Neither is the Anglo-Egyptian force that has just tried to rescue him. Ah, well, Lee feels good about winning. Pix anon.
Oh dear Alexander, not a good day for the Empire. Is the relief force on its way yet?
Yes in 10-15 years time under Kithcener - even Alexander can win with breechloading rifles machine guns and expolosive shells against spears and swords.
Not with the dice I got today. I didn't even get two of my three Gatlings set up before they were overrun.

Not surprising sine the British Army didnt use em, had Nordanfelts.
The sand of the desert is sodden red, —
Red with the wreck of a square that broke; —
The Gatling's jammed and the colonel dead,
And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
And England's far, and Honour a name,
But the voice of schoolboy rallies the ranks,
"Play up! play up! and play the game!"
:) :) :)
But thats poetry, you could never get Nordenfelt to scan. Remember it's
Cannon to the left of them
Cannon to the right of them
Into the valley of death rode the 600
actually 650 to 670.....
So . . . 19th century poetry is as accurate as 20th century hollywood?
Just as inaccurate but more contemporary so surely more reliable :D

Scans pretty well for me :)
Wikipedia says it should be a Gardner gun (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Newbolt#"Vitaï_Lampada") . . .
The thin red line suffered today then!
Those Imperial Cavalry have some splendid white horses, the Colonel must have deep pockets!

This feels like arguing if Hoover, Vacuum or Dyson is the right name for the machine that collects dirt from carpets.

We're wargamers, arguing over the "angels on pinheads" of military history is what we do :D

Fair point!
Using the term Gatling Gun in the poem still feels a lot better than current media calling pretty much every armoured military vehicle a tank.
Only because Mitrailleuse would not scan!

Of course it would. "The Gat - ling's" three syllables and Mi - traill - euse" three syllables.
"Milltrailleuse jammed and the colonel dead" would work perfectly well.
Wait!
We're wargamers .... are we allowed to argue over the finer points of poetry or do we need to swap over into a book club forum? :) :) :) :)

see you there Mike! :-B
Call it damage control. After so much Barkerese, many of us pay the closest attention to good language use.
Na we does na :'(
And then there's Ian, of course.
