If only there was a word that describes the joy you feel at other's misfortune . . .

D**n, I wanted them to win the final on penalties.
I have never understood the attraction of football

SCH...urely there is... Epicaricacy (apparently).
No, I'd never heard of it either 😉
Cheers,

There's a German word I'm sure you know....
So England might get somewhere.....and Wales are gone as well ;D ;D

Neither have I. I have managed to avoid looking at any WC ganes, even by accident :)
Only played Rugby at school. Never found football that interesting. Lost what little appeal it had when players started to have no geographical connection with the club they played for.

Good for you - you must be so proud.
What I don't understand is why people who don't like a particular sport (or any sport) feel the need to tell everybody this in a thread about said sport. Why would we care that you don't like football? Would you like a badge, or a gold star or pat on the back for looking down your nose as those folk who do like said sport?
I'll take a badge please! :)
We don't look down on football fans. We respect them and hope they may be made well.

I must admit I did rather enjoy Call My Bluff (on one particular show I even knew 3 of the words - I recall one of them was Yeni-ceri or Janissary. Sadly, I never managed it again).
The concept of the show was great, the presenters were intelligent yet humorous and even the them tune brings back memories.
Cheers,
Geoff

After all it's not their fault being of low intelligence

I suspect some of you might remember the world cup petrol tokens (medals) that were about when I was a kid, that you collected (from your parents who were buying the petrol) and put into a collection board.
I think those old tokens would make wonderful medals for those of us (like myself) who have no interest in the game of football or the World Cup (although I will probably find that they are now collectors items worth 'fousands).
However, I don't decry football fans their pleasure in the game, I just wish that the media didn't stuff it down all of our throats, as if we are all equally interested/infatuated etc.
Some societies take football failure very seriously

I am. Yes please, where do I get this badge. I am always happy to pass a comment on a particular, even any, sport. I didn't intend to look down my nose at anybody, until I saw the Cheltenham Town FC badge ;D
The thing that turns me off football is the behaviour of so many players, in particular the lack of respect and aggressive behaviour towards match officials.
Beware being rude about Cheltenham Town.
They have the distinction of having been managed by a serving Intelligence Officer from GCHQ in the 1990s and he remains a Director (of Cheltenham Town, not GCHQ). :-X

You'd have loved the women's rugby match the BBC screened on the Red Button at the weekend.
The quality was . . . not great to be honest, but at the first penalty conceded by Bristol, one of the props gave some chat back to the referee - as she sees the top men's internationals do every week - who promptly marched Bristol back 10 metres.
Then she walked away shaking her head sarcastically, so the ref marched them back another 10 metres.
Rugby being reffed as I remember it from schooldays - loved it!
Currently in Marrakech, it was insane here yesterday :D :D
There are parts of the world where football can have an amazing positive effect.

I've watched quite a bit and the skills are often every bit as good as men's rugby and why shouldn't they be? Rhetorical question.
The only player allowed to talk to a referee is the team captain. They ought to import some of Rugby Union's discipline into Football but the will to reform the game doesn't seem to be there.

Definitely but as you say, they don't seem to want to. The harassing of the refs could be fixed in a matter of weeks if they just started dishing out red cards to anyone being abusive. Same for diving too, send it to VAR, if they've dived then they're off.
I remember some collectable coins (Green Shield stamps or petrol coupons?) from the early 1970's for the English First Division as it was then, if my memory serves me correctly.
As for the refs in football, I remember Nigel Owens (Welsh rugby ref) being asked how he would ref a football game. I believe he answered along the lines that there would be no players left after 10 minutes or so!

Don't do kickie-ball, but I do like an informative map.

Quite a map
It is quite instructive! Though I would have liked the colours to have a bit more of an obvious progression to them.
I saw a headline the other day around how there are so many good African players, but so few good African national teams. This map rather reinforces the later point.
It feels unlikely this World Cup will change the map much. As whilst the group stages through up a number of surprises. The first knock-out stage has gone very much to historic expectations.

And they're going to need a new colour for winning three, as both of the finalists are, yet again, previous winners :(.
