Title: Basing ACW
Post by: Last Hussar on 14 February 2011, 08:31:45 PM
I am going to rebase my ACW to 30mm square bases.  I know I can get 4x4 (ECW pikemen) on a base of this size (and 3 x 2 WSS on 20mm). How many ACW figures would you suggest on this frontage to make it look right.

Tried Peter Pig ACW rules??

30 x 30 bases, number of figs immaterial, but fr 10mm I'd try between 4 and 6, 3 biggish 15s fill the base nicely.

PP ACW are just one of the rulesets I have - the reason I picked 30mm bases, which seem to fit most rulesets; F&F have 1 1/8 inch bases- which is 28.5mm (Why do US rules sets have fraction of an inch bases?), In Black Powder I can use 4 to a unit, Mr Lincolns War are 1".  Any one know what They Couldn't Hit an Elephant by the Lardies uses?

I'm just not sure how tight to base the figures - as tight as I can - so a front rank of 4, with 3-4 behind, or slightly looser at 3 and 2 or 3 behind?

I prefer a looser look for ACW. Where I would normally put 5 or 6 Napoleonics on a base I only put 3 or 4 ACW (that's 15mm figs on a 1" square  :-[) So I would probably go for 5-6 in your case.

Missed this bit first time of reading, believe they are 1" squares.
I have gone for 1" squares for maximum ruleset compliance too (although I have decided on 5 bases for BP standard just so I can get the command base in the centre)

Basically it's multiples of 3/8" per infantry figure. Started off as 4 on 3/4x1" with Empire IIRC. Actually works rather well for 15mm, much better than the 7.5mm per figure you used to get in Newbury rules etc.
