition's sole artillery stand.
7) What could have been improved? - Not a lot, but I will make a couple of changes to the deployments that were suggested after the game as the Redshanks were initally deployed a little optimistically.
Another very enjoyable For King & Parliament game and a challenging scenario :-bd =D> :-bd =D>
Hi
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Test of Resolve (Wars of the Roses).
2) What armies were confronted? - The usual Yorkists v Lancastrians
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - First trial game with these rules.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - Two plus an umpire
6) What went well? - :-\
7) What could have been improved? The way 'melee' units and 'missile' units had to depoly in different formations was verging on the fantasy IMHO. Not keen on the the card activation process e.g. only able to fire your missile troops (e.g. longbowmen) when you happened to pick a particular card.
Cheers Paul
Hi
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - To the Strongest! (Wars of the Roses).
2) What armies were confronted? - The usual Yorkists v Lancastrians
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, although we were trying out some house rules to try to better reflect our understanding of how battles in the WotR were actually fought. This involved changing some of the unit types rather than the rules themselves.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - Two.
6) What went well? - It did feel very much like our reading of how most WotR battles went, i.e. an exchange of missiles then just getting stuck in without much in the way of tactics. But...
7) What could have been improved? Not sure really, as already said above it did indeed feel like a WotR battle but therein was the dilemma, from a wargaming point of view - it all got fairly boring.

Good looking troops Paul :-bd =D> :-bd
Perhaps some terrain would add more complexity/add options and help reduce boredom :-\
A narrower table or some more troops might encourage/enable having some reserves :-\
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - If the Lord Spares Us
2) What armies were confronted? - ANZACs vs Ottomans
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, although it was the first time we have played them in about 3 years, so a bit rusty but by turn 3 we had everything under control.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - errr.....no
5) How many players were in the game? - 4
6) What went well? - The scenario seems to work well so far. It postulates that the ANZACs landed in the flat plains of Sulva Bay rather than the steep ridges of ANZAC Cove and were logistically a bit better prepared to allow the use of horses by the ANZAC mounted rifle units to rapidly expand their bridgehead. The Royal Navy shore bombardment has been going pretty well for the ANZACs so far with two Ottoman infantry companies forced to abandon their entrenchments.
7) What could have been improved? We are playing this over a couple of sessions but so far one of the defending Ottoman battalions has been roughly handled by the Wellington and Otago battalions of the NZ Infantry Brigade. My lower morale Gendarmaire battalion is so far hunkered down behind its wired defences and has only been firing at extreme range.
Next week should be a bit more challenging for the ANZAC players with the arrival of the Turkish reserves and the scenario requirements to exit ANZAC units off the board if they are to be victorious.
Turkish Mountain guns opening fire on the advancing Anzacs does seem a bit unsporting :o ;)
It's only going to get worse as we press forward X_X :-SS

1) Which ruleset did you us in your last game? - BKC4
2) What armies were confronted? - Late war British v Germans
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Eventually towards the end
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - 2 plus me as an umpire
6) What went well? - The game felt 'right'.. it was only a small game, but plenty for both players to do and it flowed nicely.
7) What could have been improved? We could have read the rules better! We got vast swathes of the rules long...only discovered on a subsequent reread. Entirely our fault and were looking to playing again with more insight into how the rules work.
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - MDCC.
2) What armies were confronted? - Grand Duchy of Battenberg vs Friestadt of Schwarzwald. Imagi-nations. Their first outing. All Pendraken from their League of Augsburg and War of Spanish Succession ranges
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - I wrote them so had some insight into how they'd play!
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes. First playtest version using armies only just big enough to play.
5) How many players were in the game? - 2, myself giving explanations to a friend profoundly deaf in one ear and the other ear suffering an infection made for interesting progress.
6) What went well? - The game was entertaining with lots of decision making. Managed to include enough nuance to avoid being generic and bland, which can easily happen with so few troop types available. Also important to not resemble my ACW rules, another conflict with few troop types, therefore wherever possible they used deliberately different mechanisms to that game system.
7) What could have been improved? - A few gaps in rules where situations occurred that we had to quickly think of rules to cover. Bigger armies would have increased steadiness of the troops. I lost the game quite convincingly, but it was nice to play (I often umpire where I've produced the rules).

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Krupp Bashing
2) What armies were confronted? - French v Prussian mid-C19th Europe
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very comfortable indeed.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No, second
5) How many players were in the game? - Solo.
6) What went well? - It was a tough game which could have gone either way until the Krupp batteries started having some dice rolling luck. Consequently the game played out as one would expect in the FPW, but the French were only narrowly beaten and were able to withdraw their army under cover of darkness.
7) What could have been improved? - The rules are an adaptation of the Peter Pig Square Bashing WWI rules, and one needs to be familiar with these rules to make full use of Krupp Bashing. This appeared in the in-house Peter Pig e-magazine, The Mill issue 16, as a playsheet and army lists - Early Prussian, Late Prussian and German states, Imperial French, Republican French. Unfortunately the playsheet appeared with sections out of sequence and so I printed, then cut and paste to make a two sided sequential playsheet. If anyone is interested in gridded games the original rule ideas are in the Mill 16 and free to download. My playsheet layout can be found in the RFCM forum on the Peter Pig website in the Square Bashing child board Walter Schnaffs (the original adaptation for the FPW).

Hello All
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Duel of Aces.
2) What armies were confronted? – RFC vs German Air Service. British photo-reconnaissance mission of the 'Jellyfish Redoubt'. - 1 x RE8 & 3 x Sopwith Camels versus 3 x Albatros.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Not completely. Slight nuances between Regular and Green pilots.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? – No, a bit rusty.
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? – Diced for timed arrival on table. New PVC mat and re-made flight stands meant aircraft didn't topple over!
7) What could have been improved? – RFC Camels could have made the RV on time, and the RE8 pilot shouldn't have put in a tight left-hand turn to line up his second photo run. He lost all his energy went into a spin and at low level crashed into the ground. Game over.
Couple more pics.

6) What went well? - We achieved our objective with all three characters still alive (just).
7) What could have been improved? - Better dice rolling! :d We almost came very unstuck in the first three turns, too many failed activations, the character with the bow couldn't roll above 2 on a d20 and the magic-using character rolled a 1 and lost his magical power for the rest of the game!!!

6) What went well? - Everything my British did worked amazingly well
7) What could have been improved? - Everything David's Prussians attempted
Quite a massive win for the allies, all started brilliantly when the Prussian division commander unceremoniously fell off his horse and an exposed unit of Hussars were actually hit by a Congreve rocket launcher and legged it!
By the time massive Prussian cavalry reinforcements arrived, they were too late to swing the game as the loss of four Prussian foot units had cost the Germans dearly. The Allies held their ground, and watched as the Prussian corps commander arrived, took one look at the situation, deemed it unsalvageable and rode off to have lunch!

1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - AK-47 Republic (90s version) by Peter Pig
2) What armies were confronted? - Krapistani Warlord versus Al Kebab
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Very much, it's incredibly simple and easy to play
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? - We had an enjoyable time and it went down to the wire. My dice rolls were pretty abysmal, especially for reserves to come on the table
7) What could have been improved? Not much that I can think of.

Looks like a fun game, great looking miniatures, particularly the vehicles
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - IACTA ALEa EST!
2) What armies were confronted? - Scipionic Romans vs Seleucids
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? - I restrained the impulse to go for quick local advantages and cavalry scraps I was unlikely to win, rather concentrating on holding a steady line together. Lee had the placement of terrain, and blundered badly by cutting the available space with a river which restricted her cavalry advantage.
7) What could have been improved? We could have had a nude Keira Knightly and Johnny Depp serving drinks.
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - Aliens: Another Glorious Day In The Corps
2) What armies were confronted? - Colonial Marines vs Aliens
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Ish
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - In public, yes.
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? - Finding Newt on the first 'mission' blip, my collegue getting the rules straight off, a successful extraction, lot of laughs.
7) What could have been improved? Weizbowski not getting eaten, Ripley not going berserk early on, Frost not being able to open doors.
First play in our club, just two of us tonight, next time, eight people are joining in, it's going to be carnage!
1) What ruleset did you use in your last game? - IACTA ALEA EST!
2) What armies were confronted? - Ancient Indians vs Macedonians
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? - The Indians shot hopelessly; a few casualties here and there, but no serious weaknesses. An impetuous attack by the heavily outclassed Indian cavalry meant their left flank was even as the summer snow, when the sun is hot in summer.
7) What could have been improved? Lee's ambush was in the same location as my ambush, and better armed. The result was unfortunate. I had one of those series of endless 1 rolls which kept the Asians fighting even with a shaken army long after they should have been running for it.
Sons came round on Saturday for a Black Powder game of WSS. I forgot Sunjester was the one with the French - thought I had both sides, so we didn't play that. #1 said "That's why I gave you a week's notice, so you could borrow them"!
So we played BP's Grand-daddy, Warmaster.
#1 (assisted by #2) had Imperial Roman
I had Undead. Yes, we mixed Fantasy with Ancients rules. As it has been some years since last used there was a learning curve!
first 3 turns were really slow due to our rubbish command rolls, so #1 got #2 to do the dice throwing - #2 and Sj must have a game against each other to see what two sets of lucky dice look like.
The fact that the Romans moved, plus the fact Roman Legions are better than skeletons, and there were lots of bloody "Italians" basically didn't help. Add to that my Monsters were subject to my command rolls, so movement was fitful - I don't think the Skeleton Giant moved all game. Add to that the light cavalry more than held their own against my chariots and vultures it didn't go round for the forces of Chaos.

3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - After ten minutes of playing, it was pretty easy to run the basics
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes - David has been bagging us for months to give it a go. It was good.
5) How many players were in the game? - Four for two games of one Vs one.v
6) What went well? - The dinosaurs captured the Badgers flag game 1 pretty easily. Ravens were very tough. Rules good and clear, with nice special effects for each character.
7) What could have been improved? - A lot of dice rolls game one and a few rules as we were all new l.
A lot of fun, players aged 11, 20, 50 and 61 all had a good giggle. Already ordered a set for home
My last game of 2023 was the Battle of Sedan 1870 using a Franco-Prussian variant of Age of Eagles.
